Ferocactus Herrerae common name is Fishhook Barrel Cactus also called Twisted Barrel
Cactus. It is native to the southern US and northern
Mexico, where it grows in dry, sandy or rocky areas. There are three species in Arizona. It is Barrel shaped cactus
that is heavily armed with hooked spines. The Ferocactus herrerae has red, red-orange flower with yellow
mid-stripes blooms in summer. The fruit is edible and in the past. The seeds are black and have been used to
make flour.
