Tuesday's Tales, Meet Oscar!

Hiya buddies!

This week we'd love for you to meet Oscar! This fellow is a real sweet heart (and may we add, a party animal)!

Just look at those eyes! Oscar is pretty articulate, so we're going to quote him from his Petfinder.com page:
"My volunteer friends call me a "lap dog" and a big "teddy bear." As you can see from my pictures, my favorite place is with you! I like to be near you, giving kisses and snuggling.

"I also like to take walks, and I walk pretty nice. Sometimes if I smell something I like I'll pull, but I mostly trot along and listen very good when you direct me. I will sit for treats and take them very gently and I will share my toys and food with you with my big smile. When I met another doggie during my evaluation, I gave him kisses. I like to jump and play with other doggies!"

Wow! It's hard to believe this cutie is still waiting for his forever family to come and get him!

Oscar is currently at the Newark Humane Society, at 124 Evergreen Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. When inquiring remember to have Oscar's identification number (131950) handy. The shelter is open 7 days a week from 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM. For directions please call 973-824-7080.

Meet Mocha, this Week's Tuesday's Tale!

Hi buddies!

This week we'd love for you to meet sweet Mocha!

Mocha is a beautiful young Pit/Lab mix. The description on her Petfinder.com page says that she's full of energy and will make a great jogging partner. She's very friendly and has a great disposition. Mocha is in great condition and is a new arrival at the Newark Humane Society's shelter. She is very good on her leash and was easy to walk. No soft toys for her 'though, as they will be history, a good nylon bone would be better! Good food test, And she releases the raw hide when asked.
The shelter recommends a "one dog family" for her, as she is reported not to be good with other dogs.

Just look at that happy face! What a wonderful picture (and what a difference it makes too)!

Mocha is currently at the Newark Humane Society, in Newark, New Jersey.  And with each adoption, the Society will present a DVD on TRAINING YOUR DOG or YOUR ADOPTED CAT at no charge. The dog video will include problems with chewing, jumping, mouthing, etc., but who trains a cat, BOL? Tuesday's Tails, Meet Bosco & Rosco!

Hi buddies!

This week we'd love for you to meet Bosco and Rosco! Just look at these faces!

Here's their story from their Petfinder.com page:
"Bosco (more white faced) and his brother Rosco (short tail) are two very tight knit, 18 month old brothers. Their love for one another is unmeasurable. They do everything together and so it was only fitting their evaluation be as one. These two are a duo. Together they walk well on the lead. Apart they get upset and cry.
"Both Bosco and Rosco are very gentle and loving. They enjoy toys and share them well. Both have no issues being handled head to tails even while they eat. Bosco and Rosco are good with people and other dogs. They love to go for walks and to just hang out. They are a beautiful pair of Old English bulldogs (Eng. Bulldog/pit cross). They would make any bully lover happy and proud. These are beautiful dogs with big hearts!"

*sigh*

These fellows are currently at the Newark Humane Society, in Newark, New Jersey.  And with each adoption, the Society will present a DVD on TRAINING YOUR DOG or YOUR ADOPTED CAT at no charge. The dog video will include problems with chewing, jumping, mouthing, etc., but who trains a cat, BOL?
There are $300 worth of free coupons offered with the dog video and $100 in free coupons for each cat adopter. It's a win - win buddies!
All my paws are crossed for these two! Hoping that they find their forever home, together soon!

Tuesday's Tails!

Hi buddies!
If you haven't heard about it yet, June is "Adopt a Shelter Cat Month"! So this week, we'd like to introduce you to a couple of cool cats that are looking for their forever homes at the Newark Humane Society, in Newark, New Jersey.

Please say hello to Lucy!

Lucy is a little over a year old, and has spent most of her life at the shelter. She's a gentle sweetie that loves to play & get pets!

Next, please meet Onyx!

*psst: This gal looks a lot like my furbrother Wren!*
Onyx is another playful kitty that has spent way too much time at the shelter. They say she's very vocal too, she'll be sure to let you know when she wants your attention!

Breaking news! During Adopt-A-Cat Month, cat and kitten adoption fees will be reduced from $75 to $50. Two cats or two kittens can be adopted together for the special reduced rate of $75. All cats and kittens will be micro-chipped free of charge. If the cat has not been altered, there is an additional low-cost fee of $35 or with the adoption of two cats, the altering fee is $60 for both.

As a thank you to those who already have brought cats into their lives, owners may bring their cats into our Animal Care Center and have them fitted with a Home Again microchip for only $20. Anyone adopting a cat or kitten or bringing in their own pets for micro-chipping will also receive a free family pass to Popcorn Park in Forked River, NJ!

The above offer is only for the month of June. The adoption fee includes cardboard cat carrier, collar, i.d. tag and vaccinations. With each adoption, the Society will present a DVD on TRAINING YOUR DOG OR YOUR ADOPTED CAT at no charge. The dog video will include problems with chewing, jumping, mouthing, etc., but who trains a cat, BOL? There are $300 worth of free coupons offered with the dog video and $100 in free coupons for each cat adopter. It's a win - win buddies!

One of the reasons many cats are surrendered to shelters is that they have a need to scratch. Some people see this behavior as destructive and give them up to a shelter or will resort to having them declawed, which is a terrible thing to do to any creature!
While mom was at BlogPaws, she spent a lot of time in the Cat Style Lounge, checking out all the cool new merchandise for kitties! Our cats really love their cardboard scratchers. They go through them, well, like cardboard BOL! She was very impressed with the PetFusion line of scratchers. So just last week she ordered one online when she saw there was a sale.
It should arrive soon, but in the meantime, the nice people from PetFusion got in touch with the visitors to the Cat Style Lounge to offer a 10% discount on their 3 new products: the Reversible Curve, 3 Sided Vertical, and Jumbo Scratcher Lounge.

Just visit their Amazon shop here, then when you've finished shopping, enter the promo code newpet10. The code is good through June 15th, 2014. These scratchers are made of recycled and recyclable corrugated cardboard and non-toxic corn starch glue. Their durable construction and dense cardboard promises to last longer than other scratchers.

So, just to let you know, we weren't paid or given any compensation for writing about the PetFusion scratchers. We just want to share the price break if anyone is interested in purchasing one for their home. We'll be sure to let you know how this one holds up to our menagerie!

S as in ...

... knowing the Satisfaction of Saving a Shelter pet!

Still hanging in the "A to Z Blog Challenge"!
So, in keeping with the challenge, we'd like to introduce you to three cuties, whose names all start with the letter S!

Meet Sheba!

Here's what the good people at the Humane Societies in Newark, NJ have to say about sweet Sheba:
"Sheba is 2 year old domestic short hair, mostly grey with white kitty who came to the shelter as a stray on 10/10/13. She is a sweet, gentle kitty who is more interested in interacting with people than playing with toys. Sheba came right over to me and climbed into my arms when I opened her cage and called to her. She loved being held and didn't even mind all the small dogs that were barking around her. She had what she wanted my attention and my arms around her petting her."

Next, please meet Star and Stripes!

Star is a one year old domestic short hair calico, surrendered to the shelter in June, 2013.  Stripes is a three year old domestic short  hair, black and white. She was surrendered to the shelter in March, 2013. They’re both currently spending their time in the “Female Cat Room” at the Newark shelter.

Sheba, Star and Stripes, along with many other wonderful pets, are available for adoption at the Associated Humane Societies in Newark, New Jersey. All pets at the shelter are up to date on their shots and will be altered and micro-chipped once they've been adopted.
Please visit their website or give the shelter a call at 973-824-7080.

We love the wonderful photos, taken by Stacey Gammon of Stacey Gammon Pet Photography, of the adoptable dogs and cats on the Newark Humane Society's Petfinder pages, including this one of Star. As you can see, what a difference a great photograph can make!

The Society offers free DVDs with all cat and dog adoptions at no charge. $300 worth of coupons are offered to each new dog parent and $100 worth of coupons for each new cat parent too!

L and M, Looking Marvelous!

Trying to keep up with the "A to Z Blog Challenge"!
Since we're participating in the "A to Z Blog Challenge, we thought it would be nice to introduce you to a couple of cuties at the Associated Humane Societies in Newark NJ, with the initials L and M!

Here's Lala!

This is what her friends at the shelter have to say about Lala.

"Lala is a recent owner surrender. Owners couldn't keep her, she is petite with a slender body. She was so happy we took her out and her puppy energy came out from being cooped up in the kennel. But as happy and energetic she gets, she will immediately "sit" when you give her the command. She needs a family to play with in a back yard. She still is a little puppy mouthy but that is easily corrected. Cute and sweet. No resource guarding, shares her toys and good by the food bowl."

 Next, here's Mikey!

Here's the information from Mikey's Petfinder.com page:

His friends at the shelter say that Mikey is an awesome Lab "Heinz 59" mix, with a great temperament. He's only 10 months old, loves to cuddle and give you kisses. He is "so gentle and sweet". Mikey was gentle with treats and did well on his food test. He didn't show much interest in the toys there but is great with other dogs. A "really nice dog. Very adoptable. We love him."

Lala and Mikey, along with many other wonderful pets, are available for adoption at the Associated Humane Societies in Newark, New Jersey. All pets at the shelter are up to date on their shots and will be altered and micro-chipped once they've been adopted.
Please visit their website or give the shelter a call at 973-824-7080.

G as in .....

Great dogs, but a few gruesome people!

Today is National Dog Fighting Awareness Day
so we'll be including this and Tuesday's Tails Blog Hop
in the "A to Z Blog Challenge".

Dog Fighting is a illegal, but continues to be a large problem throughout the country. We can't understand how this brings pleasure to anyone. The ASPCA works hard to investigate and crack down on dog fighting rings, but we need to build awareness of the problem within our communities.
Unfortunately, the pit bull has become the face of this scourge and their reputation tarnished by irresponsible owners.

Keeping to the letter G, today we would like to introduce you to Gwen,
one of the sweetest pitties you might ever care to meet!

Here's what the Good people at the Newark Humane Society has to say about her:
"Gwen is a petite tan pit and she is a lady on the move. She was very happy to go outside and play with the toys I had. She has beautiful hazel eye's that match her tan coat. She bunks with another dog and they get along fine. Her food test was good, she is some fast eater. And I bet she would love to have a nice big yard where she could run and run and get rid of some of her energy. She takes treats nicely from your fingers. And would appreciate if someone took her to doggie school.

"... Gwen attends the Shelter hikes and everyone loves the great enthusiasm this beautiful girl has. She will make a great hiking or walking companion and friend to whom ever adopts her. She loves to go on the hikes with the volunteers and other doggies."

We love the wonderful photos, taken by Stacey Gammon of Stacey Gammon Pet Photography, of the adoptable dogs and cats on the Newark Humane Society's Petfinder pages, including this one.

Tuesday's Tails!

Hi buddies!

Today we'd love to introduce you to Apollo

Apollo has a captivating smile! Here is what the folks at the Newark Humane Society has to say about this handsome pup:

"Apollo is a young Staffie mix who was surrendered, he was a house dog and from the way he acted he was in the house most of his life and most likely is house trained. He is sweet and easy to handle, he's attended several outings and a adoption day and has been a gentleman to all, people, dogs, etc. Very well behaved at those functions. He is sweet and loves to be handled. He seemed fine with all the passing dogs, had a good food test and gently took treats from us. He's just a sweet big baby looking for a another home like he had before. He is in really good condition. Nice calm gentle boy. Great dog."

We love the wonderful photos, taken by Stacey Gammon of Stacey Gammon Pet Photography, of the adoptable dogs and cats on the Newark Humane Society's Petfinder pages, including this one!

Tuesday's Tails, Meet Asia!

Hi buddies!

Today we would like to introduce you to Asia!

Asia is a 1 year old German Shepherd mix, currently at the Newark Humane Society Shelter. According to her Petfinder page, she loves to run and jump. She loves to be petted and loved. Asia is very energetic and would love someone who can help her burn off some of her energy, perhaps a running or jogging partner?
She is always happy and has no food bowl "issues". Sadly, Asia didn't really know what toys were when she first came to the shelter, but hopefully someone can teach her how much fun they can be. She doesn't get along with other animals, so she needs to be the only pet. But with just a little training, she make someone the perfect companion!

If you're interested in learning more about Asia, please visit her Petfinder.com page or contact the Associated Humane Societies in Newark, New Jersey.

Hi buddies!

Today we would like to introduce you to Honey girl!

Just look at that sweet face!

According to her bio, "Honey is a very motivated and high energy 8 month old pointer hound mix from the south. She is still very much a puppy on lead and gets very excited to meet and greet both people and other dogs. Her previous owners showered her with love and food but forgot the training. Once she grew out of the cute little puppy stage she ended up here.
"Honey will allow and even beg for you to touch and handle every inch of her. She loves to jump on people and has a very high energy level so she will need an active family to run and play with. She is a happy and well-adjusted puppy. She loves toys and is more than happy to share them with you. She will sit for food or treats but only for a second. She is gentle with taking food and doesn'€™t mind sharing her food or its bowl. Honey is great with other dogs but her puppy energy and lack of self-control makes her better for dogs her size and energy level. Honey's favorite thing to do is get her picture taken. She will instantly calm and sit when she sees a camera pointed at her."

If you're interested in learning more about Honey, please visit her Petfinder.com page or contact the Associated Humane Societies in Newark, New Jersey.

Now for some good news! Remember sweet Ratchet from a Tuesday's Tails a few months ago?

We found out that he has found his forever family! Way to go Ratchet!

The Friends of Union Township Animal Shelter's Face Book page had the good news, but somehow mom missed it!

Here are the some of the most happy words we've read in a long time:

"Friday the 13th - Ratchet's luckiest day. 2 years, 8 months, 13 days. Unheard of in a municipal run shelter. A dog with sensitive skin, high prey drive, initially knowing absolutely nothing. He typically never would have been given a chance. Ask anyone who knew Ratchy, he was worth the chance, he still is. 2 years, 8 months, 13 days. He waited in his kennel thinking the shelter was home and the staff and volunteers were his family, and we all are.

"Today Ratchet found someone that didn't overlook the big black dog in the last kennel. Today he found someone that doesn't mind his prey drive, and will help him work past it. Today he found someone that is ready to see what his skin condition stems from, and help diminish it. Today he found someone that loves him as much as we all do - and then some. Today he found someone that saw past the big black dog, saw past the "flaws", and just fell in love. Today... Ratchy found forever!"

Thank you to the wonderful people working at the Union Township Shelter and to all the shelter volunteers!
And thank you for stopping by!
