Unfortunately, genetic discrimination in the life insurance industry has prevented many people from accessing life changing proactive genetic testing and preventative healthcare. A very big day in Canberra for genomics. It’s been two decades since I started my journey to bring genomics to the Australian community – and what an honour to be in Canberra today, to host a Genomics Roundtable with leading genomics experts and advocacy, but also to witness the Hon Stephen Jones MP, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services announce a consultation on the use of genetic testing results by life insurance. This announcement today by the Federal Government is an extremely important step forward – and it was a great honour to be with everyone at the announcement including my amazing friends Jane Tiller (PhD) and Paul Lacaze who I celebrate today and every day - I am feeling very positive we are now on the path forward. It’s time to get behind this critical consultation and participate in securing a life insurance approach in line with other countries. This is a critical moment for people considering genetic testing now and for generations to come.
