Vanyaland is dead / Vanyaland is not dead

Oh lordy, I think I found myself a brand new lover.

When I started Vanyland several years ago, it was a reaction to the over-edit and re-write hack jobs I was suffering from at the Herald. I created this blog as a means for me to break out of dinosaur print restrictions and write about what I wanted, what I thought Boston needed to know about and whatever other bullshit romancing me at the moment. It was great therapy.

With the new gig as Music Editor of the Boston Phoenix, I don't feel there is a need to distinguish this blog from my day job. In reality, aside from videos like the ones below, any "news" or show promo plugs I post here should be going to the alt-weekly. They, after all, pay the bills. But more importantly, they have my target demo, and allow me the freedom to spit how I spit.

Vanyaland will not die; just slow down considerably. I'll still hype the pill news and Endless Wave (the lone member of the streamlined Vanya MMC) and other random nonsense, but it's time to shift focus to the Phoenix. It's quite a gig, and demands my full attention.

Thanks to all who read this over the years. As Bertie says so timelessly, here's looking at you, kid.

NME: Suede to reunite for Teen Cancer Trust gig

Well, this is some fun Friday news: The NME is reporting Suede, era 1996+, will reunite for a one-off gig March 24 (Note: I had an incorrect date previously) at the London Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust concert.

It's Richard Oakes on guitar, not Bernard Butler, who is busy winning Grammys and producing Lissy Trullie, but I'm okay with that. While my dream of seeing the band in 1993 form will never materialize -- Brett neither has the hair, stature or grandmother's wardrobe any more -- this is still good enough and I'm already on Orbitz trying to get to London next month.

I've seen Suede three times -- twice on the 1997 Coming Up tour and in 2000 at the Iceland Airwaves festival, where they premiered Head Music. Both were religious experiences. Stay tuned...

Lady Gaga at the Wang in December

These are truly the best of times... and I don't care if I act like a 13 year old girl involving anything Gaga. I pay my own bills I do what I want!

Repost from Hotline: Kanye West can't hold Lady Gaga down! The unstoppable pop princess has announced a headlining tour of her own, bringing along Kud Cudi for 22 North American dates that brings Gaga Superstar to the Wang Center for two dates Dec. 1 and 2. Yes, nevermind those hermaphrodite rumors -- it's Lady Gaga at the Wang, ladies and gentlemen.

The news is super sweet for Gaga fans, as the tour with West didn't include a Boston stop. The closest date was a Dec. 16 show at the DCU Center in Worcester, as well as a show in Hartford around Christmastime. Now not only do we not have to deal the guilt of with paying for Kanye West tickets, but travel just got a whole lot easier. Just dance, says Hotline!

Here's word from Interscope Records: International pop superstar Lady Gaga today announced plans for her next North American tour, entitled "The Monster Ball." The tour will begin on Nov. 27 in Montreal, and will wind up on Jan. 21, 2010 in Gaga's hometown, New York City. Kid Cudi will be the supporting act for the entire tour.

Says Lady Gaga, "The Haus of Gaga had been designing 'The Monster Ball' for premiere in 2010 at the O2 Arena in London, but due to diligent work and preparation, 'The Monster Ball' will begin on Nov. 27 in Montreal. 'The Monster Ball' is a multimedia artistic experience in the style of the first-ever 'pop electro opera.'"

Lady Gaga will release a re-package of her breakthrough album, The Fame, called The Fame Monster, earlier that week, on Nov. 23. The re-package will include eight brand new songs, including the club-banging first single "Bad Romance." Continues Lady Gaga, "A message to all my little monsters: The Fame Monster will come out four days before the first live show. You have exactly 96 hours to learn all of the lyrics so you can sing along. Dress accordingly."

The dates for "The Monster Ball" are:
Nov. 27 – Montreal, Quebec, Canada – The Bell Center
Nov. 28 – Toronto, Ontario, Canada – Air Canada Center
Nov. 29 – Ottawa, Ontario, Canada – Scotiabank Place

LIGHTS' major label debut in October

Ahhhhhh, best news in forever: Toronto-based electro-pop queen-inwaiting Lights, who I've already expressed a very ridiculous amount of love for, will release her Warner Bros debut album "The Listening" on Oct. 6.

Already one of the most beautiful girls to ever walk this planet, the musical props are steadily building (told you so): 16 million plays on MySpace, a 2009 Juno (Canadian Grammy, basically) for "New Artist of the Year," a cult-like online presence, impressive slots on the Warped Tour and airtime on Old Navy commercials and "The Hills." I'm always a sucker for electronic girl-pop, but this just puts me over the edge.

I want to type smiley-face emoticons and pair up <'s with 3's when I listen to this. The video below, for "Saviour" has pulled 625,000+ views since arriving on MySpace Aug. 8. She's opening for Keane across Canada this fall, with some US dates to be added soon.

Her show at the Middle East upstairs was near religious experience, and despite being 30 years old I bought a fucking t-shirt, and got her to sign my just-purchased EP as I acted like the most uncool dude ever at the merch table. Yes, I have issues. I might have called her the next Sara Bareillis or something to that effect in the Herald, but it's just so much better than everything else out there like that. As she describes it, her music is "soft, but not pussy-soft, you know?" Sadly, yes, darling miss Valerie Poxleitner, I do.

News of the Week: Sarah Silverman is single

Oh sweet Mary, Sarah Silverman is single. What a way to start the day.

From IMDB.com: America's first couple of comedy, Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman, have ended their five year romance.

A representative for late night U.S. TV host Kimmel and the comedienne has confirmed the split, insisting it was mutual. Just five months ago the pair hit the headlines when their star-studded parody sketches for Kimmel's show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, became an Internet sensation.

Silverman's I'm F**king Matt Damon tune and video was followed by Kimmel's I'm F**king Ben Affleck. The videos featured a host of A-list stars including Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford, Robin Williams and Cameron Diaz.
