Talk about playing catch up: all the way back in February, I spent an unseasonably mild afternoon in jewelry designer Erin Considine's sun-washed little studio snapping photos for a feature in Got a Girl Crush Magazine. Fast forward several months and countless hours of hard work on the part of founders and editors Meg Wachter and Andrea Cheng, and GAGC Issue #2 is now hot off the presses.
You can preview the issue here and pick up your very own copy right here. And for any New York buddies, Got a Girl Crush is hosting their issue #2 launch party on August 30th. Check here for more info, and hope to see ya there!
I took part in a really fun feature in the latest issue of N.E.E.T. Magazine that just came out a couple days ago. It's all about my ideal vacation spot, which right now is Santorini, the Greek Island where Summer Lovers was filmed (I wont rest until every last one of you has seen that movie, for serious!) Man, I really wish I could wear that imaginary outfit tomorrow...
I also have a piece in the latest issue of BUST about Rachel Becker and the badass guitar straps she makes for her label Heavy Leather NYC. I'll try and get a decent scan soon!
A piece of mine in the October/November issue of BUST Magazine, about Sheena Matheiken and the Uniform Project. I'm so glad to see that phase two of the Project is going so well! So far they've chosen really amazing girls to participate, and raised a good deal of money for some really worthwhile causes.
On a side note, I've added a link on the sidebar to my new online Portfolio. It's kinda a work in progress (in so many ways!) but so far I've got most of my published pieces and styling work up. Have a look--and feel free to pass it on to anyone who you think might benefit from my services ;n )
I've been hearing rumblings that the August/September issue of BUST has been officially unleashed on the world, so I think it's safe for me to finally unveil something I've been excited about for many weeks now.
Back in June, I was invited, along with Elizabeth, Jenny and Angel, to be one of four amazing, blogging ladies to be featured in a special Fall fashion preview. When Lisa, one of the editors, suggested we wear a favorite local or indie designer of ours, I immediately thought of my friend Caycee Black and her sweet, eponymous line. I ended up wearing one of her gorgeous heavy knit sweaters, along with some odds and ends from my closet. We were also asked to make up a little wishlist for fall--sadly, my crappy scan totally obliterated the American Apparel sweater down in the corner, but that means you'll just have to check it out for yourself in print!
Endless thanks goes out to Lisa (who has an amazing blog of her own) and everyone else at BUST for being so amazing and sweet and badass! And for treating me so dang good, seriously, whatever I did to deserve this, it must have been pretty awesome...
Of all the pieces I've had published here and there so far, this is easily the one I'm most proud of. It all started last fall with an email from a girl named Elizabeth Doan in Australia who thought I might like this brand spankin' new swimwear line called We Are Handsome, which lead to a blog post or two, which lead to a pitch and now--fast forward a few months, dozens of emails, a Skype conversation to the other side of the world, some early morning trips to Bed Stuy, a photoshoot (on medium format film!) in Brighton Beach on a frigid spring afternoon--my article is leading the Style section in FADER Magazine #68!
Thanks so much to Jeremy for taking the time to talk on the internet with me, and for the motivational life tips imparted to me in a wine bar atop the Time Warner Building. I'm still working on taking them all to heart. Baby steps.
I recently had the honor of being the latest in a fine line of bloggers to complete Style Symmetry's Symmetry Seven. I'm mighty honored, and it was a lot of fun. Thanks Eyeliah!
Woo woo!! Ok, so, a couple of weeks ago I started an internship at FADER Magazine. My first piece for the Style section's blog went up today, and it just happens to be about another one of my all-time favorite blogs: Backyard Bill. Hopefully my byline will be popping up over there more frequently in the future, so keep your eyeballs peeled.
Shameless self-promotion aside, the FADER Style blog happens to totally rule. My favorite feature might be Itemized, but Thrintage is a close contender. I hear that the girl who writes it can't contribute so often anymore because she's in a band...but maybe that's just as well, since almost all the amazing thrift store she visits are in Cali-frickin'-fornia. Guuuuuuuuh.
Two nights ago my friend Jacky called me at 1:30am to tell me that she had just opened her copy of the Village Voice to find this hilariously accurate illustration of the Pains (by Marc Burckhardt) gracing the front page of their Fall Arts Guide. She was right, this shit is TOO GOOD. My scanner wasn't big enough to capture the full glory, but you get the idea.
Alex is pictured in his favorite burgundy cashmere v-neck sweater and, of course, Peggy's bangs are immaculate.
Remember when I told you guys I had something exciting in the works with BUST? Well, here 'tis! For the current August/September issue (featuring Diablo Cody on the cover) I had the immense privilege of meeting and interviewing Alison Lewis, whose new line Lewis is sorta blowing up (and for good reason, I got to attend her trunk sale and fondle everything and I gots to say it is all 1000% gorgeous. For serious.)
Alison is in fact the cutest thing ever created, and she even invited me back over for the photoshoot, which took place in her adorable little apartment (though I ended up being late and pretty much missing the whole thing, pooo) where I got to squeeze in a sweaty hand shake (mine not hers) with Sarah Sophie Flicker, who didn't even seem to mind that I couldn't stop staring at her (so tall! So tiny! Such long hair! SO PREEETTTYYY!)
Anyways, the result? A whole frickin' page in the magazine, half covered with text written by yours truly.
Holy. Crap! You guys. Excited doesn't even begin to cover it...
My latest little piece in the June/July issue of BUST Magazine! Click to make it nice 'n readable, see the rest here :n )
I'm super excited about what I'm working on for them at the moment. Stay tuned, chickies! (Balls, did I just call you guys chickies? I'm so sorry, it's been a loooong day...)
A few days ago, my Best Boy and his band mates took off for a three week tour of the UK (Best Boy plays bass). While I will sorely miss him, I'm ridiculously proud, and also excited that simultaneously Pitchfork has premiered the music video for one of the songs on their 7", featuring none other than keyboard player Peggy Wang herself, and shot on Super8 (a medium close to my heart!)
Here is a sub-par (sorry! Best I can do till I'm back in NYC with all the proper gadgets, bells and whistles) scan of my article on page 36 of the new Aug/Sept issue of BUST magazine, which is, dare I say, possibly one of my favorite issues to date. I submit for your consideration: a feature article on Little Edie Beale, complete with a sumptuous collection of family photos; a "Twin Peaks" (!!!) themed fashion spread; and a Wardrobe_Remix inspired pictorial featuring a couple of my favorite bloggers, Sally Jane and The Snail and the Cyclops. Hooray BUST!
Hey wait a minute, who's that scrappy lookin' girl in the bottom row, feeling a trifle bit uncomfortable being hemmed in from every side by all the cool girls (shades of 10th grade Tolo all over again!) Oh golly, it's me! That's right, I'm a Myspace Muse over at WhoWhatWearDaily, which is totally awesome, if a bit archaic (Myspace? Reeeeaaalllyyy? I kid, I kid...) I am looking fully forward to being torn apart in various unexpected ways...hey, at least I'm doing better than Valerie so far, whose hat has already received several death threats...
All joking aside, thanks WhoWhatWear, it is, indeed, an honor of Homeric proportions. Now someone, go invoke me!
Now that Beth's had her launch party, which sounded like quite a success, I just wanted to post my "traveling shirt" photo. You guys have probably already seen it, yeah yeah, but hey, I'm still excited! Of course, if I had to do it again I would probably style it completely differently, hindsight being 20/20 and all...but I do indeed think it speaks to my...colorful aesthetic, heh. And it shows off my sweet yellow walls! Anyways, I know I've said it a billion times, but thanks again Beth :n )
As some of you may remember, several weeks ago the illustrious Beth Jones, the über-stylish force behind The Vintage Society, invited me to take part in this awesome project. Well, the project has now come to full fruition, and Beth is celebrating the launch of her new website today, Saturday the 21st, with a party at SiteLA. I wish upon wish I could attend, but as I am stuck on the other side of the country, it's up to you, my friends, to live the dream for me. Check out her blog for the deets, as well as photos of myself and several other amazing ladies from around the globe in our Quiksilver stripey shirt!
Here's the second article I have in the current issue of BUST. Not exactly my area of expertise, (thankfully, knock on wood, etc...) but I think it's a pretty cool system, and INSPOT is doing some awesome work. Also, I just realized it is on page 111, and made a wish!
As an astute anonoymous commenter recently pointed out, my dear friend Cassie and I, of Sweeetheart Fever fame, recently made an appearance on Style Sightings. Spot our hammy faces if you dare!
