Balestier win their first trophy

Starhub League Cup 2013 Final
Balestier Khalsa 4-0 DPMM Brunei

After discounting for last year Plate Cup which is not even ranked high enough to have it page on the S-league website, this was Balestier Khalsa first ever trophy and this time nobody can ignored that right.

And the Toa Poyah side deserved that as they dominated the Brunei side who were in their third Final in five years and destroyed them.

Right after skipper Paul David Cunningham got the opener in the fifteen minute, the Brunei side were never in it again as Kim Minho soon got another on the half hour mark.

In the second period, goals from Poh Yi Feng and Tengku Mushadad killed of the Brunei side hopes forever.

With that domination, who can claimed Balestier Khalsa are not worthy League Cup champions.

Balestier and DPMM Brunei reached Starhub League Cup Final

Balestier Khalsa reached their first ever Cup Final in the professional era (unless one considered last year Plate Cup was worthy of being considered a Cup) with a 1-0 win over Albirex Niigata (S) at Jurong East.

Albirex Niigata (S) who have been on a wretched run of not winning in 2 months since defeating DPMM Brunei in June showcased that as they were unable to break down a resolute Balestier defence despite home advantage.

And the Tigers took full advantage as they scored through Park Kang Jin early in the game and never looked back.

As for defending champions DPMM Brunei, there will be no lacked of that Final experience as it was their third Final in five years after they defeated Woodlands Wellington 1-0.

Hendra Azam got the winner.

In the Plate Cup Final, Harimau Muda won their first trophy after they defeated Courts Young Lions 2-0 at Jalan Besar.

Syazwan Tajudin and Asri Mardzuki got the goals for the Malaysian side.

Rams far better at the spot

Woodlands Wellington reached the semi-final of the Starhub League Cup as they showed they were far better at  the spot than Geylang International.

DPMM stage remarkable comeback to reach semi

DPMM show why they are League Cup champions as they defended their trophy with an amazing 5-2 victory against Tanjong Pagar who took a two-goal lead into the break thanks to Hafiz Nor and Monsef Zerka.

Surely few will give DPMM much chance that first half display but two minutes after halftime, DPMM pulled one thanks to Joao Moreira and the Portuguese striker then turned provider in the 55th minute when he broke free down the middle and played the ball through to Arturas Rimkevicius, who stabbed his effort past the line.

Having seen their comfortable lead vanish before their very eyes, Tanjong Pagar then had an excellent chance to edge ahead once more three minutes after the hour mark when they were awarded a penalty after Ahmad Latiff had been felled by Tales dos Santos inside the area, only for Zerka to screw his shot wide.

And they were made to pay for that miss as Moreira got his second to put the visitors 3-2 ahead, before Rimkevicius grabbed a second of his own to ensure it was DPMM who had a two-goal lead this time.

Moreira then got his hat-trick to put his side 5-2 up.

Tanjong Pagar United

Tampines fail to get revenge in Starhub League Cup

Tampines Rovers lost again to Balestier Khalsa, this time in the spotkick, after they drew their match 3-3.

The Tigers open the scoring in the quarter-final at the Toa Payoh Stadium after a left-wing cross from Qiu Li was inexplicably headed by Ismadi Mukhtar into his own net.

However, it did not last long with the visitors equalising six minutes later when Shahdan Sulaiman's freekick was deflected into the path of Aleksandar Duric, who made no mistake in smashing a volley home from six yards out, but Balester reclaimed the lead again when Kim Min-ho skipped past a challenge on the edge of the box and smashed a left-footed strike past Ridhuan Barudin.

Tampines pulled level once more in the second period when debutant Ruzaini Zainal, who came on for Ismadi just before the break, tore down the right and whipped in a cross that was swept home by Khairul Amri, and they took the lead when Jaslee Hatta, in a bid to prevent Shahdan's neat pass from reaching Jamil Ali, could only stab the ball into his own net.

But with nine minutes remaining, Zulkiffli Hassim did brilliantly to create space for himself on the edge of the area with a sharp turn and fired his shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-3 and send the game into extra time.

With neither side able to find a fourth goal in extra-time it went to penalties where Balestier won 4-3.

Albirex get revenge in Starhub League Cup

Albirex Niigata (S) reach the Starhub League Cup semi-final as they gained revenge against Home United.

The Protectors had earlier in May knocked out the White Swans in the Singapore Cup and now the Japanese had done the same to them in the League Cup.

Ismail Yunos gave the Protectors the lead in the first half and it appeared to be enough as the clock wined down before Shingo Suzuki scored from the spot with 10 minutes to go.

There was no separating them after that even in extra-time so it went to spot kick and Albirex won it 7-6 as Home scorer Ismail missed his kick.

Home United

Starhub League Cup to include NFL

axrosstheline have reported the 2013 Starhub League Cup will include a National Football League club for the first time ever.

The top two teams from the 2012 NFL Division 1 and 2 will have to participate in a qualifying round in May this year, with the winner of the playoffs being granted a spot in the StarHub League Cup proper. On top of gaining qualification, the winning team from the four-team play-off will also stand to gain a cash prize of SGD$2,000.

The FAS have labeled the initiative as the “Progression Plan” as they aim to introduce new initiatives to the NFL.

Come 2014, the winner of the 2013 Singapore Pools FA Cup will also stand a chance to be involved in one of the prestigious knock out competition of Singapore football. The winner of NFL Division 1 will take the second slot available for the play-off.

Should the FA Cup winner be a Prime League team, only the NFL Division 1 Champion qualifies for the League Cup qualification round in 2014.

However there will be a odd number of teams in the Starhub league Cup so the competition will likely see a change in format again from last year when it had a group stage before proceeding to the knockout stage for both the league Cup and Plate Cup (The cup for those who do not make it in the league Cup).

Tampines change coach after League Cup exit

Champions Tampines Rovers has move to change their coach after their defeat in the Starhub League Cup to Geylang United.

Technical director Tay Peng Kee has been apppinted as the new coach replacing Steven Tan.

The reason is chairman Teo Hock Seng believe the team needed a new direction as he feel they are slacking off again and returning back to where they were eariler in the season.

The Stags are fighting for the S-league again after going on a 6-match winning streak w hen earlier in the season they were struggling to compete.

Teo has been impressed by Tay as he was able to help Ahmad Latiff pass his Beep Test when all the other staff, including head coach Steven Tan, failed.

So Teo think Tay is the man to bring the team back on track.

Steven Tan will go back to coaching the Prime League Team.

DPMM Brunei have became the first team to win the League Cup twice as they lift the 2012 Starhub League Cup

The Brunei side last won the League Cup back in 2009 in their debut year in the S-league.

Shahrazen Said and Azwan Saleh got the goals that gave the Brunei side victory over Geylang United.

For the Eagles, this mark another disappointment to their season if which they are languishing in last place in the league.

However, they hoped the ability to reach a Final will spur them on in the league and enable themselves to lift themselves out of bottom place in the coming months.

As for this is also the Brunei side second honour in the Singapore football scene.

Geylang down Tampines in derby to reach final

Geylang United defeat Tampines Rovers 2-0 for the first time this year to reach the Starhub League Cup final.

This is the Bedok side first final in 3year since they reached he RHB Singapore Cup in 2009 when they won it.

The Eagles must be hoping for a repeat of such a scenario as they endure a difficult 2012 season thus far.

The Eagles took the lead through Jozef Kaplan and double the lead thanks to Stefan Milojevic before the end.
