Metal go getters AWAKEN AGAIN give us the rundown on their formation, how they got their namesake, and what has been released so far. With an assortment of shows set for this spring and summer time! More music is expected with way more shows as well as being the best they can be as a band! See what else the band talked about with us below.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
In the beginning the band name didn't have any specific meaning . We were just looking for a band name that would sound cool and look good when typed. The first idea was "Wide Awake" but unfortunately there was already a band with that name. Today we think that being "awake again" is returning to the child-like state where everything is new and fascinating. It encapsulates the idea of awe and wonder that we think people are missing in life. Each moment is a unique miracle.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
When the band was founded, the idea was to play music like Enter Shikari which was one of our favorite bands at that time. Now we have broaden our influences but the spirit of Enter Shikari is definitely still there.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The band was formed by three longtime friends: Matti, Kasper, and Markus. Now only Matti is left from the original three.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based in Turku, Finland. In Finland Turku is one of the bigger cities but on a global scale it is a small place. Our music scene has been going up and down in the last ten years. When Awake Again was founded there were a lot of bars and clubs where you could play during weekends close to the city center and with that there were a lot of shows and a lot of bands. At some point many of those live music venues went under and the scene took a hit. At the moment the scene is doing pretty good. We have different sized venues and there are a lot of shows going on. Also, more international bands are visiting Turku nowadays so that's awesome. To mention some bands from Turku to follow we would say Avacia and Without Warning.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
We are inspired by a huge variety of music from pop to electronic music to metal. Also, other forms of art inspire us, especially movies.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
In our songs we explore the human condition based on our own personal experiences. We also cover some philosophical issues and the state of the world. In general, we are not a political band.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Yes, we write our own songs except from two cover songs. Usually someone from the band makes an instrumental demo and presents it to the rest of the band for commenting. After the song has a general structure in place we start to work more together. The process varies a little bit from song to song. Sometimes the initial demos are more ready and sometimes we start from scratch and start working on a brand-new song together.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We have released one full album, one EP and several singles. Our latest release is river which was released on 12th of December last year. We want to offer many kinds of songs to our listeners so you can expect fast and slow, moody and raw, beautiful and ugly, etc. but it will always sound like us.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yes, we are now working on a new four song EP which is set to be released this spring.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We have announced four shows for this spring, and some are still to be announced. We also have some shows in the summer and there are already talks about next fall. All shows are in Finland but we are eager to tour abroad some day!
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Make better music, do bigger shows, and really try to be the best version this band can be. Where that takes us is to be seen.
