Dog Eared Book Review: The Art of Racing in the Rain
HM's review:
What can I say? This book was FANTASTIC!!
Heart warming, heart wrenching, tragic and triumphant! It keeps you rooting for Enzo and his human Denny as they go through trials and tribulations in their life. Sweet Enzo, who believes he'll be reincarnated as a man, is steady preparing himself, watching his human closely, taking in all aspects of his life so he too can be a good man.
We watch through Enzo's eyes Denny's life, testing him, as a race car driver, husband and father through the trying times that test his mettle. Enzo watching, wanting to help, but feeling trapped in his dog body that lacks human communication. But he finds a way to comfort, listen and be a source of strength for his humans when needed.
Metaphors on driving as they relate to life flood the pages and fill you with emotion as the story unravels. It inevitably makes you think of your own dog and what fills their mind as you go through your daily grind. What would they share with you?
I highly recommend this book to add to your collection. Garth Stein writes so fluidly and creates characters worth remembering.

What Dogs Teach Us
My human mom is reading a great book (Woman’s Best Friend, stories about women and the dogs in their lives), and she wanted to share something from it to all of you. This excerpt is part of the introduction, by Pam Houston.
Her Irish Wolfhound Dante battled and subsequently died of bone cancer…this is what she wrote about the lessons he taught her:
“Dante taught me that if your paws are too big to fit in your ears, you have to get someone else to do the scratching….He taught me that if you really love somebody, cleaning their bodily excretions off the carpet is no problem, and in the end, the money doesn’t really matter a bit. He taught me that loving, in the face of inevitable loss, is the single most important challenge of our lives; that without loss, life isn’t worth a hill of beans, and without love, life is nothing more than a series of losses. He taught me that everything is forgivable, that every moment contains eternity, and that loving unconditionally doesn’t mean you are a self-annihilating fool.So always hug your pups and your loved ones and always tell them you love them. Even when it feels like they may challenge your love!
After he died, he taught me how to live without him, but also that I didn’t have to. He taught me that because we loved each other so completely, a part of him would always be with me.”

Dog Eared Book Review: Walking in Circles Before Lying Down
Walking in Circles Before Lying Down by Merrill Markoe is an irreverent, funny novel that will have you wishing the story never end.
In it, we meet Dawn, who finds herself leaving another failed marriage and moving in with her sister, who in turn becomes her Life Coach. Through all this, you meet her dysfunctional parents, a new boyfriend who enjoys living life "off the grid" as she tries to navigate her way through her new life.
Along the way she adopts a Pit Bull mix named Chuck, finds a job working with dogs, at a vet clinic and through pet sitting and wakes up one morning only to discover herself talking to Chuck...and Chuck talking back.
What Chuck has to say is brutally honest. He has opinions on her boyfriend, job, and gives her insight into the things dogs do. Not only does she hear what Chuck has to say, but all the dogs she works with and sits for are all talking back. As her life gets more tumultuous, she decides to listen to Chucks instincts and see where they lead her.
I highly recommend this book! It's so engaging you'll have it read in no time!

Dog Eared Book Review: From Bagdad, With Love
From Baghdad, With Love: A Marine, the War, and a Dog Named Lava by Lt. Col. Jay Kopelman & Melinda Roth.
If you are looking for a great summer read, this is the book for you! The story of US Marine Lt. Col. Jay Kopelman's quest to save the little puppy his unit, the Lava Dogs find in war torn Fallujah is heart warming and nerve wracking all at the same time. Dealing with the realities of war, then having a stray puppy win his heart, Kopelman contacts everyone he can think of to help him get the puppy, they named Lava, out of the country and safely to the US.
With help from a variety of sources, including reporters, execs at Iams and a Kennel owner specializing in military trained dogs, the race is on to get Lava off base, seen by a vet for his vaccinations, looked after safely when he's deployed out of Fallujah.
It is an inside look at one Marines experience with war and how saving a puppy helps bring purpose to his mission. The reality is grim for most strays the Marines come across in Iraq and something connects Lava and Kopelman—he just can't let the unthinkable happen.

Dog Eared Book Review: Dreaming in Libro: How a good dog tamed a bad woman by Louise Bernikow
Excerpt from Dreaming in Libro:
“Libro freed me from whatever shadows of history stalked my own footsteps. With him by my side, I explored the neighborhood and the city, day or night, as I had never dared do before.”
From the time she looked into the large amber eyes of Libro, there was an unexplainable connection. This touching memoir covers life, love and adventure with an orphaned brindled Boxer. Bernikow, who had never owned a pet in her life, rescues this abandoned puppy on a whim and embarks on a new journey. Dreaming in Libro is a poignant story not often written about: the love and bond that develops between woman and dog.
With the beautiful backdrop of New York City to their summer in the Hamptons and book tours in between, Dreaming in Libro is a must read. So beautifully written, it draws the reader in as if they are the one embarking on the adventure of being owned by a dog. She has written the story we all want to write. One of love, friendship, laughter and tears. “How a good dog tames a bad woman.”
