We know that the economy is tightening and our SME's are struggling. But what can be done to support local traders and maintain #vibrant and #active local neighbourhoods? We did the research and the results are in.... Working in #placemaking for over 20 years, I thought I knew the answer: more time and attention in place-based programs to strengthen place identity. And while that's not wrong - it can be a long slow road, and there may actually be a more impactful way to safeguard our town centres from economic downturn. Flipping the problem on its head, we recently undertook intensive research with the people that are the primary driver of local vibrancy: the traders. From cafes to vets, and waxing salons to pharmacists, we interviewed over 300 small and medium local traders to ask them: "What do you need to make the most of your mainstreet location?" WHAT WE HEARD FROM TRADERS: 1. We want to stay in our retail location, but are unsure how to justify the overhead in uncertain times. 2. Our market is changing. We used to really know our customers, but so much has changed about local life it's hard to know if this is a phase or the new normal. 3. We are now data literate - and CRAVE more data. Online commerce platforms have boosted trader literacy in data to drive decisions. But have little/no access to quality data for their in-real-life locations. WHAT INFORMATION TRADERS NEED: 1. WHO can access me? While traders know the local area, they have limited understanding of the accessibility to inform advertising efforts, or recruitment campaigns. 2. WHY do people come here? Traders are often concerned about whether their location has the exposure they need, and whether it's 'worth staying' in the local area. 3. WHERE do visitors to this area come from? While they may know their local customers, they don't know if there are opportunities to capture visitors from adjacent businesses. More than 2,000 Australian place makers are using Neighbourlytics data to support their local traders. Create a free account now to test the tools for your location: https://bit.ly/3YC34av

Against the rise of e-commerce, how can brick-and-mortar retailers "earn the commute," by creating compelling reasons for shoppers to visit IRL? And how can shopping centre landlords help? In this insightful article, Neighbourlytics' Co-Founder & CEO Jessica Christiansen-Franks shares strategies for #shoppingcentres to support traders with actionable ideas for boosting foot traffic and community engagement such as: 1. Curate a diverse attraction mix. 2. Facilitate community engagement. 3. Promote local initiative.   💡 The big idea? I'm hugely excited about the upcoming opening of the newly elevated #Croydon train station. Not only because I put my kids into the childcare adjacent to it 6 weeks before it closed for 6+ months (not ideal..!), but because the bifurcated centre of Croydon will no longer have a train line cutting it in half. And so - of course - I can't help myself but look at what the #lifestyle #data shows about how this #LXRP has already changed Croydon across the last 6 months of construction: 1. NIGHT TIME ACTIVITY DIFFERENT Before the project started, Croydon's main dining precinct was one the busiest locations in the suburb in the evenings, and the station area was relatively quiet. However by May 2024, when the project had been underway 4 months, the dining precinct was notably quieter, while the workers around the station increased activity levels. Not >> Not really surprising, but it will be very interesting to watch how quickly the evening activity recovers 2. VISITORS TRAVELLED FURTHER: Across the last 6 months, the average travel distance of visitors to Croydon JUMPED to 10.6km, from 9.5km the same time last year. This increased visitor catchment is often a happy side effect of major infrastructure projects, as large numbers of workers travel to the location. >> An increase in average travel distance MAY also be a signal that there was a DECREASE in shorter local visits... so let's take a look 3. NEARBY VISITATION UNCHANGED: When looking at the top locations visited from surrounding suburbs, Croydon's share remained steady. With residents of Mooroolbark, Ringwood, and other neighbouring towns STILL favouring Croydon as they top place to go, despite the physical disruption >> The steady local visitation patterns are one of the most important indicators of the longer term local vibrancy CHECK OUT THE CROYDON LIFESTYLE DATA HERE: https://lnkd.in/g7xp8aXE Neighbourlytics

Understanding and designing for the diverse needs of all community members is not just a goal but a necessity for effective placemaking. Neighbourlytics’ advanced analytics helps place makers see how the community utilise and love local places, regardless of who they are. But traditional community engagement methods can leave key segments overlooked: 👥 Visitors: Neighbouring residents, workers, and frequent visitors play a crucial role in the local economy but are often underrepresented in feedback mechanisms. 👥 Residents Who Leave for Work: Changes in work patterns have shifted how people interact with their local areas, leading to lost local engagement and economic opportunities. 👥 Renters: Often disengaged from local government activities, many renters are unaware of how to participate in community events or decisions. 👥 Young People: Despite being opinionated, young people seldom participate in civic decisions due to lack of awareness, invitation, or perceived relevance. The Neighbourlytics platform is designed to capture the subtleties of urban life, offering a comprehensive view that guides more effective and empathetic urban planning. By examining local chatter at a neighbourhood level, it is possible to gain insight into how people love to socialise, where they love to spend time, and what activities they enjoy. It seems fairly obvious that the quality of your insights is directly related to the quality of your data (right??). Then why - so often - do place makers and planners try to understand 'place' while using irrelevant data boundaries? The day our Analytics Lead told me we could set our data boundaries based on 'where the activity is' or 'what you can walk to', was a gamechanger for me. As a recovering urban designer myself, I get exceptionally frustrated when the same old suburb boundaries are used, without a thought to the actual lived experience of a place. Suburbs - especially in our growth areas - are often large and totally agnostic to the hubs of activity. So why are we still doing it? These days, digital data has the flexibility to be defined by the user. So please stop using suburbs, or at the very least; make sure you quickly jump into a tool that gives you the flexibility for genuine hyperlocal exploration. Obviously I think the Neighbourlytics tools are a great place to start - instant reports for 9,300 hubs of activity across Australia (or just define your own if you want to).
