Imposing

Port Townsend, Washington ~ September 21, 2003
Jefferson County Courthouse

Looking more like something designed by Louis Sullivan for construction in Chicago, this imposing Romanesque building cannot help but catch one's attention as they pass by. When I looked it up online, I found Stan Rule's blog, which in turn links to a PDF file about the building's history. (Gotta love the Web, yes?) You might also enjoy Port Townsend Daily Photo.

Willaby Creek

Olympic Peninsula, Washington ~ January 19, 2003
Olympic National Forest

This is the only photo I have of this stretch of the hike. I was taking many fewer photos then, partly because I didn't want to use up my one or two small memory cards. I think it also took some time to get over the old notions of "film" being expensive and my needing to ration the photos. How times change. Anyway, this is the creek we crossed on a hike from the Lake Quinault Uodge to a really gigantic old-growth tree. The only way was to shinny across a very slick slanted log or get completely wet. I remember Lee telling me to think like a monkey, because they don't fall. Strange, but it worked.

Buzz Up, Catch Down

Staircase with Words and Phrases Los Angeles ~ 2003
From the series "Los Angeles Urban Art 2003"
by Francisca

Staircase at Los Angeles Transit Stop I have no idea where the words and phrases come from in this uniquely thought-provoking staircase. Like a collage, the random juxtapositions cause an interesting cascade of images to form. Is the building at the top a psych center? Holistic healing and therapists' offices? Day Trading Central? Maybe Francisca can help us out here. I love the shadow in the first photo.

Later: Francisca helped answer the question. She wrote, "Sheryl, this is what the architects said about the words: 'Walking up the station's stairs, passengers will discover words and phrases which have entered our 1990's vocabulary; will they remain in our lexicon or become obsolete?' Source: http://www.metro.net/about/art/locations/el-segundo-sta/#1" Thanks, Francisca!

Fish and Shell Mosaic in the Women's Bathroom

Fish mosaic at a convention center, Portland, Oregon Portland, Oregon ~ c. 2003

I found this mosaic in a restroom at one of the Portland convention centers. I think it was the Rose Garden, but I'm no longer sure about that. We had attended a gift show before I had any clue about finding my way around Portland. I only remember I was happy to see that someone had thought of decorating the restroom with animals.

An Egret at Maryhill

Maryhill, Washington ~ October 5, 2003

Down the slope is the Columbia River. On the other side are miles and miles of arid, rocky terrain. Yet inside the Maryhill Museum of Art you'll find world-class exhibits of European origin. Sam Hill wanted his wife to forget about her life in Minneapolis and be content with him here in the West. It didn't work out, but he left an unusually interesting legacy and many miles of good roads. And this bronze egret.

Scarlet Kingsnake on a US Postage Stamp

Scarlet kingsnake on a US Postage Stamp Scarlet Kingsnake (Lampropeltis elapsoides)
South-eastern United States
U.S. Postage Stamp ~ 2003

Postage stamps are often such wonderful pieces of mini art. I've saved them for years. I don't sort and organize them, and I know nothing about stamp collecting. I always grab the cool animal stamps I see, and a few other other images, too. I use them in collages or I just keep them in a jar. Now I have another use for them . . . on this blog.
