Our CEO Kate Armstrong-Smith is having a wonderful time at SXSW Sydney this week! 💃 #screenwriting #sxswsydney
What a delight to be at SXSW in Sydney. Unlike Austin, which has gained enormity from 30 years of success, Sydney's inaugural event is wonderful for connecting and exploring. Firstly I got to join Kate Montague, @christinemwaturura and Jess Hamilton on the NAVIGATING ROMANTIC FANTASY WITH YOUR EARS panel, and we spoke about how people would rather listen to 🌶 #PillowTalkpod #Flirties or #privateaffairspod than read generative 'Mills and Boon stories' from our AI Love Generator experiment (storygenerator.othelia.co). And why? We all agreed that prioritising connection and how your stories make people feel are still key wayfinders for navigating content-making in this new digital age. This is very important to our work at Othelia Story Technologies to ensure that our narrative engines enhance the diverse cultures great writers hold in their stories. The SXSW icon Amy Webb also agrees. She had an optimistic view of the role of storytellers. Because we are moving from FEAR to FOMO around AI - and as the Writers Guild of America West has set a precedent that protects the writer over the machine - the creative renaissance we are pensive for is looking promising... Amy described how If AI continues the way it is going - we will get a very homogenised society. Recommendations will fall into safe rounds, and new and innovative content will not be surfaced, explored or made because LLMs weren't designed to create unique stories but are good at creating formulaic episodes. This is something we have seen as well in our #otheliastorylab. This is why tools that enhance human individuals' ability to iterate their storytelling over a machine's ability to generate a story resonates with writers. Also, I listened to the amiable and prolific Robyn Denholm, who reflected on how AI would change human productivity as we know it. Helping our workload will be necessary as the Baby Boomers moving out of the workforce is set to produce labour shortages on the horizon. Great first day, and more to come. #sxswsydney #sxswpanel

Here's the protections the WGA has set for the use of artificial intelligence in #screenwriting: - AI can’t write or rewrite literary material, and AI-generated material will not be considered source material under the MBA, meaning that AI-generated material can’t be used to undermine a writer’s credit or separated rights. - A writer can choose to use AI when performing writing services, if the company consents and provided that the writer follows applicable company policies, but the company can’t require the writer to use AI software (e.g., ChatGPT) when performing writing services. - The Company must disclose to the writer if any materials given to the writer have been generated by AI or incorporate AI-generated material. The WGA reserves the right to assert that exploitation of writers’ material to train AI is prohibited by MBA or other law. #AIregulation #screenwriters #filmproducer #culturetech For a full summary of the deal terms head to the WGA website:
