Good Luck Sock Women's Little Red Riding Hood Sock

I bought some of these Good Luck Sock Women's Little Red Riding Hood Socks around Christmas when they were on sale and really fell in love with them. Little Red Riding Hood isn't my favorite fairy tale, but I do have much affection for it. These socks are colorful but actually blend well with my jeans or pants when wearing so I've even snuck them on for meetings and such. They hold up well and actually fit my size 10 US feet pretty well although they state they are sizes 5-9.

LilRed Slippers by Spring Step

Now these are some of the cutest slippers I've seen in a while if you love Little Red Riding Hood. These the Lilred Slippers made by Spring Step and come in beige or grey. I have images of both colors below and you can shop the web for them but they are not cheap slippers being by Spring Step. Amazon is spot on in the competitive pricing on these.

I own several pairs of Spring Step and Spring Step L'Artiste shoes and I will warn you to ALWAYS size up. I wear 41 European (sometimes even 40) and always need 42 in Spring Step. Ditto if they are sized USA--I wear a 9.5 to 10 and need the 11 in Spring Step. I pretty much wear the largest size they make. I wear average width and the width is always fine for me but the length is always too short if I don't size up. If you actually wear a 10.5 or 11 or larger, you are unfortunately out of luck. But if you have a small, dainty foot, the smaller end of these should fit great even if you think they may be too big. You read enough reviews for this brand and you will see that sizing is a common complaint about Spring Step although the shoes are gorgeous and well made, some of my favorites after Rieker/Remonte (in which I do wear a 41!) for fun sophisticated shoes.

Little Red Riding Hood isn't even my personal favorite fairy tale, but I have to admit I want these. I've had tile floors for a year now and need shoes/slippers around the house year round. I just may be able to justify these for myself. :)

Newish Book: Fashion in the Fairy Tale Tradition: What Cinderella Wore by Rebecca-Anne C. Do Rozario

Fashion in the Fairy Tale Tradition: What Cinderella Wore by Rebecca-Anne C. Do Rozario was released last year but I just discovered it myself. I've not seen more than the preview pages available online but what I've seen is very interesting!

Book Description:

Examines well-known fairy tales from the Grimm brothers and Perrault
Reveals a critical nexus of fairy tale and fashion that sheds light upon constructs of privilege with ramifications for class and gender studies of the genre
Covers early modern tales and the gradual decline of fashion-orientated fairy tales as well as identifing a resurgence in the twentieth century, when the stage and screen revived the glamour of fairy tale to appeal to the masses, culminating in the phenomenon of Disney princesses.

This book is a journey through the fairy-tale wardrobe, explaining how the mercurial nature of fashion has shaped and transformed the Western fairy-tale tradition. Many of fairy tale’s most iconic images are items of dress: the glass slippers, the red capes, the gowns shining like the sun, and the red shoes. The material cultures from which these items have been conjured reveal the histories of patronage, political intrigue, class privilege, and sexual politics behind the most famous fairy tales. The book not only reveals the sartorial truths behind Cinderella’s lost slippers, but reveals the networks of female power woven into fairy tale itself.

From a review of the book:

“This book seeks to investigate the role clothing and fashion plays in fairy tales and how fashion has actively shaped fairy-tale traditions, revealing the material cultures behind the most sartorial gestures. … The book is a useful addition to this expanding area of literature. It is well referenced and highlights a novel aspect of the fairy-tale tradition.” (B.C. Kennedy, Gramarye, Issue 14, 2018)

Chicken Leg Socks--Inspired by Baba Yaga?

Today has become an unofficial Baba Yaga day! After sharing the Lego Baba Yaga in today's earlier post, I wanted to share these funny socks that immediately inspired me to think of Halloween costumes and Baba Yaga possibilities throughout the year.

Not much to say about them, but they made me smile and imagine so I thought I'd share. And if you are by chance unfamiliar with Baba Yaga, go read some of her tales on SurLaLune.

Sorry, the image loader isn't working. I've added my own image captures just in case. They can be acquired in sets or just one color, see them all on the Amazon page where I found them.

Lauren Conrad Snow White Collection at Kohl's

Have you seen the Snow White collection by Lauren Conrad at Kohl's? It is selling quick because it is cute and/or romantic with most pieces not splattering anything overtly Disney on them. That's okay if you like that, of course, but I prefer subtlety when it comes to every day fairy tale themed clothing. I'm middle aged and was trained by my dad to not pay others to be their walking billboard. Unless I really ADORE something, of course, because clothing is rarely about absolutes.

I love florals so some of these pieces are my taste exactly. Same thing happened with the summer line of Alice in Wonderland by Lauren Conrad. And I don't even LIKE Alice in Wonderland but I own some cute pants from that line. Now I am crossing my fingers there will be a Beauty and the Beast line in the spring in conjunction with the movie with more clothes like these. Of course, Hot Topic and Torrid (since they are the same company) will have some, too, but they tend to be more kitschy although some of their recent Once Upon a Time line was subtle and more appealing to me, too, I admit. Shocked me!

As for the Lauren Conrad stuff, I fell in love with the Snow White Peasant Top and the Floral Tulle skirt. There are little apples on the peasant top which is a wink to me that this is a Snow White themed shirt, but that's it. No one else has to know unless they are savvy about the clothes or I tell them. That's the way I like it a lot of the time. And wonderfully enough--it also was a peasant top that flattered me which is sometimes iffy with peasant top styling. Because yes, I own the blue one below.

And, no this isn't an affiliate deal--I get no kickback or otherwise. I just really have enjoyed these Lauren Conrad special lines. I wonder if I missed previous ones...yes, I see I missed the Cinderella one but none of those looked like they work as well with my personal style. Or if they did, too late now!

New to DVD: After The Ball, a Fashion Industry Cinderella Story

After The Ball will be released to DVD next week in the US. It stars Portia Doubleday, Marc-Andre Grondin, Chris Noth, Lauren Holly, and Carlo Rota in a fashion industry inspired Cinderella story.

I saw the DVD listed online and thought, "Oh, I missed learning about a Hallmark Channel fairy tale movie!" But I was wrong. This was actually a theatrical release. However, some of the reviews say it is on par with a Hallmark Channel movie, so my instincts were right. Other reviewers enjoyed it for exactly what it is, so if you are an unapologetic Hallmark Channel film watcher--like some members of my family--this is for you.

Has anyone seen this one? It had virtually no publicity in my world this past year although IMDB lists its official US theatrical release as April 24, 2015.

Movie description:

Kates dream is to design for couturier houses. Although she is a bright new talent, Kate can not get a job. No one trusts the daughter of Lee Kassell, a retail guru who markets clothes inspired by the very designers Kate wants to work for. Who wants a spy among the sequins and stilettos?

Reluctantly, Kate joins the family business where she must navigate around her duplicitous stepmother and two wicked stepsisters. With the help of a prince of a guy in the shoe department, her godmothers vintage clothes, and a shocking switch of identities, can Kate expose the evil trio and save her fathers company?

And here's a trailer:

More Charlotte Olympia Fall 2013 Fairy Tale

Here are more images from the show that launched the Charlotte Olympia Fall 2013 Fairy Tale. The images are reposted from The Terrier and the Lobster's post, who in turn collected them from here and here and here. These provide some different perspectives on the design as well as some environmental design for the event.

Charlotte Olympia Fall 2013: Fairy Tale Handbags

And as promised, the handbag post, part of the Charlotte Olympia Fall 2013--of which I posted about the shoes today, too. I've also found some images of the line's launch which will share separately since they provide different angles and some fun environmental design, too, for the event. I like the book above and the cottage below especially. Which are your favorites?
