Using Fabric Scraps on Projects by Alison

Hi there! New Practical Scrapper Alison here with a post on how to incorporate one of the hottest trends in the paper crafting market onto your projects. Fabric! There are many types of fabric you can add to your cards and layouts - some that have been around for ages (think ribbon and lace) and some that are fairly new (fabric paper). Today I want to show you how to take ordinary pieces of cotton fabric and transform them!

First let's make some embellishments out of fabric like I did here on these two cards.

Both these flowers were made using a piece of cotton fabric and a sheet of Multipurpose Adhesive for the Big Shot. For a more thorough photo tutorial please visit my blog and look for today's post (August 16). The quick version is to take a sheet of adhesive, peel the backing off one side and stick it down to your fabric (tip: iron your fabric first to make sure it's as crease free as possible!) Use your bone folder to get out any additional creases or air bubbles. Trim off the excess fabric and then get cutting!

I used the Fun Flowers Bigz large die for the Big Shot and cut out two full set of flowers plus a couple extra large ones (maximizing my fabric!) Once you have your card base ready simply peel the backing off the die cut flowers and adhere to your card.

Like so! I added a button, some Bakers Twine and a sentiment to finish off the card.

For a slightly different look, I left the die cut flowers on the adhesive sheet backing which allowed me to curl the edges for more texture.

My second idea today is to use your fabric as if it were paper. Sound crazy? Check out my layout to see how I accomplished this.

There are literally 3 pieces of paper on this whole layout (okay, 5 if you count the photos!) - the background card stock and the two pinked circles under the rolled fabric flowers. Everything else is fabric!

The large square of brown fabric was adhered using another Multipurpose Adhesive Sheet and the smaller pieces were adhered using double sided tape. (If I had a functional sewing machine I would have sewn them to the card stock but ... I don't, so tape and glue are my friends!)

Here a close up of the layers of fabric. Oh yeah, I also wrote right onto the fabric! Easy peasy!!

Here's one of those rolled fabric flower accents I was talking about. Using a giant glue dot, a scrap of extra fabric and a pinked circle, it makes an easy and coordinating embellishment. Here's how I did it.

Start with your giant glue dot - take off the top layer of plastic to expose the glue.

Twist your fabric and place one end in the middle of the glue dot.

Keep twisting your fabric as you roll it around and around from the centre out until you are left with something that looks like this. The longer and thicker your piece of fabric the bigger and fuller your finished flower. I punched out a 2.5" circle of white card stock and used my pinking shears to pink the edges. Once it was mounted onto this I added a button and called it done!

One last way to use fabric on your layouts ... as trim to help anchor a photo.

Thanks for joining me today as we explored my second favourite thing to stock pile ... FABRIC! I'd love to see you come over to visit me on my blog too.

Friday's Fabric, Felt, and Tulle Projects

Amanda wrapped white tulle around the green frame that's surrounding the digi stamp that she created.
Lisa B used some Martha Stewart snowflake felt that she has had in her stash for a long time.

When looking through Caroline's patterned papers for her layout this week she came across one with a tailor's form. She decided to cut it out and make a skirt out of some fabric she had in her stash. She threaded some embroidery thread through the fabric, pulled it to make the waist and then finished it of with a button.

Carolina used tulle to embellish these three princess-themed mini books. You can have a peek at the inside of the books in her blog,Scrapping Nomad.

For her layout, Heidi used pre-made felt stickers, brown felt for the heart and border, green tulle, and red corduroy for the circles. She was also inspired by Pia's sketch for this week.

Thursday's Fabric, Felt, and Tulle Projects

Erin cut these cute dinosaurs from a worn pair of her son's pajammas. Since the rest of the fabric was quite stained and worn, she replicated the pattern by stamping her background cardstock to match. She also used pieces of matching felt from Fancy Pants.

For this week's project, Karen used a digi image for her main focal point on her card and accented it with pink felt embellishments she found hidden in her stash!

Pia used an old pair of jeans and cut out the pocket from them. She used a metallic frame to decorate and date the pocket. She also stuffed the pocket with things her ds loves: ice cream stick, pen and a paint brush. Pia used Cosmo Cricket pp´s and the background paper is Basic Grey "Periphery". Title in English: - This means trouble -

Lisa H used felt by Fancy Pants (flower, scallop border and word "YOU") on this layout featuring My Mind's Eye So Sophie papers. Lisa used Zip Dry Glue to adhere her felt embellishments quickly and easily.

To completely embrace this week’s challenge, Pam started with Donna Downey’s Canvas Apron. After using glimmer mist to create the background, she added a variety of fabric accents as embellishments. She used various fabric flowers by Prima, a canvas tag from Maya Roads Canvas Tag Album and the “laugh” applique from Donna Downey’s Fabric Words. As a final touch, she added some of Prima’s tulle ribbon.

Tanya used Wink Wink Ink's "Little Bird" digital stamp to make a birthday card for her daughter's friend. The digital sentiment on the inside reads "that I should wish you a happy birthday." Tanya also used two pre-made pink tulle flowers, and then made a matching white one for the triad of tulle flowers in the corner.

Wednesday's Fabric, Felt, and Tulle Projects

Kerri used felt, fabric, and tulle on her LO this week. First, she cut the scalloped square on her cricut using the Storybook cartridge, then she used her hole punch to punch a hole in the center of each scallop so she could lace the tulling through the holes. She then tied off the tulling by creating a bow in the top left corner. Also, she used fabric to create the fabric rose in center of the bow. And last, she used some stitched felt embellishments around her photo by Chatter B.O.X.

Beth "Swung" into the Felt and Fabric challenge by pulling out a couple of cute felt "Woolies" critters by Basic Grey from their Green at Heart collection of embellishments. Then she used the Plantin Schoolbook cartridge to cut a scallop border from white felt that she added to the photo mat. She finished the project by adding the "Swing" title that she cut using the Don Juan cartridge.

Jamie layered felt flowers on her card.

For her layout, Jessica created tulle flowers with button and bling centers; re-used a canvas tag from her daughter's jeans, and used fabric Thickers for part of her title.

Barb S made a cardstock template with her Cricut machine and Life is a Beach cartridge. She then traced the images onto Presto Felt (sticky back felt), cut them by hand and layered the pieces together to make fun palm tree embellishments for her "Day at the Beach" layout.

Angi made a gift bag for a baby shower. She cut the giraffe, the tag, and the "for you" sentiment using the "New Arrival" Cricut cartridge. She accented the bag with K & Company Wood Die flowers and topped them with yellow buttons. To finish off the bag, Angi added brown tulle, yellow ribbon, brown gingham ribbon, and a "smile" tag.

Tuesday's Fabric, Felt, and Tulle Projects

Christine used felt letters from Making Memories for her title.

Sara used a variety of felt on her layout. The felt half circles are from Close To My Heart.

Lisa S. pieced together a felt pear to embellish her note card.

Sue used fabric as the photo mat for the large photo. The title tag is fabric. The red heart and red flower are felt.

Robin used tulle to create the safety rope with buoy's along the bottom of the photos.

Sandra layered the retired Sweet Pea Stitched Felt flowers to make this card.

Monday's Felt, Fabric, or Tulle Projects

Kim used the Pup in a Boot image from our sponsor, Wink, Wink Ink. She used the one that is pre-colored. Her flower is about 30 layers of tulle cut with her smallest scalloped circle nesties. She also added just a touch of purple ink to the tulle.

Corinna used tulle rose ribbon from American Crafts' new Dear Lizzy line.

Sasya used three black felt flowers ("Fiesta Felt" from Buttons Galore) to decorate her layout.

Barb used some felt flowers from a Martha Stewart hair accessories kit. She added some paper flowers, glitter, and buttons to dress them up. She also used some flower tirm as the border around her circle. The ruffle is fabric embroidered with butterflies which was topped off with a piece of felt ric-rac.

Denise used a satin-like fabric to make these elegant white flowers. She then adhered a large pink rhinestone to the center.

Deanne used a pink lei she had in her stash for years. She altered the original "flower" shape by cutting them into smaller circles. Because they are an acrylic fabric, they can be "melted" with a heat embossing gun to give it texture and shape. The end result are held together with pearl brads.
