Sketching Lake of Bays

I've been going up to the cottage for Thanksgiving since 2004
and started sketching the view in 2008.
Fun to see the different colours and sketches of the same view from various years.

Journaling in the Muskokas

Last weekend while up in the Muskokas at Lake of Bays...

...I sat in 26C hot sun and did some journaling in my sketchpad.

Then I switched to my larger sketchpad to draw the same view.

A beautiful spot that inspires drawing for sure.

Journaling in New England

I didn't get very much time to add to my sketching journal on this busy vacation, but I did manage one fast sketch of the rocky shoreline of Camden.

Then onto Newton, Mass. where we found Taste Coffee House. A great place to wait for the train into Boston and sketch...

...and drink lattes. I told Richard it was the best cup of coffee I'd ever had in my life.

And I wasn't kidding. Not bitter. Tasted like dark chocolate. Happy I immortalized it in my sketchpad.

Dragonfruit Inspiration

A pleasant discovery at the local grocery store. After reading in Natalie's blog post about dragonfruit...

...I decided to give it a try as well.

Really yummy. Very refreshing, tasting a little like kiwi fruit.

But before we cut it in half and ate it, I had to draw it, right?

Veggies and Five Cats

I found an old journal with some sketches in it.

A few drawings of Richard's sweet potato squash he grew that year.

This was when I had five cats. Seems so empty in the house now with only three!

Deer Mouse Study

No better chance to draw a deer mouse than when you find a dead one on your floor, right?

Sketches in Tennessee

We actually had a bit of down time on our trip to Tennessee last week, so I painted a few of the new birds I saw.

Jane's dog Nila is a sweet thing so I tried painting her. She sort of, almost posed for me at one point. Sweet!

Most of our lounging and resting was done by the pool, so I figured I'd sketch that too. 80-85F most days, warm sun in late Sept/early Oct. What can be bad?

Watercolour View

I love sketching en plein air.

And with a view like this, how can you go wrong?

Sketching Florida

I wonder why I generally only sketch my surroundings when I'm on vacation.

Florida was mighty windy in November with Hurricane Ida blowing through. You kind of get that idea from this drawing. Fun to look back at what I've doodled...

Dreaming About the Bahamas

Its FREEZING here so I was thinking about the gorgeous, hot weather that Richard and I enjoyed in the Bahamas last November.

The square we sat in had the most magnificent and odd tree. Have you ever seen such a thing?

I tried drawing it but I don't think I did it justice.

One of my favourite moments on our visit was sitting on the cement pier that ran to the beach and drawing the sea.

The turquoise of my watercolours doesn't even come close to how blue that water was. Ahhh. I wanna go back!

Drawing in the Muskokas

On our visit to the Muskokas for Thanksgiving last weekend, I sketched a bouquet of orange-coloured chrysanthemums that were on the table inside.

Outside, I drew the beautiful scenery.

A small row boat came into view as I was drawing.

While I was sketching, Richard took this shot.

Nature Journaling

Some of my sketches of recent visitors out my window.

Initially I thought it was a flying squirrel perched near the feeder until I cast my desk lamp out the window. Now that was a surprise!

Gorgeous Autumn Weekend

Just back from a fantastic weekend in the Muskokas. Gorgeous leaves, weather about 20C, bright sun, shimmering lake...

...and a perfect spot to curl up after a big helping of Thanksgiving turkey and all the fixings.

Muskoka Impressions #3

A few other things that I sketched while on vacation. There were acorns all over the stairs and deck to the water, courtesy of a large oak tree and some busy chipmunks.

Some nice-sized twigs were lying on the ground, probably knocked down by an eager chippy or two.

A fantastic, water-worn stump, was sitting on the edge of the dock. I think it could've been drawn a few more times from various angles. Pretty neat.

Muskoka Impressions #2

One of my favourite photos from our week in the Muskokas. Here's 14-year-old Angus, a sweet little Westie, checking out one of the Mottled Ducks that hung out with us by the dock.

I tried sketching Angus and although these drawing aren't the perfect portrait of him, I like their looseness.

Richard snapped this of me while I was sketching the late-blooming delphinium.

My watercolours weren't as bright and vibrant as the real thing.

I swam with the ducks! They were curious about me and I tried quacking to get them closer but this was about as close as they dared.

Quick duck sketches. Mottled Ducks are related to the American Black Duck but lighter. Their feathers were really interesting up close.

I found these large duck feathers on the lawn on way to the dock. Fun to paint.
