Changes...But Life Goes On

I've wanted to start this post a million times, but one word stops me every time...LIFE. There was a time when I was posting every single day and loved doing it. Then it was like exercising...it was easier NOT to do it as time went on lol. Change is inevitable I guess. We just need to accept it and move on.

Another reason why I've hesitated writing this post is I don't want you to think it is a "woe is me" post. I have always been the glass is half FULL person, always look for the positive in something, keep moving forward and learn from the experience. I do, however, want to share personal things because life isn't always about sewing, crafting and pretty decorations. We need to see or read that someone is going through similar experiences, because it may help...even in the tiniest of ways.

I know people are going through things in life that are much more difficult than we are right now, but none the less, it's changed our family once again and sharing things with you may help us both. As many of you know from past blog posts, my father has lived with us for over 11 years. We've been through just about everything you can think of...literally everything (from the passing of my mom, floods, fire, to good times and bad times etc), but once again "life" has hit the fan. My dad is 91 years old and his health is getting the best of him. He can't walk much any more due to a fall, has a choking and aspiration problem, seeing, hearing and his dementia is off and on.

We've had to move the furniture on his side of the house, so it's easier for him to move from room to room, we changed how he eats, how he sleeps (hospital bed now), we took away his car keys, shut off his internet access and pulled the breaker switch on his stove. We are in charge of giving him his medications, he needs help with personal care, health care professional are in and out of the house on a daily basis while I'm at work...and the list goes go.

He was a career military officer and teacher, so you can imagine the fight for power when he is with it mentally, especially when it's his 2 "daughters" telling him what to do. I'm the youngest of 5 children, so even worse that I'm the baby. The emotions run the gamut...frustration, anger, aggravation, pity, sadness etc. One minute he's with it and you're angry with him because he refuses to put thickener in his drink, so he won't aspirate liquids into his lungs and the next minute you feel pity for him, because he's trying to use the T.V. remote on the refrigerator and wondering why the channels aren't changing on the ice maker.

Needless to say, the stress level at our house on some days is to the moon and back. My husband is my rock. His love and strength through this never waivers and I love him to death. My family...Courtney, Kelsie, Courtland and Nick keep me busy, laughing and happy inside and out...and they don't even know they're doing it!  My sister is my partner in crime. She is always there for me and for my dad no matter what. If she and I didn't laugh together, we would cry for sure. We laugh so hard sometimes at all the crazy things that can happen in one day, I really should wear a Poise pad. Lol

I really try to look for the positive in each day, just to keep my sanity and this saying says it all!!

For the past month, we've moved a house full of his stuff to the storage room, paper work beyond comprehension, visiting nurses, long term care preparation, doctors appointments, hospice etc. We've learned a lot and the learning never ends.

Here are some quick bullet points that I want to share with you as "food for thought". Just a quick read even if you are not taking care of an elderly parent, relative or friend...we will all be in this situation ourselves one day.

Food For Thought for yourself or a loved one...

  • Living Will and Advanced Directives...make your wishes known legally, especially DNR (Do Not Resuscitate (here's a link I found for a quick definition).
  • Power of Attorney for health and Power of Attorney for financial matters. In our family my sister and I have POA for his health and my brothers have POA for his finances. These are a must. You will not have any legal rights to call for information from doctors, hospital or banks to make any decisions on your loved ones behalf without it.
  • Write a will for your possessions.
  • speaking of possessions...I am slowly but surely cleaning out my life of "stuff". I WILL NOT let this happen to my kids. I don't want them packing up boxes and boxes of junk in my attic or basement. Usually when things happen to elderly parents, the children are dealing with the important medical issues at that time and shouldn't be dealing with a house full of things. I have officially sworn off buying things from thrift stores for myself (I still buy for everyone else though). lol
  • Read the fine print for everything. My dad purchased long term care insurance years and years ago on his own. A hundred thousand dollars later and it's taking an act of God to get it activated. Not to mention he has to pay out of pocket for home care for the first 60 days before the insurance starts to pay. READ THE FINE PRINT.
  • Make your funeral wishes known. Think about purchasing a plot or crematorium.  Put away money for funeral costs. When the time is closer, some funeral homes let you pay in advance or pre-pay the total.
  • My parents sold their home and moved in with us, so that was not an issue, but you have to think about the elderly who still own their homes and what happens to that home if they go into a nursing home. Consult with a lawyer for further info, because every state is different and every situation is different whether that home is an asset to pay for nursing home care.

I know there is never an easy time to talk about or do these things, but I at least think about it and have it on your radar.

To end on a funny note...going through all this has certainly been an adventure much like a roller coaster, but mine is double the FUN having menopause along for the ride. Lol

Here are a few funnies to make you laugh...

Thanks for listening,
~Karen~

Have You Seen My Mojo? I Think I Lost It...

There was a time, not too long ago, when I was blogging every day. I was even getting posts done during the busy holidays. Then life got in the way. It's like exercise and dieting...once you get out of a routine, it's so easy NOT to do something.

We all have "things" in our lives...crazy schedules, work, family, travel, sickness etc. Whatever it is, we can usually handle it, work the changes into our lives and move on. January was crazy for me. I turned 50, traveled by myself to Florida to pack up and bring Kelsie home from her Disney internship and then I still had to de-christmas the house and pack it all away. At work, we changed over to a whole new computer system and digital x-rays, which after 34 years of old school dental records, threw me for a loop lol. However, my biggest challenge lately for losing my mojo and the reason for this post has been issues with my 90 year old father who lives with us.

Before I chat some more, you're probably wondering why I'm telling you all this. I debated long an hard about doing this post, because well, it's not a fun tutorial, recipe or decorating tip...it's just a peek into my crazy world. However, I know someone out there can relate, a conversation will start in the comment section and maybe this will help someone else in the same situation. Some of us have elderly parents or relatives, some of us know someone who has elderly parents or relatives and all of us will be an elderly parent or relative some day, so I'm hoping this post will resonates with at least one person out there.

Memory Jar Lamps…Shhh They're Christmas Gifts For My Daughters!

I have been wanting to make these memory jar lamps for both my daughters for a long time now. Courtney is living in her own apartment and Kelsie is working in Disney World, so the house is free to make things and put together gifts without anyone seeing them. I just have to keep them away from this blog and my facebook page. Lol

Do you remember this post I did a long time ago about hardware storage drawers? Click HERE if you want to visit that post. We bought these drawers for each of the girls when they were little to keep all their memorabilia and collectibles in.

memory jar lamps

Tooth Fairy money and the notes they wrote to her when they lost a tooth…

Collectibles from Disney trips and the ever popular rock and gem stone collection.

The memories in those drawers and the things I have saved for them too over the years are now in here!!!

A Memory Jar Lamp!!!

memory jar lamps

I bought both girls a fillable lamp at Target for $25.00 each. No lampshade though and boy are lampshades pricey.

memory jar lamps

Come on in a take a walk down memory lane with me…

I also have another idea if you don't want to use a lamp.

Falling Off the Face of the Earth 101...

Maybe I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, but the face of blogging…YES!! I don't know how this happened, but I haven't blogged in over 2 weeks. Well, I do know how it happened…life. Things went crazy and once I was out of the habit of blogging daily, it was pushed to the back burner. A big THANK YOU to everyone emailing, commenting and worried where I've been. I love blogging friends. You are the best!

I have mentioned over the years that my dad lives with us. He turned 90 last week! He's had health problem of the years, but things are coming more frequently. Most recently, he's been in the hospital with pneumonia. We has a choking problem and aspirated something. He's home and fine now, but we have visiting nurses, speech therapist and nutritionists, because he's so thin. He's still sharp though, which is helpful…the hard of hearing, not so much. I have to repeat myself so much and each time gets louder and louder. By the end, he's saying…"why are you yelling at me?" AHHHH!!! If I don't laugh, I will cry, Lol

He also has internal bleeding somewhere and can't get in under control. One surgery last month didn't work, so they took his keys away from him for fear that he might faint while driving. He is NOT happy about losing his keys (he thinks he's getting them back in 2 weeks). I'm thankful they took his key, but lots of doctors appointments to go to now. My dad also just lost his younger sister. I loved my Aunt Mary. She was the kindest person and was a major influence in my love of sewing. It hit my dad hard when she died, so lots happening with him.

We are also having a 90th birthday/family reunion here at our house in 2 weeks for my dad. My whole family is flying in and coming over, so that will cheer him up!! Lots of cleaning and organizing going on too. You know I've always said…if you want to really clean your house (like dust bunny clean), have a party! Lol

Courtney and Courtland are in their new apartment and loving it. They are only 45 minutes way and it was fun moving them in and setting things up. I've spent some time up there hanging draperies, so I have a few tips for apartment life and disguising vertical blinds.

Our daughter Kelsie is also going to Disney World for a 5 month internship with the Disney College Program. We are driving her down to Florida from Rhode Island in early August, so we're trying to pack her up for that. In the middle of it all, my 12 year old dependable van was not so dependable any more. We had to buy a new one. I love my new Toyota Sienna, but we haven't had a car payment in years, so that part is not so good!

We are all going through difficult times at some point. Life can hand you crazy situations. I have my loving husband and my family to go through this with me. My sister is always there for us too. We laugh a lot about all the things that happen to us. Telling stories and just being there for each other is most important, but sometimes it's good to get help from others who have been through the same things.

A few years ago, I started a club here for empty nesters when our daughters went off to school. I think that online blogging friends are the best help for advice and encouragement. I've been thinking about starting different clubs here again for everyone to help out with life's little issues.

The Full Nest…

Like our house was these last few months. Courtney and her fiancé Courtland were living with us to save money, Kelsie came home from college and her best friend Emily is living with us too, because she is working with Kelsie at the same country club. My husband and I and my dad makes 7 adults in one house. In the "Full Nest Club", maybe we can all share cooking, cleaning and organizing tips to keep life running smoothly.

The Empty Nest…

When the kids are gone and your house is a little quieter. Cooking for smaller numbers, missing your kids when they're gone and all the things that go along with kids flying the coop.

The Silver Nest..

Living with elderly parents is certainly a life experience. Laughs, frustrations, family, stories to last a lifetime and times you want to pull your hair out. If you have senior family members living with you, then the Silver Nest Club will be helpful for all of us.

The Baby Nest…

I want to add The Baby Nest, but I haven't been down that road in a while. I see grandchildren in the not so distant future, so maybe I will add it and get help from all of you with the "little ones". Even if you don't have babies of your own at home, you may have grand babies or you may watch little ones. It would be great to hear ideas and thoughts from others.

I'll have a post with all the clubs with tips and tricks I've learned along the way having lived in all situations. In the comment section, everyone can share THEIR tips and tricks to add to the club. Blogging and the computer can be the best connection we can make for info and making friends in the same situation.

If you can think of anything I can add to that next post let me know…I'd love to hear anything you have in mind.

Thanks again for always being there and looking out for me when I "fell off the face of the earth".

Commencement Gown Transformation…Grandma to Gorgeous

Our youngest daughter Kelsie graduates from college this coming Saturday!! We just can't believe how fast time flies. Courtney graduated last year and it seems like yesterday.

This past Saturday was Kelsie's commencement ball. She searched forever for "that" certain dress that she had in her head, but couldn't find it. We looked online and found some, but they were either too far away to be shipped in time or way too expensive!

Kelsie went to a small seamstress/dress shop in the town where her university is and found this dress that was the right color and lacy fabric, but not the halter, backless, mermaid style she wanted. She sent me this picture of her in the dressing room and asked what could be done. I told her to ask the seamstress, who was also the owner of the shop, if she could take the lace off the sleeves and use it to lengthen the dress. They would also need to narrow the bottom to give it a mermaid look. The back was open, but Kelsie wanted it altered more.

Here's the "before" in the dressing room…(love the black socks she had on!!)

You are not going to believe the fabulous transformation the seamstress did!!

How Do You Store Your Old Photographs?

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been missing in action the last week or so. I've been spring cleaning…even though it was 16 degrees this morning and spring seems like months away. I started in the basement, which has then dominoed to almost every nook and cranny in the house…moving furniture, switching things around etc.

One spot that was affected is where I store all our old family photographs. It's a project that I have been wanting to tackle for a very long time. One reason why I want to move and change things around here is a fear of losing all our photos. As most of you know, my 89 year old dad has lived with us for over 10 years. To be blunt…he is dangerous! He's had several mishaps and we've had floods and the fire alarm goes off a lot. We've installed an Alzheimer's attachment on his stove and try to use automatic shut offs on most everything.

That being said, I need a different system for my photos. If there was ever a fire in the house and my family was safely outside, the first thing I would like to grab would be our pictures.

Here's where we store them now…

I just need your opinion on how you store your photos…

Fear...

You've clicked on this post because you saw the title, right?

Fear...

Blogging is a wonderful thing...you can write about anything and share it with anyone who is willing to read it. Sew Many Ways is about crafting, organizing and sewing, but the title does say "a place to find more than just sewing".  I have been writing Sew Many Ways for almost year 4 years. I have readers and friends from the very beginning and new followers even today. Most of you I have never met before, but just to let you know,  I write and post as I live my life... I always try to be optimistic, my glass is "always" half  FULL, I appreciate even the littlest thing I have in life. Being positive is pretty much how I "try" live my life.

"Try" is the word though. Am I always successful? NO, because fear can steal your positive in a second. What is fear exactly? According to dictionary.com, fear is...

"a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain etc., whether the threat is real or imagined..."

We all have fears. I can't even begin to write about fear itself and I won't even try...we all know deep down inside what we fear. Well, I had a little tiny fear get the best of me these past three weeks. Why am I sharing this with all of you? Because sometimes we need a kick in the pants, to wake us up to see that fear is just an emotion, mostly imagined...as described in the definition. An emotion that we can control or it will control us.

The Last Hurrah...Boston Trip

The last weekend before our 2 daughters Courtney, Kelsie and Courtney's boyfriend Courtland go back to college, we usually plan a little mini trip. They all work so hard the entire summer, that last weekend is their only free time. We're about an hour and 30 minutes away from Boston, Massachusetts so that's our favorite place to go.

On our way back home we have another back to school tradition...Wright's Chicken Farm. It's not a farm really, but a delicious all you can eat chicken restaurant.

We stayed at the Marriott Copley hotel in the Back Bay area, which is attached to 2 malls...perfect for girls!! We also walked all over Boston...and I mean we walked. No taxis or subways. The weather was too nice! We did...

Here are a few pictures from our trip...

Five Napkin Burger restaurant. The best burgers any of us have ever had. Kelsie doesn't even eat hamburgers and she loved it.

Courtney and Courtland.

Kelsie always with her lemonade. This was fresh squeezed too.

Hubby and me...

Now onto the burgers...Gorgonzola with sautéed mushrooms and shallots for all the girls. We ordered broccoli because we like it, but also to relive some of the guilt!! LOL

Hubby's cheese burger...

Courtland's bacon and cheese. The fries were so good too.

Then another stop on the trip was Pinkberry. A frozen yogurt shop. Add as many toppings as you like. I had nuts and granola.

This was hubby's...I won't even try to defend this mess by saying it was frozen "yogurt" !

Courtney's was a little better with all fresh fruit and a few chocolate cover pretzels.

Here are the 2 Courts under the "Court St." sign.

Kelsie trying on a French beret. She looks like a 1960's beatnik. lol

In front of Paul Revere Mall on the Freedom Trail in the North End.

The ever famous Mike's Pastry in the North End too. A "must stop" if you go to Boston.

Cannoli, cannoli, cannoli...that's all I'm going to say!!

Boston Commons swan boats

Found this shot on google of Faneuil Hall. Shopping and more eating.

Then back home to Rhode Island in the northern part of the state. Wright's Farm for all you can eat chicken dinner.

The way it looks in these pictures, in a nut shell, we went to Boston to eat. Should have brought a heart defibrillator with us though. LOL

We had a great time as a family and love being with the kids. They all moved back to school this past Monday and we miss them already.

Hope you get a chance to visit Boston or the north east some time!!

Have a great weekend,
~Karen~
