Sparkly Joy Altered Letters

Good morning, Scrappin' Friends! I'm Wendy Coffman from Stamping Rules, and I'm here to share this glittery holiday display today. I got these cool paper mache letters which I painted with layers of grey and silver acylic paint. The front of the letters I coated with lots of silver glitter, just some standard chunky kid glitter. Then I got to work with the Mod Podge, pasting on hexagons I cut with my Cricut machine. After all the hexagons were attached and trimmed around the letters I did a final coat of Mod Podge and coated the letters with a clear chunky plastic glitter.
Here you can see the final coating of what I always call kid glitter because it's uber chunky. It adds a lot of sparkle but still let's your paper shine through! I topped off each letter with a snowflake embellishment I built out of glitter paper cricut cuts and some rhinestone brads that I've been hoarding for just this kind of special project. I finished off my bling with a sparkle flourish for each letter. I adhered the flourishes with lots of Liquid Glass, which dried clear so it didn't interfere with the sparkle of the letters. For the parts of the flourish that were not actually attached to the letters I just flipped the whole thing over and coated the sticky part of the flourish with more Liquid Glass so it wouldn't attract hair or dust. I can't wait to add these letters to my holiday mantel!

Dollar Store Make Over!

Hi everyone! Practical Scrapper Alison here sharing a fun Desk Organizer I made for my eldest daughter using a container I found at the dollar store, old tea and coffee containers and some flowers also from the dollar store.

Have you ever wandered the aisles of a dollar store and thought "hmm, that's cute. I wonder what I could make with it?" Well, I went to my local dollar store the other day specifically to do that. When I saw the hot pink container I thought I could cover it in paper and make something cute for one of my daughters. They had them in several colours so I bought 3 different ones (I have 3 daughters after all!) and then was on the hunt for something to make it pretty.
I normally would completely bypass the fake flowers but on this trip they called to me. So glad they did! Not only are they gorgeous on the finished desk organizer, they helped hide some of the ugly hot glue!! LOL! :)

Here's a quick tutorial on how I made this.

I gathered my supplies - the ones I'd purchased at the dollar store as well as some old coffee and tea containers I'd been hoarding saving for something  special. My thought was that I could attach the smaller containers to my big one ... somehow!

I knew I wanted to cover these with paper so I used a sanding block to rough it up a bit to allow the tape to adhere better.

Then I carefully measured the heights of my containers and cut a piece of Amy Tangerine paper to fit. I decided to go with yellow for this one as the inside of the pink box had a yellow pattern to it.

I covered both the tea container and the coffee tin with strips of double sided tape then carefully stuck my paper to it. Even though I'd very carefully measured, I still had to trim a bit of extra paper from the top with my craft knife. This left a rough looking edge so I went looking for a solution.

Ta-da! Washi tape to the rescue!! I also wrapped it around the top of the large container for continuity.

The bottom of the smaller containers needed some embellishment too so I found a coordinating paper and using my notebook edge punch I  added strips to the bottom. I then wrapped some twine around the very bottom (I just used more double sided tape to stick it down). As an added layer of protection I covered the two smaller tins with Modge Podge before using hot glue to attach them to the large container.

My daughter's name is Marley so I found a large glittered chipboard 'm' in my stash and used pop dots to attach it to the bin. Then it was time to embellish with the flowers and these little plastic butterflies I also found at the dollar store.

Now she's got a great little desk organizer to (hopefully) keep everything neat and tidy.

Thanks for visiting the blog today. Hope I've inspired you to scour YOUR local Dollar Store to see what you can re-purpose. Tell me in the comments what your best find has been.

-cheers!
Alison

This stacking box project is a great favor or decor for a wedding,

dressed up from a basic pink and brown cardstock and a simple
stacking box pattern by using simple techniques with twine.
(FYI--the box is just a square....vary the sizes to fit your needs,
and score at 1" to make the box sides).  And this particularly
yummy twine is from Trendy Twine--"Chocolate Cupcake"...
yep, like I said....yummy!...lol.

Here are the close ups of how I used the twine:

First, threaded thru pretty lace:

For the middle,  I used eyelets (and the holes in the punch) to lace
twine thru and then tie a bow....here's the close up of the "before":

On the top layer I simply threaded the twine thru the punch
and tied a simple bow:

Just a few simple examples of how much twine can add to a project...
it is my "go to" something, when I want to add some pizazz to any of

Christine's Top 10 Projects

It has been such a fun year for me in my papercrafting!  Before 2011 I barely made cards or altered projects, now they are a big part of my repertoire!  I've had so much fun going back and looking thru projects and trying to pick some from throughout the year.  Here's my Top 10 that I came up with!
1.  Created this one just for fun using Authentiques Glowing Line.  I loved the diamonds and they fussy cut fabulously.

2. I made this card for my little boys first day of school, it's so fun and whimsical - I love what I did with teh Momenta paper and also all the doodling.

3. I made this layout for a kit feature for Burlap & Buttercups kit club. Love the patterned paper chevrons I made.

4. I also made this card for the Burlap and Buttercups feature.

5. This was my first layout as a designer for Momenta, plus I can't resist the pictures of my little boy in his "Son of a Scrapbooker onesie :)"

6.  Made this one just for fun this fall, love that I got so many photos on it but still have some white space!

7. I made this for the Bella Blvd feature last winter here on Practical Scrappers

8. Love all the Jillibean soup goodness and the paperfolding adding dimension.

9. Made this menu board as a project for Momenta

10. A card with a fun dimensional flower made for Momenta

I did not find a common ground like Erin did, except that they are all cheery and bright projects.  Hope you've enjoyed my review, come back tomorrow to check out Kerri's Top 10!

December 2nd--Holiday Altered Tin Tart Banner

Hey guys! Aymee Gandy of 'A Scraphappy Southernbelle' here with you on this chilly day to share an altered project I have created for my holiday home. I used these little tin tart pans to create a banner for our front door. I found these tins at a local discount store for a $1 a piece! They are for use with candles, but are great for crafting projects. They come in an array of sizes, shapes, and colors. I used my scrapbooking supplies to jazz them up and ribbon to string them together to create the banner. I spelled out our last name on the pans so it would give our front door a personalized look.

"Gandy" Tin Tart Banner

Supplies Used
Patterned Paper, Stickers: Momenta
Cardstock, Ribbon: The Paper Studio
Chipboard Sticker: American Crafts
Laminator: Purple Cows Inc.
Hole Punching Tool: Crop A Dile
Circle Cutter: Creative Memories
Adhesive: Helmar

I used my Crop-A-Dile tool to punch holes in each side of the pans so that I could string them together with ribbon.
I chose these crimped alphabet stickers from Momenta to mimic the crimped edges on the pans.
I used stickers to jazz up the plain mitten chipboard stickers.
I hope you have enjoyed this project! Thanks for visiting the Practical Scrappers blog! We hope to see you again soon!

Happy Holidays!

Twine Tree

Hi everyone! This is Ann and I'm here to show you a fun and quick Christmas decor idea. Don't you love how Practical Scrappers is idea central for everything Christmas? Keep coming back everyday for more great ideas for Christmas decor, pages, cards, and so much more. Today I want to share a quick tutorial on making a cute little Christmas tree!

Here's what you'll need:
styrofoam cone
twine of various colours
bling or gems or other embellishments
quick drying strong adhesive such as Beacon's
needle

Twine1Working at the backseam, use strong quick dry adhesive to glue the end of the twine to the cone. I started at the top and worked my way down, wrapping the twine around the cone. After about an inch or so of wrapping, I switched the shade of green by snipping the end and adhering it to the backseam of the Styrofoam cone, and starting the new colour in the same way. This process is repeated throughout the height of the cone, just alternating green shades when it seems pleasing to do so.

Twine2Next, to adorn the twine wrapped tree, I made an assortment of pompoms from twine. To do this, you will need a fork. Snip a piece of twine about 2” long and set aside. Now, holding on to the end, wrap the twine around the twines of the fork. The bushiness of your pompom will vary depending on how many times you wrap the fork. Mine varied – some pompoms were 20, some were 25 and some were 30. Once you are done wrapping, snip the twine.

Twine3Grasp the piece of twine you set aside and tie it around the middle of the pompom by coming up from behind in the space between the centre tines.

Pull very tightly and tie a knot.

Then slide the pompom off the tines of the fork.

Twine4

Twine5Using sharp scissors, snip between the loops.

Twine7Then begin to poof your pompom into shape, clipping long strands.
Then thread the needle with another colour of twine and string the pompoms on the twine (like you do popcorn at Christmas!) by inserting the needle through the knotted area. Experiment with the spacing of the pompoms, and then start to wrap your pompom garland around the tree. I started by adhering an end of the garland at the bottom of the tree, and wrapped it, again adjusting the placement of the pompoms. When I was satisfied, I used the glue to adhere the pompom to the wrapped cone.

TwinetreeTo finish the tree, I adhered various sized gems to it.
I also dabbed some sparkly Stickles to the pompoms.
Lastly, I wrapped a star shaped chipboard punchout with twine and then used a coiled wire to put it at the treetop.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial today!

Altered Cookie Cutter Ornaments

Ever wanted to make something really neat for your tree (or someone elses), that is different from the usual decoration?  Well today I'm going to show you how to make altered cookie cutters that you're going  to want to cover your tree in!

Firstly you're going to need a few things:

Some shaped cookie cutters - metal or plastic - I chose a reindeer and Santa himself :)
You'll also need some patterened paper and co-ordinating ribbon, scissors, a glue gun, adhesive (I used my ATG), pen/pencil and any embellishments you like.
First up, chose your paper and with the pattern you want to see in the cookie cutter facing up.  Trace around your cookie cutter with your pen/pencil.
Using your scissors, cut around the drawn shape about 5mm away from the line.  Then snip all around the edge, from the outside edge into the line.
Once the edge is completely snipped, add adhesive over the top of all the tabs.  I used my ATG gun and just ran it around the entire outer edge.  Sit the paper on the cookie cutter (so that the lines line up with the shape) and press down all the little tabs.  The adhesive will stick to the cutter and stay put.  Do this for the entire cookie cutter.

Take a strip of ribbon and add adhesive.  Again I used my ATG gun.  Then gently line up the ribbon with the edge of the cookie cutter, and over the little tabs created from the paper and press down.  Do this for the entire cookie cutter.

Now you can embellish to your hearts content!

I used chipboard shapes that I frosted in white flocking.  I created some candy canes and added a poinsettia flower.  If you have a Crop-a-dile, you could put a hole in the top of the cutter and thread your ribbon through.  I had to hot glue mine on.

A variation on this idea is to put in a piece of acetate before putting on the backing paper.  You can then fill your cookie cutter with sweets/candy/tiny toys before gifting it.
