While we found some human painted treasures on the beach, we also found some natural ones.

Man Against the Sea

Remnants of a sea wall on the west side of Whidbey Island. A developer thought houses could be built here but the Salish Sea won out. The San Juan Islands are on the horizon.

Olympic Peninsula: La Push

La Push is a Quileute Indian village at the south side of the mouth of the Quillayute River.
To the south is First Beach, a mile long crescent and part of the 57 miles of coastline along the Olympic Peninsula.

Windjammer Park Storm Damage

A high tide and 60 mph southerly winds early on March 10 left their marks on Windjammer Park in Oak Harbor.

Oak Harbor Beach Erosion

Recent very high tides and southerly winds have eroded the beach at Windjammer Park on Oak Harbor Bay. All the supports for the wind breaks used to be on solid ground. Now the southern most ones are surrounded by driftwood.

Winter Wind Storm

West winds of 35 mph created great waves at Sunset Beach yesterday. Sea foam on my clothes, sand in my eyes and mouth, what more could a native Whidbey Islander want?
Stormy days like yesterday show why the attempt to make waterfront lots on this part of the beach did not work. All that remains are broken pieces of concrete.

A Rock Like No Other

"Different from all the rocks on the beach..." (Tracy Chevalier, Remarkable Creatures) I was at Sunset Beach on the west side of Whidbey Island.

Ebey's Landing

Yesterday's brisk wind created crashing waves and enough humidity in the air that the Olympic Mountains were hazey.

Sea Snails and Eggs

We were near the Mukilteo ferry landing during a recent low tide and saw these sea snails and their eggs. Fortunately, we had a zoologist in our group as I had no idea what they were. I'm a Whidbey Island native and have spent hours on the beach but I do think these were the first sea snail eggs I'd ever seen.

Whidbey Island Sunset

I caught the sunset last night from "Sunset Beach," the beach next to Joseph Whidbey State Park on the west side of Whidbey Island.
The clouds were putting on a show to the south, over the Olympic Moun- tains.

This was the scene when I arrived at the beach few minutes before sunset.

Olympic Mountains

A recent view of the Olympic Mountains from Sunset Beach, a beach on the west side of Whidbey Island at the northern end.  Due to the cool spring, the mountains have more of their winter snow than usual at this time of the year.

Eagle and Heron on the Beach

I was out to the beach early and saw several birds looking for their breakfast.  This eagle did not stay put very long.
I saw one heron nearby.
And then I saw the rest of them down the beach.  At the time I took this photo, I did not even see the eagle on the rocks (center bottom).  He was the one flying by in the first photo.

Olympic Mountains View

The beach near Joseph Whidbey State Park offers a grand view of the Olympic Mountains, even when they are shrouded in clouds.

Libbey Beach Bluff

When the weather is gray, what does a photographer do?

Head to the beach and try a study in lines and shapes!

These images are of the bluff at Libbey Beach, an Island Country Park.
