FO Friday 64

Happy Friday everyone! I'm going to keep this short, as I have so much to do between now and Saturday afternoon. I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. I will be scheduling WIPW and FO Friday posts while I'll be gone, but won't be able to comment on your posts, or share any of my pictures. Please still post your links for all to read/view!

I finished my second monster in a week, which is great because it was the one project I didn't want to take on the ship with me, due to the stuffing, eyes, assembly. I made Kat the Kitchen Monster by Rebecca Danger for my 2 1/2 year old niece, Emma. She actually picked that one as her favorite from the book back when I first bought it, and her favorite color is baby blue, so I hope she loves her.

As I mentioned, I was afraid of the hips being too wide, but it turned out okay I think. I ended up kitchner stitching her head, instead of 3 needle bind off, because I have no clue how you could turn her inside out, as it is knit in one closed piece, but that's what the pattern called for. I figured kitchner basically does the same thing, so no biggie. Her head just isn't as round as it could be. I'm not crazy with the placement of her mouth in the end, I wish I had put it a little lower and I'm not sold on the ribbon, but it's what I have around. For now, I'll call her done, as she has to be ready to be loved on Christmas Eve.

Unfortunately I finished her last night, so I wasn't able to get a cute/fancy picture of her, so this one will have to do.

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 70

Hi everyone. I hope you're having a great week. I'm not sure I've said something yet, but I will be on vacation from Dec 10 (this Saturday) to Dec 24th. In that time, I'll still be posting WIPW and FO Fridays, but they will be scheduled as of this week, with no updates, just the Mr Linky so everyone can participate. I also want to wish everyone a happy holidays, regardless of what you celebrate!

Also, a Candy Skein note, if you'd like to order a custom skein, please do so by the end of today, so that I can dye it and get it mailed before I leave. If you'd like yarn sent to you for the holidays, I'll be mailing out orders that are purchased until Friday afternoon. After that, all orders placed between Dec 10-24 will be mailed on December 26th. Sorry for the inconvenience!!

Okay, now that is done, let's check out how behind I am on my Christmas knitting! Let's just say, I'm glad I'll have a lot of time to just sit back and knit for the next two weeks!

Since I'll have a lot of time to knit on vacation (did I mention we're going on a cruise to Hawaii!? ALLOOOHHAAA), I hope to get it all finished by the time we get back. I have two more pairs of socks to make, and I hope to finish the monster I'm making right now this week.

That leads me to a pic of the monster! I'm making Kat the Kitchen Monster from Rebecca Danger for my younger niece. She's 2 1/2 and her favorite color is baby blue and this was her favorite monster from the book. Unfortunately, I messed up and increased too much in the hip/leg area, but decided to just go with it. It looks a little weird, but I hope it looks normal, or okay once I stuff it. We'll see. As I said, I hope to finish this for FO Friday, or at least before I leave. Again, I'm using Plymouth Superwash Merino DK.

I started on a new pair of socks. I'm using the Hedgerow sock pattern and Candy Skein Yummy fingering in Robin Egg Malt Ball. Now much to say with this so far, as I just started, and am focused on the monster!

That's it for me right now. See you all Friday!

FO Friday 63

Kind of off topic to start, but I just realized I posted the Candy Skein logo instead of the FO Friday logo last week! That's what I get for trying to cram in the post before the Thanksgiving holiday!

Anyway, to FO Friday. As you can see, no picture, BUT, I finished KNITTING the monster!! WOOT! I had a little issue tonight, as I was rushing to finish knitting the last piece...I snapped my needle in half. Now, with a small needle, that wouldn't be too odd, as last week I broke one of my US size 2 needles, but this was a size 6 needle! Oy. So, after I pouted for awhile, I realized I had another size 6 that I could swap out to finish. My Rhombi sweater is size 6 needles, so luckily, with the needles being interchangeable, I was able to snake it to finish.

Unfortunately, the little setback made it so I didn't have time to stuff and assemble. I promise to get it up today ASAP! So please come back and check out Bea!

Edit: HERE SHE IS!!!!

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 69

Happy Wednesday! I hope everyone had a great weekend, and a great Black Friday for those in the US. We took it easy on the weekend, just hanging out with my parents and running errands in LA. We did get a chance to see The Muppets (we're HUGE Muppets/Jim Henson fans), which we absolutely LOVED. I want to see it again!!! We also had a chance to visit Unwind, one of my favorite yarn stores, and I got three skeins of Sweet Georgia worsted weight in Ox blood colorway to make the Abalone. I can't wait to make it! The yarn has a great twist and is a gorgeous deep red.

As far as WIPW, I'm currently working on one thing, the Rebecca Danger monster, Bea, for my niece. It's a Christmas gift, so I'm trying to plow through it, marking it off my list, as I still have a few gifts to get through. I have the body knit and am working on the arms right now. I'm using Plymouth Superwash DK, and I really like the stitch definition with it, except if you catch a little area of it, it seems to snag kind of easy, due to the really pronounced stitches. Hopefully it holds up as a toy. I really like how soft and squishy it is though. I hope to have this done at some point this week, as I have another monster and two more socks to finish. Yikes! Time is ticking by.

That's it for me today. How is your holiday knitting going?

For those that are new to WIPW, to share your WIPW post with us, just fill out the Mr. Linky below. Despite it saying you must comment, don't feel as if you do. That is something Mr. Linky automatically adds. I just ask you to check out a few of the links posted to see what everyone else is working on and comment there if you can. Work-in-Progress Wednesday 68

Hi everyone! Happy Wednesday and also Happy (day before) Thanksgiving to all of my US readers!!! We're heading to LA to spent the holiday with my family, and I can't wait. We haven't been there since September and we miss LA and my family desperately. It should be great, and I hope to visit a few yarn stores, including one of my all times favorites, Unwind in Burbank.

Just a quick note before I start with my WIPW portion of the post. For those interested, I will be posting Candy Skein Assortments, which are sets of mini skeins today on my site. I will have another post later today when they're for sale. :)

Okay, now to WIPW!

I don't have too much to share today, as I FINALLY finished the socks I've been slaving over. More from that on Friday (which weirdly I'll be writing the post today and scheduling it, so I apologize in advance if the scheduling doesn't work properly. Sometimes it doesn't put the post up when it should, so keep your fingers crossed).

What I did start was another Christmas present (I can't wait until it's over so I can work on something for myself! LOL). I'm making another Rebecca Danger monster, Bea the Basement monster, for one of my nieces. Her favorite colors are pink and light green, so despite these not being colors I'd pick, I think it will look cute and she'll (hopefully) love it! I'm using Plymouth Superwash DK, and love it so far. It's SOO soft and squishy, though a little splitty I must say.

That's it for me sadly! I'm still working on my Rhombi sweater, but Christmas knitting has now taken a priority over it. Someone asked me last week I think, about my skirt. That's on the back burners, but I will be working on it after I finish my sweater and a few other things. I'm hoping to have it in time for spring, which seems so far away but will probably be here before we know it.

Again, happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate. Drive safe if you're traveling and eat lots of turkey (or if you don't eat meat, enjoy the rest of the fixings!) I have to go make a gluten free pumpkin pie from scratch now!

FO Friday 45

Happy Friday! To be honest, I almost forgot about this post! I was busy dyeing tons of yarn today, and have great new colorways to share on Monday (on the Candy Skein website/Ravelry group) and on Tuesday here on the blog. It's all Yummy fingering, some kettle dyed and a few hand painted! The new colors will inspire you to think toward your Autumn knitting.

Not much is going on this weekend for me. We were thinking of going to Los Angeles, but my husband has been a little under the weather. That gives me time to work on my skirt, trying to get a little further on it so I can start my Candy Skein KAL shawl. More on that later!

My swap partner hasn't received her swap package yet, so I don't want to give too much away. I decided to share this picture, of the little guy smelling the one bloom (so far) on my gardenia bush. It doesn't show too much. Come back next Friday when I can share more pics of him!

I promise to post Sunday for Year of Projects! I've been pretty bad about writing dedicated posts for it.

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 51

Happy Wednesday everyone!!! It's hump day, so don't get too excited, as we still have a few days until the weekend. Speaking of weekends, how did Comic Con go you ask? Splendid (see below, especially if you're a Doctor Who fan)!

That's right, me with the Tardis. WITH THE TARDIS!!! It even lit up and made the Tardis sound. If you don't think that's cool, check out my next picture.

Who is that, you ask? Well, I'll give you a few guess, but it shouldn't take long. That's right...MATT SMITH AND KAREN GILLAN (though she got totally cut off by the stupid guy standing in front of her, BUT you can see her profile kind of.)

Not the best photos in the world, but the ones I got closer were blurry as people were knocking into me. It was mad. If you'd like to watch the interview they were giving while I took this pic, you can watch it here. I wanted to go to the Doctor Who panel on Sunday, but people were already lining up at 12pm Saturday afternoon for the 12:30pm Sunday afternoon start time. Insanity. Matt and Karen were actually handing out Tardis burritos to those in line around midnight. So so awesome.

Okay, this IS a WIPW post, so I better get to it.

Why doesn't the skirt look any bigger you ask? Is it ACTUALLY smaller than last week, you ask? Why yes, yes it is, or maybe around the same. That's because I took it to my sister's house last week while watching my nieces. Garter stitch with short rows, how hard could it get? Well, apparently when a 2 year old gets tangled in the yarn while getting down from the couch when my head is turned, promptly pulling off several stitches from the needles...very hard. I realized at the time of panic, that I don't know how to fix dropped garter stitches. I didn't realize I did it wrong until I had already knit several rows more. I took it to a friend the next day who's in my knitting group (and works at one of my LYS) to see if she could drop down and fix it, but alas, I had screwed it up too much. Not only did I fix it wrong, I twisted stitches when trying to put them back on, as well as knitted too many rows. Once she dropped down to fix my mistakes, she couldn't successfully pick them back up without it looking like...well, crap. So, I sat as I watched her frog to the point of the problem (which was okay since she was doing it. I didn't have the strength to frog that much). I also had a little other mistake that was fixed with the frogging, so no biggie. I hope to get jamming on this again, but I've had to finish my swap monster.

That's all I'm currently/actively on. Can you believe it? August 1st I'll have to start my shawl for the Candy Skein KAL/CAL, so I'm kind of holding off starting something new. That doesn't mean I'm itching to get something new on the needles! Then again, I have a few WIPs that I've put down and haven't picked up recently. Maybe I should finish those before even thinking of starting something else (other than the KAL shawl).

Friday I'll have the monster to share, if my swap partner gets it in time. If not, I'll have to share it next week. :(

Don't forget, next Wednesday is week 52, a WHOLE YEAR OF WIPW! Look for something special to turn up.

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 50

I have to admit, when I just wrote the title of this post "Work in progress Wednesday 50" I almost had a heart attack. 50, the big 50. Holy crap, when did that happen? Now, I know I seem to bring this up each week, but can you believe it? We've been participating in WIPW for ALMOST A YEAR. That's right, in two weeks it will be a year and I'm so proud that I have yet to miss a week. Let me just pat myself on the back for a moment. ;)

Okay then. I'm going to say this, we need to do something special for WIPW 52, or should it be WIPW 53, because that's the start one the new WIPW year? I plan to do some kind of giveaway (I've been thinking about it, but have been in denial that it's so close now), but I'm not 100% sure what yet. I also plan to do a special giveaway/celebration for the year anniversary of Tami's Amis, which is coming up on August 2nd. You should expect some Candy Skein yarn to be included, that's for sure!

Okay, now onto WIPW!

Again, I'm still working on my monster for the swap. Sorry to say, I still can't share it too much, but here is another ambiguous picture, just so you can believe me that I've been working on it. LOL I was afraid to do the feet, but once I got into it, I realized that it wasn't as hard as the instructions looked. Of course, I'm not finished with it, but so far, so good. For those asking last week what yarn I'm using, it's Knit Picks Chroma in Prism.

The skirt doesn't look like I've worked on it TOO much, but I have, honest! Though I've been focusing on the monster, I've been giving some time to the skirt, but the pleat takes forever because it's short rows. I'm almost done with the first pleat! YAY I really like this project, because it's pretty easy since it's just garter stitch and I don't really need to pay too much attention. As long as I remember (or can tell) which stitch is the wrap and turn, then I'm golden. It's great TV knitting. I will say though, I'll be working on this for awhile because it's in fingering weight. I should have just done worsted, even though the pattern calls for fingering. LOL

That's it for me this week! Hope everyone has a great day and I look forward to checking out all your projects.

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 49

Happy Wednesday everyone! I want to start off by apologizing that I've been bad about getting around to everyone's links from last week. I'm so sorry if I didn't get to your blog for WIPW or FO Friday, but frankly, it's hard to keep up! As you can see from my Candy Skein post, I was very busy dyeing yarn, not that I'm complaining! I just feel bad when I don't get around to commenting. I try to read each post and comment, and feel that if I'm going to quickly click each and just say something about the picture, it wouldn't give yours posts a fair shake. That being said, I have to watch my nieces this week, so I won't get to many today, but I promise to try to visit all of them by Thursday night. ::crossing fingers::

Now to this week's knitting!

Well, that doesn't look like the cowl, does it? You guessed it. I started something new instead of doing the button band for it. You can just call me a coward now and get it over with. Instead, I started the pleated skirt I've been dying to make! It's knit in short rows, all garter stitch. This is my first time trying to do the wrap around & knit thing to not cause holes. Actually, who am I kidding, this is the first time I've done short rows that weren't socks. With a little help from my Monday night knitting group (I just love them!!!), I think I understand, but we'll see. Thanks Teri! Oh yes, and you probably want to know the yarn, right? I'm doing it in Knit Picks Stroll Tonal in Thunderhead. It's soooo pretty! Get used to looking at this project, because it is going to take awhile!

Next up is this really close up picture of the monster I'm knitting. I don't want to show more of it than this because it's for a monster swap I'm doing and JUST in case she checks out the blog, I don't want to ruin too much of the surprise. He's going pretty good, and I'm happy so far! :)

Well, that's it for me this week. What are you working on?

Year of Projects: To Start a New Project or Not...

That is the question, right? As I sat down this morning, ready to knit, I realized that the few WIPs I've been switching back and forth to are at stopping points. Now, not good stopping points mind you.

You see, I'm working on my cowl (seen above), which is the Pedestrian Crossing cowl. I like this cowl, love the yarn but I'm at a crappy part. What's that you ask? Well, if you follow the blog for WIPW and FO Friday, you'll know it's the button holes. You see, these are the first button holes I've ever had to make, so I'm a little nervous. The instructions are a little funky and I'm afraid of ruining it. I know, I know, I can always frog back to before the button holes, but I'm scared. That's right, scared. I just need to get over it, because I seriously have the button holes and then a few rows of garter stitch before I can cast off. Sounds easy, right? Well, we'll see.

The second project is a monster I started awhile ago, and then when I joined a monster swap on the Knit Picks Ravelry group, it spurred me on. I've gotten to the point of needing to stuff the body, add the eyes and the belly button. I know it's not hard, and this isn't the first monster I've made, but I'm always a little apprehensive because this really determines if the monster will be cute or not, you know what I mean? I'm not going to share a pic of that one right now, because as I said, I'm doing a swap and don't want to ruin it for the recipient if she's checking this blog. I may just post a close up pic of him for WIPW this next week, but won't give too much away.

So, those are my two projects. Instead of just getting down to business on either, what did I do this morning? I cast on for the knitted skirt on my YoP list. I won't share a picture (though the pic above is the yarn I'm using for it), Knit Picks Stroll in Thunderhead), because all I have is the cast on, so not very exciting. Now I have to sit down and figure out the weird short row instructions before I get started. We'll see how it goes, but I figure once I get the short rows down, it should be easy since it's all garter stitch. ::crossing fingers::

I know I should just concentrate on finishing the cowl and working more on the monster, and I will...maybe tomorrow.

How are you doing on your YoP list? Have you cast aside a project for another? Are you working on multiple projects or trying to finish one as fast as possible to start another?

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 38

Hey everyone! I hope you're having a great week. I'm going to keep this pretty brief as I have been in front of the computer a ton this week. If you read my post yesterday, you know that I will be opening my shop next Tuesday. Because of this, I have been very very very busy. I've taken all new photos of my yarns, finished building my website, design and order my business cards and am still in the process building the inventory on my Artfire store so that everything will be ready for me to "flip the switch" Tuesday. I guess you can call all of that work a WIP in itself. I'm also trying to dye the last of the un-dyed yarn I have in stock so that I can open the store with as many hanks of yarn as possible.

That brings me to another WIP that I don't have a picture to show. It's a new self-striping that I swatched, or am in the process of swatching for the store. I'm far enough along with it, that if I show it to you, you'll see the whole color scheme, so I'm going to save the picture for next week.

Now on to WIPs I have pics of:

Not a great photo, but you get the idea. I'm really trying to make a dent in this blanket as I would like to have it finished soon. Each row seems to take forever, due to working it length wise like I mentioned last week. Now that the colors have repeated, I really like it. I wasn't sure at first, since the light color is SO light compared to the other two. Anyway, I'm happy with what I've finished on it, but not on the progress that I've made. It's also kind of hard to work on such a heavy, warm project due to the weather being nice. Today is supposed to be 82 degrees, so the blanket isn't the ideal project to work on.

What's that beautiful yarn you ask? Why, that's more Knit Picks Chroma in Prism! When I ordered the yarn for my scarf, I bought this extra ball for just this purpose and that purpose is another monster!. When I got the order, I was so excited, but then I hit that wall with the monster I was working on at the time, now named Roger. This time, I'm making Harold the Houseplant Monster. I picked him for a few reasons, one being it will be a challenge to do the hands and toes, and I wanted to make sure that I learned something new, just like I did with Roger. I probably won't be getting this done any time soon though.

I have too many other things to do. I need to officially start my tank top, and also I've been dying to start my first pair of socks. So many projects in my queue and yarn in my stash, so little time. I may be bothering some of you for some help on my first pair of socks, so watch out for my trolling your Ravelry mailboxes or annoying you here. :)

On another note, I'm really a really fun knitting book, but I'll wait to share any more about it until later. I plan to write a review of it, despite it being an older book. I was lucky to randomly find it at one of our antique malls for $2.50!

FO Friday 31

How is it Friday again? Where did this week go? Insanity. I didn't get a ton of knitting done, but as you could see from WIPW this week, I only had the assembling to finish for my little knit monster. I started Petunia the Patio Monster by Rebecca Danger on February 7th. You read that right...FEBRUARY 7TH. I cruised through the body and thought I would cruise through the legs and arms. I guess I got too cocky after learning the 3 needle bind off with ease. I tried to start the legs/arms with DPNs like the pattern suggests a billion times. With much frustration, I wanted to throw it across the room, but instead decided to try the magic loop for them. That's how I did the body and it was so easy, of course I could do it...except at that point I was so frustrated, I couldn't seem to cast on a simple 6 stitches and then do k1f&b to start the legs/arms. I was practically in tears so I put it away and forgot about it. I was then checking out the group on Ravelry for Rebecca's designs and BAM, a light bulb went off for some reason. I picked it back up and did the start of the arms/legs with no problem! I just needed to step away for awhile I guess. I'm so glad I did.

As soon as I finished my monster, I realized that he didn't look much like a Petunia, well, because he's a he. At least he looks like one, don't you agree? So, I'll stop rambling so you can officially meet Roger!

Materials Used:

Knit Picks size US 7 needles
Berroco Comfort Worsted
Size 12mm safety eyes
White felt
Tapestry needle

Despite the name change, Roger informed me that he is still a garden monster. Here he is making a wish at my neighbor's fake wishing well.

Here's Roger hanging by the pond off my back deck, enjoying the late afternoon sun.

Roger definitely didn't want me to share the crotch shot, but I couldn't resist showing how clean I stitched him up! I'm super proud of it.

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 37

Happy Wednesday! This will be short and sweet, as I am in LA for the LA Kings hockey playoff game on Tuesday night. I just have to say, GO KINGS! I hope to have time to comment on everyone's posts when I get home, but it may be later in the day. Have a great day!

What is that you ask? IT'S MY KNITTED MONSTER! I know he looks almost like a chalk outline of himself, but trust me, all of the pieces are there minus the face pieces. I can't explain to you how excited I am. I can't wait to show you the FO on Friday. I did cheat a little, and finished him right after I took this photo. :)

Work-in-Progress Wednesday 28

I'm working on the same projects this week, but have made a little progress. I finished helping my sister move this week, which was great to get through. It was something that I knew was coming, but was dreading it beyond belief. Like everyone, I hate moving. I'm glad she's the one and not me, but it's still not fun helping. I'll hopefully have time for some knitting soon, which I'm excited about. Editing is almost done and then I'll be plotting my new book.

Last time you saw my monster, Petunia the Patio Monster by Rebecca Danger, it was just the start of the magic loop. I must say, going through the process, magic loop is a little slow moving the needles back and forth, but I still love it. I didn't have to worry about the other needles as I would with DPNs or double circs. As you can see in the first picture, I finished the body area. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. There are a few areas where the the yarn piled a little, but huge a huge deal. I've learned SO many things with this project so far and will learn more with the arms and legs. First, the magic loop. Second, the 3 needle BO, which I'm so proud of, I shared with a second picture. I didn't have a 3rd US7 needle, so I changed the back needle to a US6 and used the 7 not on the cable to do the actual BO. I think it turned out great. One thing I'm disappointed about, I hoped to finish the project for FO Friday, but I need US7 DPNs for the arms/legs. I hope to get them sometime this week. :)

I haven't done too much work with this, but it's to the point where I'm just working sc all the way up and not increasing/decreasing. I'm making the pattern up as I go. You may remember, it's going to be my manuscript holder when I'm editing away from the house. I hope to finish this soon, but sc is kind of slow.

I've worked a little on my scarf, but again, it's a garter knit scarf so not too much to show. I hope to really crank through it this weekend, as I'll have a lot of relax time on my hands. :)
