The Times used to be a serious newspaper

The horrible death of a child in an accident can be difficult. What's the correct way to react? How do treat the parents.

Here's a clue: you don't treat the parents the way The Times has just treated Nick Cave following the death of his son.

Nick Cave wrote a sequel to Gladiator

If you were going to come up with a sequel to a popular Hollywood hit movie, would you put in a call to Nick Cave?

No, we wouldn't, either. But Russell Crowe is not like us, and thought Cave would be the man for the job. Despite it being Nick Cave, and his character being dead.

Cave came up with a plot. Or possibly lost one. Hard to say:

"So, he goes down to purgatory and is sent down by the gods, who are dying in heaven because there's this one god, there's this Christ character, down on Earth who is gaining popularity and so the many gods are dying so they send Gladiator back to kill Christ and his followers.

I wanted to call it Christ Killer," Cave continues. "And in the end you find out that the main guy was his son, so he has to kill his son and he was tricked by the gods. He becomes this eternal warrior and it ends with this 20 minute war scene which follows all the wars in history, right up to Vietnam and all that sort of stuff and it was wild."
It's hard to believe this movie was never made, isn't it?

It's a pity they didn't give the new Star Wars trilogy to Nick.

Mick quits Seeds

Mick Harvey has finally fled the pod, as he leaves the Bad Seeds after quarter of a century:

"For a variety of personal and professional reasons I have chosen to discontinue my ongoing involvement with Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds.

"After 25 years I feel I am leaving the band as it experiences one of its many peaks; in very healthy condition, and with fantastic prospects for the future.

"I'm confident Nick will continue to be a creative force and that this is the right time to pass on my artistic and managerial role to what has become a tremendous group of people who can support him in his endeavours both musically and organizationally.

"It was a fantastic experience to finish my touring days in the band with the recent shows in Australia and the unique events that took place in conjunction with All Tomorrow's Parties, especially Mt. Buller, which was one of the many highlights of my involvement with the band throughout the years.

"I shall continue working on the Bad Seeds back catalogue reissues project over the coming year and look forward to the new opportunities I shall be able to accommodate as a result of my changed circumstances."

Cave parties

The shift of All Tomorrow's Parties from being a quirky idea into a sort of V festival with a fanzine stand continues, as it rolls out an Australian leg. It's being curated by Nick Cave; the line-up of bands is impressive. But it all feels like it's turning into a template.

PJ Harvey weekend: Henry Lee

Back now to Channel 4's short-lived minimalist show The White Room, and a 'surprise' appearance by Polly to help out Nick Cave with Henry Lee:

Q loves Coldplay - true

Tucked into a piece about Bauer in yesterday's MediaGuardian was a passing reference to some sort of "overhaul" planned for Q.

Not clear if this is going to involve a sudden change of musical direction, but if it is, it can't come a moment too soon, to judge by the nominations for the Q Music Awards ("sponsored by some sort of drink"):

BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST –
Duffy
Adele
Santogold
Bon Iver
Gabriella Cilmi

Much as we like Bon Iver, in what way are they considered to have broken through? Broken through what? In fact, why don't they just call this the best new act?

Oh... hang on...
BEST NEW ACT -
Fleet Foxes
Glasvegas
The Ting Tings
The Last Shadow Puppets
Vampire Weekend

Haven't the Ting Tings broken through more solidly than any of the breakthrough acts? Can you break and be new at the same time?
BEST TRACK -
Keane – Spiralling
Duffy – Mercy
Coldplay - Violet Hill
Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl
The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name

Katy Perry? Since, presumably, that's an attempt to prove that they're not all stuffy and old. Because it's the sort of track you'd choose if you were a bit stuffy trying to prove you weren't.
BEST VIDEO -
Hot Chip - Ready To The Floor
Coldplay - Violet Hill
The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name
Vampire Weekend - A-Punk
Goldfrapp - Happiness

I imagine this has something to do with the Q TV playlist.
BEST LIVE ACT -
Kaiser Chiefs
Kings Of Leon
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds
The Verve
Rage Against The Machine

Rage Against The Machine? Rage Against The Machine?
BEST ALBUM (sponsored by Nixon) -
Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death; And All His Friends
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Nick Cave And The Band Seeds - Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!!

The couple of solid choices here are fatally undermined when you remember they're being measured against Coldplay's album.
BEST ACT IN THE WORLD TODAY (Sponsored by Russian Standard Vodka) –
Coldplay
Oasis
Muse
Metallica
Kings Of Leon

Kings Of Leon's presence on this list is going to form the basis for a remake of Cool Runnings.

Nick Cave hears voices

As a mucking-around way to generate some viral interest in his new album, Nick Cave is doing this sort of thing:

It's one part Scooby Doo to two parts that bloke who used to pop up on Paul Daniels with an act which involved yelling "Spirits, are you there?"

"He was dead and the dead must be buried. Everyone knows that"

Nick Cave's And The Ass Saw The Angel is getting a luxury reprint in a collector's edition - we suspect it's probably roughly a 20th anniversay edition. Give or take.

Peaches Geldof's constant world of surprises

Rav Singh's creaking News of the World column has discovered some pictures of Peaches Geldof getting a tattoo.

Lyrics from Nick Cave's Into My Arms tattooed, erm, across her lower back. Rather than her arms, which would have at least made some sort of sense.

So, is Peaches a big Cave fan?

Um... no:

I hear her fella FRED LES is a big fan of the singer.

Some people get their current partners' name etched on their ankle, and often live to regret it. Well done, Peaches, for going one step even more half-stupid.

Oh, and where did Rav ("Britain's Hottest Showbiz Reporter") get this scoop?

He read it in that magazine the send to Sky subscribers to put straight into recycling every month. That's journalism, that is.

Death, be not proud

News of a Suicide date in London is always to be welcomed, so try not to let the fact it's a support slot for Nick Cave's Tin Machine sideshow Grinderman disappoint too much. 20th June at the Forum, although it's already sold out, apparently. Which is quite disappointing.

Seeds of an idea

We're sure it brings him no pleasure whatsoever - what with life being so grim, and everything - but Nick Cave is preparing a new Bad Seeds album, despite currently touting his Grinderman record:

"Now I'm writing the new Bad Seeds one. We're going to record it either June or July."

Presumably to benefit from the opportunity to run through fields of wild flowers with the sun in his hair between recordings.
