"In the Coop" is DONE!

Finally, a sunny day and my husband was home to hold the quilt for the photoshoot!  I spent Sunday hand sewing the binding and managed to get it all done.  Yesterday was too cold and rainy/snowy to take pictures outside.

Cathy at Eagles' Wings Quilts did a lovely job with the custom quilting.  There is wood grain quilting on the coop looks great!  The chickens have feathers and the wings have a paisley quilting pattern.  There are eggs in the chicken wire border.

Sorry about the shadows from my Eastern Redbud tree in the pictures.

My chickens are happy to be out in the sunshine!!!

I like the pebbles in the yellow backgrounds too.

It is so nice to have a finished quilt to show to all of you.  I will be taking my quilt to the Elgin Piecemakers meeting later this week for show and tell.  This fall, the London Friendship Quilters Guild will be holding their quilt show and this quilt will make an appearance there too.

The Big Reveal: RRCB is done!

I finally finished hand sewing the binding last night before I went to bed.  I LOVE THIS QUILT!  I love the colours!

I love the fabrics!  I love how I can play "I Spy" with the neutral strings! (Can you find a violin?)

I love the pieced border too.

And, I love the quilting!  Karen C in Dorchester, Ontario did a beautiful job!  Her quilting really compliments the piecing. She used Antique Red thread and it really pops!

Did I tell you I love this quilt????

I can't wait to start another scrappy quilt with lots of pieces...but I have a few other projects to finish first.

Thanks, Bonnie Hunter, for a great pattern!

Liberated Wedding Rings from the Edge

I picked up my quilt from the longarmer's on Monday and put the binding on it. Today, I sewed the sleeve onto the back while I was at Jacqui's so it is all ready for the quilt show. Karen C did a great job on the quilting--lots of feathers in the wide border and in the blocks. Here are some close ups of the quilting. You can see the design she quilted in the blue border in this picture as well as the feathers in each block.
This picture shows the feathers in the outer border

The backing material is called "Crazy for Dots and Stripes"--very appropriate for my quilt, I think! I wanted a random polka dot fabric for the back. There are lots of fabrics with rows of dots--it was harder to find random dots. I think the ladies in the quilt stores thought I was nuts!
The red binding is perfect!

And, here is the whole quilt--all done!
If you want to see my quilt in person, it will be on display at the "Harvest of Quilts" quilt show at Rowntree United Church on Oct 1st (10 am to 8 pm) and 2nd (10 to 5pm). There are many talented quilters in our guild and there will be lots of wonderful quilts to see. There is also the toonie table-raffle table with donated items to raise money for our charity quilt projects, a tea room and several vendors. The quiltaholics among you might want to make a quilty weekend of it and also visit the nearby quilt show in Ingersol, hosted by the Oxford Quilt Guild. Their show is Sept 30 to Oct 2nd.

A Trip to the Longarm Quilter's!

I spent my sewing time on the weekend adding borders to my Grateful Heart sampler. Last night and today after work, I finished piecing the backing. My label is pieced right into the backing and is made from one of the butterfly pictures from the panel that came with the Northern Solitudes fat quarter bundle that I used to make this quilt. I must say that I am relieved to have this quilt done and off to the longarm quilter's! Putting borders on and making the backing are my most un-favourite parts of making a quilt!

Here is a close up of the borders that I added to my quilt. There are 156 flying geese in this quilt and they inspired the name of the quilt "Fly Away Home". My SIL came up with the name after looking at some pictures of the quilt blocks on my blog while we chatted on the phone together. Some of the blocks, for example, the house block, the rail fence, the log cabin, etc., reminded her of HOME. The flying geese traveling around the outside of the quilt, reminded her of the movie "Fly Away Home" (This is an excellent movie that you should rent and watch if you have not seen it already!) so the name stuck! My SIL is not a quilter, but is a very artistic person so I value her opinions on my quilting endeavours. She calls me a "quiltaholic"--I told her she is an "enabler"--after all, she did buy me the Elvis fabric shown in a previous post as a gift from her recent vacation...

My friend, Karen, and I took the quilt to the longarm quilter's tonight. Here it is, all laid out as we discussed how to quilt it. I will post a picture of the whole quilt when it is all done. Her Gammil quilting machine is in the background. As soon as she is finished the quilt she is doing now, my quilt will go on the machine. I should have it back within a week!!!

Back from the Longarmers...

Earlier this week, I received the phone call I had been waiting for!!!! My quilts that had been at the long arm quilters were done and I could go and pick them up!!! Here are a few sneak peaks at the quilting on some of them. All are custom quilted with designs that the quilting lady and I came up with.

The first one has a beautiful big feather in the middle,

and lovely designs in the borders too. This yellow and blue quilt has an overall pattern in the center section and neat little swirls in the narrow blue border.
This little table topper was made from the leftover triangles from the star quilt above. It too has feathers on it.
The last one has large flowers and leaves, as well as baskets of smaller flowers.
Binding these quilts and getting labels on them is my next sewing goal, after the birthday pj's are made. Speaking of which, I need to go and sew so the pj's are ready for the birthday party this weekend.

Bye for now!
