West Wind

A strong west wind this morning causing waves on the west side of Whidbey Island.

Seagulls were having a wonderful time soaring.

I was out at Sunset Beach on the west side of Whidbey Island to see the sunset and was surprised at the wind. It was from the north, strong and cold.

Whidbey Islanders love a wind storm.

Every beach I went to on the west side of the island was packed with cars and people braving the sea foam.

Could it be that our weather is usually mild and rather boring?

The waves were pretty big this morning on the west side of Whidbey Island, sheltered from Pacific storms by Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula.

Catching the waves at the aptly named Sunset Beach on Whidbey Island November 3. The waves crash against the remnants of old bulkheads. The Olympic Mountains are on the horizon.

Winter Wind Storm

West winds of 35 mph created great waves at Sunset Beach yesterday. Sea foam on my clothes, sand in my eyes and mouth, what more could a native Whidbey Islander want?

Stormy days like yesterday show why the attempt to make waterfront lots on this part of the beach did not work. All that remains are broken pieces of concrete.

Man Against Nature

A developer built a bulkhead along the southern end of Sunset Beach decades ago with the aim of selling waterfront lots.

These photos from yesterday show why the project did not succeed. The remnants are a favorite site for graffiti. Sunset Beach is on the west side of Whidbey Island. The San Juan Islands are on the horizon.

A fellow photographer was catching the waves at West Beach November 9. I was safely standing on a bulkhead. It just goes to show you what we'll do to get that one photo we're looking for.

Winter Storm Sunset

The sunset last night was swallowed up by the crashing waves at Sunset Beach. We'd had one storm come through early in the day and I could see another on the horizon.

Stormy Salish Sea

The strong west wind provided enjoyment for these fellows. This view was looking north from the west side of Whidbey Island.

This was the view to the southwest, with the Olympics in the distance.

Sunset Waves

The sunset wasn't all that exciting last night but I wanted the drive to the beach to be worth the time.  The tide was in at Libbey Beach so I had to shoot from above.  This is an 18mm shot, 1/4 second exposure at f 4.0.  It's always fun to experiment.
