WFT?! (What's For Tea?!): Afghani Style Kebabs

Hello Fellow Nom Seekers!

I am  currently going through an Afghani food jag.  Can't get enough of kebabs and Afghani naan bread.  So I have decided to try my hand at making a few kebabs.  The Afghani garlic naan I bought from the local supermarket and heated them up in the oven.  I will one day give myself the challenge of making my own naan but one step at a time...

The chicken kebab recipe is something I free-styled after watching an Afghani cooking episode on Food Safari.

Ingredients for chicken kebabs, makes enough for 4:

  • 6 chicken thigh fillets cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup of natural yoghurt
  • 4 onions (2 red and 2 white)
  • salt and pepper
  • a sprinkling of paprika
  • 3 garlic cloves
Method:
  • I used bamboo skewers so I soaked these whilst I prepared the rest of the ingredients.
  • Using a food processor, chop the onions and garlic.  Then place these in a tea towel and squeeze the bejeezus out of it.  Let the juice drip over your chicken chunks.

  •  Salt and pepper your chicken.  Then add a sprinkling of paprika and the yoghurt.  It is best to leave this to marinate for at least 30 minutes in the fridge.  Better if over night.

  •  After marinating, shake off the excess yoghurt and skewer your meat.
  • If you have a bbq or a charcoal brazier - fantastic - cook the skewers on that.  I didn't so I did these on the stove top.  I placed a bit of oil in a non stick pan before layering out the skewers.  Cook on medium to high heat until cooked through.
  • Eat up.

Until next time,

Afghan Masala Persian Cuisine

Hello Fellow Nom Seekers!

The Afghan Masala Persian Cuisine covers a lot of geographical ground.  It offers Afghani and Indian food and the owner of the place is Persian so they do Irani style cuisine as well.

The restaurant part is connected to the bakery.  When you first walk in, you will be faced with an array of Persian and Indian sweets.  My seven year old, Bubbachuck got very excited by the display and took heaps of pictures for us with my iphone.  Here they are a few for you:

Unfortunately, whilst they appeared delectable, they did not taste good at all.  We bought a pink cookie and all it tasted of was shortening and flour.  It wasn't even sweet.  In the words of Bubbachuck, "There's no taste." We threw it away.

The reason we were here was to purchase a heaping pile of kebabs and Afghan bread to feed a horde of  hungry boys at a gardening working bee.  I purchased the kebabs to go and a stack of fresh Afghan bread.  The kebabs came with a light sprinkling of green salad.  Since there were no plates or cutlery at the gardening bee, we used the large sheet of Afghan bread as plates and ate our bits of meat and salad off it.

Chicken kebab - very very tasty

Lamb kebab - even tastier in my humble opinion

Using a big slab of Afghan bread as a plate - versatile.
Whilst the sweets were disgusting, the kebabs and Afghan bread was awesome.  The meat was grilled over charcoal and the marinade was garlicky and oniony good.  The bread was fresh and it did not matter that we had not facilities to warm it up before we ate it, it tasted good anyway.

Afghan Tasty

Greetings Fellow Nom Seekers!

The family went for a weekend drive and we ended up in Dandenong, an area we usually don't get the chance to explore.  After parking the car, we realised we were in food heaven and had many choices that were not going to break the bank.  We settled for Afghan Tasty.

As this our first Afghani food experience, we were not sure what to expect.  The place is very basic but clean.  We proceeded to the counter and ordered a Chicken Kebab and Burani Bonjon (cooked eggplant served with yoghurt.  The Chicken Kebab came with Afghan bread and salad.

Both dishes were on the table within minutes.  The meal was very tasty - the salad fresh and the Afghan bread to die for.  Glutt commented that she would have been happy eating the bread alone.  Our fussy Bubbachuck loved the kebabs and the bread.

The two dishes did not look like much but were enough to feed two adults and one very hungry child.
