The Librarians and the Fables of Doom

The Librarians is a new series on TNT here in the US. I tried it out because, as a librarian, I'm always interested to see how we are portrayed in pop culture. It's a thing for librarians, the majority of which are not buttoned up, bespectacled spinsters with a shushing finger and obsession with cats. I admit to the often bespectacled and occasionally buttoned up myself though, but I am far from typical and much less interesting than most of the librarians I've known.

Episode 6, And the Fables of Doom, aired this past Sunday night and it has A LOT of fun fairy tale references in it from Emperor's New Clothes to Little Red Riding Hood to a troll under a bridge in Three Billy Goats Gruff--and that's all in the first ten minutes. Anyway, if you are in the US, the episode is available to stream online for free for a month or so, so I am providing a link. There's a list of 57 fairy tale magical items from fairy tales and folklore and some overall kitsch, but it's fun overall. I'd consider the series from what I've seen so far--I've not watched them all--to be family safe, fine for most school age kids and up. There is some jeopardy and violence but not to the levels of say, Doctor Who or any of the superhero shows on right now. Yes, I watch Arrow and Flash regularly with the hubby.

Episode description:

Near a small town in Washington, a truck is thrown off a bridge and the clipping book sends the Librarians to investigate. They find that the event was caused by a troll, and that other strange events have been occurring in the town, each fitting into the pattern of a well-known fairy tale. The cause is traced to an old book that has recently come into the possession of the town's own librarian (René Auberjonois). The Librarians must race to stop the effect even as they themselves are swept into the stories.

New Book: The Mythology of Grimm: The Fairy Tale and Folklore Roots of the Popular TV Show

The Mythology of Grimm: The Fairy Tale and Folklore Roots of the Popular TV Show by Nathan Robert Brown is released this week.

As I have said before, one of the things I've enjoyed about NBC's Grimm has been the attention to folklore. And how refreshing that it hasn't been Disney versions of folklore either, but I digress. While I have not watching the series very closely--I do watch and keep up with it some--and there have been some interesting episodes and interpretations of fairy tales and they have pulled from some unexpected folklore at times, too. So this book might be an interesting exploration of the series and its folkloric inspirations. I haven't read it but for fans of the show, I am sure it is a must buy.

Book description:

NBC’s hit television series Grimm pits modern detective Nick Burkhardt of the Portland Police against a cast of terrifying villains—lifted directly from the pages of classic fairytales. In the world of the show, the classic stories are actually a document of real events, and Nick himself is descended from a long line of guardians, or Grimms, charged with defending humanity from the mythological creatures of the world.

From The Big Bad Wolf to Sleeping Beauty, The Mythology of Grimm explores the history and folkloric traditions that come into play during Nick’s incredible battles and investigations—tapping into elements of mythology that have captured our imaginations for centuries.

Hobbit House in Montana

Saw this online this morning and thought I would share for the Hobbit fans out there. I loved all the fairy houses around the house especially. It's very tempting to install a little door to the unknown somewhere in my yard....

A Bargain and A Little TV Discussion: Grimm Season 1 on DVD for $19.99

I rarely look at Target ads anymore, but did this week and saw that Grimm: Season One is $19.99 on sale this week at Target. And sure enough, Amazon price matched it this morning, so it is also $19.99 there.

I haven't been writing regular coverage of Grimm or Once Upon a Time or Beauty and the Beast this season due to time constraints--and I don't manage to keep up with watching them very well either--although I try to stay informed with them through TV review sites and such. That said, I have found myself watching all the episodes of Grimm since it returned from hiatus and the show has definitely grown on me more for entertainment purposes although the folklore elements seem to have atrophied. Poor NBC, Grimm is the only show I watch on that network. And they have upped the presence of women on the show which also makes it more enjoyable for me. I am hoping it gets renewed.

Once Upon a Time doesn't need my coverage. It has a large, loyal fan base and is, of course, the show I am asked about the most when SurLaLune comes up during my conversations with people in my "real" world. The Season 2 DVDs are already up for preorder, too. This one should be renewed for a third season very easily. I admit I am not a fan of the "evil queen should be lovable to all of us" storytelling. There are consequences for bad behavior--many fairy tales remind us of that!--and whatever the antihero sympathetic motivations offered, she has done some despicable stuff and should not be trusted but kept on a tight leash. Guess I've known too many real people like that to make a hero out of one of them. Has everyone forgotten she put a knife in her own father?

Beauty and the Beast barely resembles its inspiration show and is on the bubble for renewal. Hence the upping of the sexual levels the last few weeks. It looks like a CW show--it's like there is the same set designer for the entire network--which I now know since John and I are regular viewers of Arrow, having forgiven its flaws a while back ourselves. Which I admit is often my criteria for TV watching these days--what shows will give me a few minutes of something to watch with the hubby and chill for a few minutes with him? Arrow and Grimm and Elementary fit that need better than the others.

So which shows are you watching? Or not watching? What's your favorite?

Tonight: Beauty and the Beast Premieres on the CW

Beauty and the Beast premieres on the CW tonight. Above is a video with the stars discussing the fairy tale and original series inspiration--there isn't much. But there is also talk that the Beast is going to morph more over the series as the DNA tampering (or whatever it is) takes over more of his body. That could be interesting....

From 'B&B' CAST ON TAKING ON A CLASSIC FAIRY TALE By ROBERT PACE where there is a video I cannot embed, too:
"With every show like this that's a remake or a re-imagining...you kind of start with a blank slate in some ways," said Kreuk, who played "Lana Lang" on Smallville. "You get to learn from what other things did previously, but it's a re-imagining. It's something entirely new, so I think you have to approach not with the other stuff in mind but just with 'What do we want to do with this new material?'"
The novelty of the show is accompanied by a modern setting, with Kreuk playing a detective and Ryan playing a military doctor as the respective beauty and beast. Although the modern adaptation creates a new atmosphere for the show, Ryan assures that the show still preserves key themes from the original tale.
"We keep the themes of [the original] 'Beauty and the Beast,' which is what we bring from the old stories or re-imaginings, and make it our own" the New Zealand native said.
So who is going to watch?

Once Upon a Time Season 2: Less Fairy Tales?

Looks like there will be less and less fairy tale coverage of OUAT. And, yes, reading between the lines is that the focus is really more about Disney characters coming to visit than anything else. Mulan, Captain Hook, all Disney animation. I don't think we will be seeing Jane Eyre. We're more likely to see

or Herbie the Love Bug--or wait! Isn't that Emma's car already?

From 'Once Upon a Time' producers pledge intense season 2 by James Hibberd at EW:

Here’s what I find interesting about the characters you’re adding this season. Mulan is a Chinese historical figure. Captain Hook is an early 20th century literary creation and Lancelot is a fifth-century possible historical figure. Those aren’t fairy-tale characters.

KITSIS: Go back and look at the pilot when you see Henry’s book and the book flips [through the pages of illustrations from different stories]. Also the episode with the Mad Hatter when you see all the doors [to other worlds]. If you Tivo-pause those doors there are some that look different than what you might think.

HOROWITZ: Fairy tales are ground zero. They’re the first stories we hear … Will Chewbacca show up in Storybrooke? Probably not, because that’s a Lucasfilm property.

KITSIS: But he’s welcome to!

You play a lot with Disney characters. What’s something you’re not allowed to do?

KITSIS: Cinderella is not going to be doing an 8-ball in a Boogie Nights scene.

But you wouldn’t write that anyway.

HOROWITZ: You get the sense of where the line is and you try to push as far over that as you can without going too far. We want to do cool dark stories, but we don’t want to sully the characters. We had Snow “under a curse” and not behaving as herself, capture and torture a guard with an axe and threaten him. It was very real to what our Snow was doing at the time, but it’s not something traditionally Disney would want to do with that character.

KITSIS: That was our Quentin Tarantino moment.

HOROWITZ: And we had things like the Red Riding Hood episode where she kills her boyfriend and eats him. We’re getting families to watch this, but we were able to get the dark things we wanted to do.

KITSIS: For us it’s about character. Everybody has darkness in them.

Cinderella Carriage on Shipping Wars

So I walked into the room the other night where John was falling asleep to some reality TV. The show happened to be Shipping Wars and one of the odd shipping items in this episode (Wheels of Misfortune) was one of the prettiest Cinderella carriages I have ever seen. Funny how that happens sometimes. I've watched two hours of TV this week (So You Think You Can Dance finale!) and an extra five minutes which happened to be this carriage by random chance. And as I saw them start to disassemble it, I refused to watch.

Let's face it. Cinderella carriages are practically a dime a dozen anymore. And, persnickety as I am, I never really cared to ride in one. The cheese factor is even higher than normal and despite my love of fairy tales, my dreams of living a princess fantasy have been pretty nonexistent most of my life. I didn't want to go through what fairy tales inflict upon them, I think. I always preferred to be a Charlie's Angel or a superhero as a kid and that instinct has stuck around. I was more thrilled with my oceanside carriage ride on Prince Edward Island--part of our travel package or I probably wouldn't have done it, silly me--back in 2008. That was more of a surrey so it had me thinking of Anne of Green Gables and Oklahoma!, not once of Cinderella. And, no, I am not an expert on carriage styles but I know a surrey from a phaeton. Usually.

But when this carriage was shown up close and personal in the show, I found myself wanting to ride in it. I didn't finish watching the episode but it lasted in my memory long enough to make me look it up the next morning. And then I went through several Cinderella carriages before I happened upon this one again. The seller has some amazing carriages but no more Cinderella ones, alas. I'm even more convinced this is one of the superior examples of its ilk. The carriage now resides in Kemah, Texas with a carriage ride company so I won't be riding in it anytime soon but I'll remember it for a while.

The picture doesn't do it justice but the $12,000 price tag may demonstrate it's expense and high level construction. All of that glass was pretty stunning and the wrought iron work was exquisite.

Once Upon a Time Season 2 Trailer

That's the preview for the second season of Once Upon a Time. There's talk of Mulan and Captain Hook and other interesting things. Which also makes me weary, I admit. Is it just me or are most of the best parts of the show independent of the Disney film inspirations? I know I am in the minority and I am grateful the show is a breakout hit since it has people talking and reading fairy tales, too, but I wish I could mash this one up with Grimm, take my favorite parts, add some more and make the show that I would adore.

I am pleased that the ending of last season blew things up and gives us a whole new premise for Season 2 though.

Season 1 has been steadily dropping in price on DVD all week, too, unless it pops up again in price before this post goes live.

Latest Trailer for CW's Beauty and the Beast

Have you seen this latest trailer for the upcoming Beauty and the Beast on CW? It premieres on October 11th, a month from today so I am expecting more and more press to start appearing on it.

So far the most common complaint, not just from me, is that the hero is no Beast. A scar makes him beastly? And we won't even get into how insulting that is to war veterans--like the hero--who bear worse scars than this. Ick. Yes, he may be beastly in other ways, such as a tendency for violence, but that then leads us into other prickly issues about abuse, doesn't it? I hope not, but it's always a possibility.

And after all that, I bet this is going to be a big hit for CW's audience. But for now we'll play the waiting game. And worry just a little...

Price Drop and Deal on ABC's Once Upon a Time DVD Set

Once Upon a Time: The Complete First Season has dropped to $29.99 on Amazon this week. If you preordered, you should receive a refund if you paid more than that.

Also, there is a way to save more on it through a special deal on ABC TV DVD sets.

Save $10 on Hot New ABC TV Titles

Order two eligible ABC television titles like Once Upon A Time: The Complete First Season 5-Disc DVD or Castle: The Complete Fourth Season 5-Disc DVD to save $10 on your total purchase. Offer ends September 30, 2012.

There are several DVD sets to choose from--my personal pick would be Castle, of course, since there have been a couple of fairy tale inspired episodes from them over the years.

Fairy Tale Films and Women

I hope you didn't miss this interesting article which quotes some people regularly referenced here at SurLaLune.

From Are new raft of fairy tale films and TV shows fair to their female characters? By Gretchen Van Benthuysen:

Dr. Jack Zipes, a retired University of Minnesota professor and author of more than a dozen books, including “The Enchanted Screen: The Unknown History of Fairy-Tale Films” and “Breaking the Magic Spell: Radical Theories of Folk & Fairy Tales,” says the message films such as “Mirror Mirror” and “Snow White and the Huntsman” deliver is that women must compromise their femininity to succeed.

“‘To become a true woman, you first must become a man,” he says. “In ‘Mirror Mirror,’ Snow White trains to use a sword to defeat the queen. In ‘The Huntsman’ she must become a warrior.”

Even in the animated film “Brave,” released in June, Princess Merida splits open her dress as she relies on her archery skills to undo a beastly curse. “She uses a bow and arrow and wants to become a man, subliminally,” Zipes adds.

and

“No strategy for survival is solely masculine or feminine,” says Kate Bernheimer, editor of “My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales,” who sees things differently. “Many old fairy tales feature women and girls surviving using a multitude of strategies. Fairy tales are possibility spaces, but clichĂ©s are locked boxes."

“I’m less interested in Snow White’s misogynistic feelings. I’m not interested in the mother figure in terms of survival. Fairy tales create rather than prevent potential for victims,” she explains. “They offer radical solutions to very bad problems, very real problems.

“The Snow White character is a survivor who wins in the end,” Bernheimer says. “How she survives is a magnetic story for artists and audiences regardless of the way the details around her are used, for better or worse. She is a strong heroine and the story has a sublime ending. “

The beauty of a fairy tale, she says, is it’s open to any interpretation.

Grimm Season 1 on DVD Today

Just a reminder that Grimm Season 1 was released on DVD and Blu-Ray today in the US. Amazon has dropped the price on the sets by 50% the last few days and I doubt the price will last that long. Its sales ranks show that it is selling pretty well, which is always a good thing since all revenue keeps the show in production. I've seen one commercial during the Olympics coverage so hopefully the show will find a bigger audience when season two starts next week.

DVD description:

The classic Grimms' fairytales come to life like never before in this "dark and imaginative" (Mike Ayers, CNN.com Entertainment) series from the producers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Portland homicide detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) discovers he's descended from a long line of "Grimms," who are charged with keeping balance between humanity and the creatures of myth. With newly awoken abilities to detect the evil lurking among us, Nick struggles to keep his old life separate and safe as he becomes ever more entrenched in the ancient rivalries of the Grimm world. Now, watch back-to-back and uninterrupted all 22 Season One episodes of this uniquely evocative series that critics rave "offers genuine scares" (Michelle Tauber, People).

ABC's Once Upon a Time at Comic Con

From 'Once Upon a Time' panel at Comic-Con: Captain Hook is coming! (Watch first-look teaser here) by Sandra Gonzalez:

The Big Revelations:

+ Captain Hook is coming!
+ We will find out the identity of Henry’s father — and Jennifer Morrison knows who it is! “We talked about it early on,” she said. Kitsis’ tease? “I think Goofy is probably going to be Henry’s father,” he joked. “We gotta give Emma more credit here,” Morrison retorted.

+ We will learn the mythical identity of Dr. Whale this season.

+ There’s room for Kristin Bauer van Straten to return as Maleficent! “I didn’t see her body,” said Horowitz.

+ What DOES it mean that “Magic is coming”? “I wonder if we will find that out. I bet you we will have to watch season 2,” said Kitsis. “We don’t know if there’s anything to go back to.” Horowitz added: “Who knows if there’s anything there?”

+ The first few episodes will not disappoint. “I never could have conceived of the brilliance that is the first couple of scripts,” said Goodwin. “I can say that as an audience member it’s exactly what I’d want to see.” Added Kitsis: “The show is not going to change from the one you loved last year…we’re still going to go back and forth and meet new people along the way. “

+ We will find out what happened to Mr. Gold’s son Bae this season.

No comment on the Captain Hook element from me. Moving on...

And here's another preview--you can see Jack and the Beanstalk if you watch carefully:

From 'Once Upon A Time': More season 2 scoops from the executive producers
by Nuzhat Naoreen
: (This is the most indepth article if you want to read just one in full.)

The impact of magic on Storybrooke:

KITSIS: “Magic as we know always comes with a price and we are introducing it to a world where it has never been before and I think that’s going to have unpredictable results. It’s going to affect everybody this season because that’s what’s more fun.”

Everyone’s memories returning:

KITSIS “I think the thing that we are really excited about is the fact that not only is magic in Storybrooke but everybody knows who they are. I think that is going to enable us to really dig deeper into the characters, now that they can actually deal with all the issues in their life and their past and their future.”

HOROWITZ: “One of the things that’s interesting to us to explore is this notion that just because the memories have returned does not mean that the past 28 years did not happen. Those memories, the Davids, the Mary Margaret, the Mr. Golds, all those people, who they were existed and what they did actually happened and those are the things that will have to be dealt with.”

And the Season 2 footage screened at Comic Con:

More bits from Comic-Con 2012: 'Once Upon a Time' welcomes Captain Hook and Jack and the Beanstalk:

Who will we meet at the beginning of the episodes come fall? Well, in addition to the purple smoke monster, there were Mulan, Sleeping Beauty and Jack and the Bean Stalk, to name a few.

Although fall seems so far away, rest assured that it won't be too long until the new characters are introduced. "Very early in the season we're going to start to see some of these people join our group," says Horowitz. But the new guys won't take the focus away from the core group. "You are going to meet these people through our characters," says Kitsis. Bonus: Dr. Whale gets a fairytale counterpart.

We'll also meet Henry's father, who may or may not be someone we've seen before. "It might be Sneezy," says Kitsis, who jokes that maybe it's not significant anyway. "His name's Jeff. He lives in a suburb outside of Chicago. It's not a big deal. It was a one-time thing."

One person who does know: Jennifer Morrison. "I think Goofy is probably going to be Henry's father," Kitsis says later on. "You've got to give Emma some more credit here, geez! I just feel like she's got some taste," Morrison replies.

And here's video of the actual panel:

NBC's Grimm on DVD and at Comic Con

Did you realize Grimm: Season One comes out on DVD in less than a month, on August 7th? Since the show is returning early, so is the DVD set. And on that note, here's some bits from articles about Grimm's appearance at Comic Con.

Bits from 'Grimm' Comic-Con panel: Footage from season 2 premiere reveals what's up with Nick's mom by Emily Rome:

Big revelations: Not many. The whole Grimm gang must have had a strict no-spoilers talk beforehand because none of them were very forthcoming. Lots of questions were met with variations on “You’ll have to wait and see.” Kouf at one point said, “We have a lot of ideas where we want to go with it. We just don’t want to tell you.” Even things that we thought were done deals had an air of mystery breathed into them. On what’s next for characters who have had the Wesen world revealed to them, Greenwalt said, “Who said Hank finds out? And who said Juliette remembers?”

***

Obvious fan favorite: If it wasn’t already clear on various message boards over the past season, it was definitely evident in the room that Mitchell’s portrayal of Monroe has quite the fan club. He got the biggest cheers when he appeared on the season 1 recap video screened at the beginning of the event and when he was introduced on the panel.

Bits from New threats add to tension in NBC's 'Grimm':

With his fiancée, Julie (Bitsie Tulloch), in a coma, his partner, Hank (Russell Hornsby), not far from a breakdown and his thought-to-be-dead mother suddenly very much alive, Nick's life promises to get even more complicated on the second season of NBC's Grimm (Aug. 13, 10 p.m. ET/PT).

***

"The Grimms were early profilers," executive producer David Greenwalt told a Comic-Con audience Saturday. "The people who wrote these stories could see these people."

***

Viewers will also learn more about Nick's superior, Capt. Renard (Sasha Roiz), and where he fits in a world of Grimms, Wesen and ordinary people. Roiz, however, wasn't giving any details away. "I'm just Capt. Renard."

As is the case with many shows with deep mythologies, fans who have been burned in the past by other shows wanted promises that Grimm would resolve all its mysteries during the course of its run. "I'll make sure that happens," executive producer Sean Hayes said.

NBC's Grimm at Comic Con

Have you seen these? Grimm has a presence at Comic Con this month and here are images of some of the promotional posters available there. And did you realize you only have about five weeks until the show returns? Glad to see NBC is supporting the show...

From TVLine:

TVLine not only has your first look at Grimm’s Season 2 key art below, we also have comic book whiz Whilce Portacio’s limited-edition Comic-Con promotional poster for the show!

Until then, you can go right on buzzing about the supernatural thriller. It’s certainly given us enough to discuss, what with NBC giving it an early premiere (on Monday, August 13, at 10pm/9c) to capitalize on Olympics hype and Lost alum Mark Pellegrino being cast as a coyotl.

Preview for CW's Beauty and the Beast

Oh, yes, I am behind on this. Other bloggers have already covered this on their blogs. And I don't have much to say about it. So I've kept putting it off. But I don't want to any longer and I did want it here on the blog.

It has been so long since I've watched the "inspiration" series for this series and I admit the preview inspired me to want to watch the pilot to that series more than this one.

Then there's the poster. Which really disappoints me--and I think misses the mark on the Beast--since I know for a fact that many fan of the original series adored the makeup and beastliness the makeup chair gave Ron Perlman. (And also have affection for his times as Hellboy, too.) This new beast is not a beast! It is rather laughable, actually. Someone has forgotten that a good actor with a great character to play will appeal more to the women viewers than a pretty face that is a dime a dozen on police dramas.

Is anyone else interested in an online viewing party of the original Hamilton/Perlman pilot episode sometime before this new one premieres?

Now I am even more curious about the ABC iteration we will also be treated to. The only recent news on it is that the star, Ruth Bradley, has been retained with ABC on a holding contract--if the series doesn't get picked up or renewed, she can be hired by them for another series, so they are hopeful at that studio.

Disney's The 7D

Coming to Disney Junior in 2014. From The 'Seven Dwarves' get a new look at CNN:

In case the two recent Snow White movies and "Once Upon a Time" weren't enough for you, Snow White is even having a moment on children's television.

The recently launched Disney Junior channel announced on Tuesday that they've started production on "The 7D," a reboot of Snow White's "Seven Dwarves."

Designed by Noah Z. Jones of the popular Disney series "Fish Hooks," "The 7D" look quite different from how we're used to seeing them.

"Our goal for Disney Junior is to engage kids with stories and characters that represent the very best of Disney storytelling," said Disney Junior Senior Vice President Nancy Kanter in a release.

"With 'The 7D,' we look to continue Walt Disney's legacy of reinterpreting classic folk and fairy tales in ways that delight new audiences. We're excited to re-imagine these familiar characters and put them in a new humorous setting that we think will entertain kids and parents alike."

So how about that, folks? There's a little more on the CNN site. You can also learn more at the Disney Wiki, like this:

The series takes place in the whimsical world of Jollywood, where Queen Delightful relies on the 7D – Happy, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Dopey, Grumpy and Doc – to keep the kingdom in order. Standing in their way are two laughably evil villains, Grim and Hildy Gloom, who plot to take over the kingdom by stealing the magical jewels in the 7D's mine. With seven very distinct personalities, the 7D always manage to save the day and send Grim and Hildy running back to their evil lair to try another day.

Snow White and the Seven Movies

In case you haven't seen this yet, here it is!

Where they messed up? Sleeping Beauty. With two tv shows on the horizon, it looks like Beauty from Beauty and the Beast is the next it girl. But it's hard to say her name without invoking Belle and Disney, so I don't mind the Sleeping Beauty reference, just think she may have to wait for 2014...

According to IO9, "Snow White and the Seven Movies was directed by Alberto Belli and was written by its fairest star Genevieve Farrell."
