Sometimes Even Ships Have Signs

Astoria, Oregon ~ January 27, 2012

The NYK Line's Neptune Leader passes downtown Astoria, giving people like me with a moderate zoom lens a good view of the pilot boat in action.

Today I'm taking part in Signs, Signs. Hop on over!

Footbridge on the Cherwell

Oxford, England ~ February 19, 2010

The Cherwell joins the River Thames a few yards from here, but you would hardly recognize London's thoroughfare as it meanders small and lazy like the Cherwell past the playing fields of Oxford's Magdalen College.

Sacramento: Breakfast on the Water

Sacramento, California ~ April 6, 2008

We had brunch in the building with wrap-around windows just in front of the bridge pier. It was tasty, healthy food, good company, and an interesting view. A nice, lazy morning.

Flood Waters near Tucson

Flooding in Sabino Canyon near Tucson - The Beginning of our HikeSabino Canyon, Arizona ~ December 30, 2004

We got our feet wet, although many who had taken the bus (tram? open bus?) hoping to reach the trailhead did not venture past the watery roadblock. Although it had rained hard the night before, it turned out to be a beautiful day with perfect weather for our hike in Sabino Canyon, north of Tucson.

Almost Lost

Paris Scene on the Seine Paris ~ May 6, 2004

This is among the photos I almost lost when my luggage was scanned. I hadn't learned in 2004 that the scanners are stronger than the ones that scan your carry-on things. When I got home, some of the files (scattered randomly across several disks) looked pretty strange and I couldn't open them. After I calmed down, I searched online for a recovery service, and I found one that turned out to be exellent, although I no longer remember the name. I sent the two or three damaged SD cards off to the media recovery guy, and it was well worth it. I feel very lucky to have the pictures back. Since then, I've remembered to carry the SD cards with me!

I imagine this is one of the most photographed scenes in Paris. Taken from Pont Neuf, it shows the point of the Ile de la Cite, the Pont des Arts, the dome of the Institut de France, and the Eiffel Tower. For me it's unusual among my photos of Paris because the sun was shining.

Apparition

Sacramento, California ~ April 6, 2008

It's not a movie set, and it's not Egypt. I took this photo from a delightful outdoor restaurant on the Sacramento River. I believe the building holds offices - possibly government offices, but I'm not sure about that part.

Smith Rock State Park

Smith Rock, Oregon Near Terrebonne, Oregon ~ September 1, 2007

If you're so inclined, you can go onto Google Earth and look up Terrebonne. The numerous blue dots nearby are pictures of Smith Rock. There's a trail up and back (long way or short, your choice) for hikers, but this is also a place climbers come from all over the world. It seems they practice here for bigger challenges, but Smith Rock is stunning in its own right. (I take the trail - and a camera.) The surrounding farmland doesn't prepare you for this anomalous outcropping and it's perfectly scenic Crooked River setting.
