Psalm 84:3 “Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest in which she puts her young, near your altar, O LORD of hosts, my king and my God.”
Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they?”
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the birds! You know how much I enjoy watching them each morning. You have sent me so many beautiful ones over the years. I’ve already seen the red cardinal and the yellow goldfinch this morning. Their beautiful feathers fill my senses and I smile. Even the less colorful birds like the titmice and the chickadees are so cute and perky in their duller colors. Then there are the sparrows. We don’t always appreciate the sparrows and disparage them for their aggressive behavior at the feeder and around our houses and buildings. But “even the sparrow has found a home”….they are quite good at finding homes in any nook and cranny they can squeeze a bit of space! Just like people, some are less lovely, some less “desirable” due to their personalities and habits. There are people who are the scroungers of the world, just like the sparrows…..always struggling for what they can grab, never quite in tune with the rest of society, barely making a living but tenacious and aggressive and persistent. They have a right to survive, too. In your kingdom, sparrows, grackles and starlings are just as welcome as goldfinches, cardinals and blue jays. They all have a “home” near your altar. Grace has been provided for each one in equal measure. No one who wants a home with you is turned away. You are an inclusive God not an exclusive one. We should learn from that! We must love and welcome all to come to your kingdom. That is what Jesus did! He is our example. He is our Savior! He bought all of us and invited us into your mansion of many rooms. You are King of sparrows. You are King of the poor, the lame, the blind, the imprisoned! All! My King, my God! Amen.
