The 'Boys' Get Down to Business

Was just discussing "The Boys in the Band" with friends at dinner the other night and was surprised how ambivalent people remain about it. One friend still cringes at the self-loathing and "stereotypes" portrayed in the play, while a younger person still saw "any recognition" of gays and lesbians in the arts as a net positive. Given how I felt growing up a generation after, it's hard to believe that gay men in this era didn't overwhelmingly feel bad about themselves -- with zero role models and laws telling them they were criminal and sub-human -- so I never understood the harm in depicting a group of men who did. My friends and I all agreed that it might have been fun if writer Mart Crowley had updated the script, with the boys being envious of each others' Instagram followings and ability to hook up with hot men on Grindr. But I suppose that would require a complete retooling to factor in the other societal changes, so this thank-god-we’ve-progressed time capsule will do. "The Boys in the Band" on Broadway begins previews at the Booth Theatre at the end of this month.

Matt Bomer, Chelsea Clinton Honored at TAG Research Awards

I had a fun time last night at SAGE's annual Toy Party at Chelsea Piers (photos TK). But it seems the bolder-face names were at the TAG (Treatment Action Group) Research Awards held at the Eventi Hotel, where Matthew Bomer, Chelsea Clinton, Jim Eigo and Dr. Jack Whitescarver were honored. Co-chair Peter Staley reports that Chelsea Clinton "ignored her notes and spoke passionately at length on how to end this plague" ... when is SHE going to run for president?

Fun Couple: Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello

Via People:
The Carnegie Mellon School of Drama classmates reunited when Manganiello made a cameo on Bomer's show "White Collar" and again when the duo showed off their incredibly buff bods as male strippers in "Magic Mike." "Matt is one of the funniest people that I know, so the two of us together, we were just laughing our asses off the whole time," Manganiello told AfterElton about filming with his college friend.

Matt Bomer Covers HIV Plus

I finally watched "The Normal Heart" the other night after missing the HBO premiere by being at a dance in Brooklyn. (I know!) It was a classic case of expectations are everything -- having seen and loved the play, mine were exceedingly high -- only I ended up hearing so many negative things about it that I would up being pleasantly surprised when I finally tuned in. One thing that did take me aback -- and my friends Chris and Brian mentioned this too -- was that the HIV Plus coverman's beauty was borderline distracting in the beginning of the film. (Crisis? What crisis? Is he gonna get naked? How can this person really exist?) I guess it's not his fault(!), but then the more I thought about it the more I realized his casting was intentional, as a metaphor for the generation of men -- many very young and very beautiful -- that was wiped out as the world sat by and yawned. Ryan Murphy famously ruined "Running With Scissors" and "Eat, Pray, Love." But I would say he at least broke even with Larry Kramer's masterpiece. If nothing else, successfully making the movie will introduce the work -- if not the entire subject -- to a massive audience who never got to see the theatrical version.
