Character Naming

As an Author naming your Character is an important step right after coming up with the plot. I am here to help you choose the right character name for you and your story.

Make sure your character name is Genre Appropriate. Make sure if it's a Historical Fiction novel or takes place in a real time period that the name was used then. Or if it's a fictionalized place then you can be as creative as you wish.

Just have fun with naming your character. It is after all your story.

Melyonen

Meaning: (A modern Cornish vocabulary name meaning Violet, Born of the Sea)

Origin: (Cornish, Old Welsh)

Pronunciation: (mel-YON-en, mel-YONN-en)

Gender: (Female, Uni-Sex)

I think of a maiden that lives in a sea side village in the middle ages or a fantasy realm being named this. It is very pretty and seems to roll well off the tongue when said or at least for me. The meanings are pretty and I think it would be cute if the character was nicknamed Mely or Melly kind of like Nelly. I have a story I think this would be absolutely perfect in!

Trevor

Meaning: (Prudent, Industrious, Tight, Large Village, Goodly Town, also a habitational name from any of the numerous places in Wales, in particular the one near Llangollen, from the Welsh tre(f), meaning "Homestead", or "Settlement" and a form of mawr, meaning "Large, Big". Transferred use of the English surname meaning "belonging to Trevear." Trevear is a place-name in Cornwall meaning "the Big Farm, the Big Estate." It is derived from the Cornish and Welsh tre (a Homestead, an Estate) and mear, mawr (Great, Large). Alternatively, Trevor was used as an Anglicized form of the Irish Treabhar (discreet).)

Origin: (Welsh, Irish, English, Cornish)

Pronunciation: (TREH-ver, TRE-vər (English))

Gender: Male

I saw a movie advertised the other day and the male lead actors first name is Trevor and this is a name I associate with both a handsome slightly sexy guy and a very preppy guy as well and that can be handsome and sexy in a way too. I love all the meanings a lot and it has a good interesting history. It’s a name though that is too common for my actual character naming tastes but I don’t mind seeing it in other author’s novels and at least it’s easily pronounceable.

Gwenora

Meaning: (White, Fair, Blessed, Holy, Smooth, White Wave, Variant of Guinevere)

Origin: (Welsh, Cornish)

Pronunciation: (GWehN-AOR-aa, GWEN-OR-UH)

Gender: Female

I was looking up names with White and Fair as the meaning and had Gwen in it. I stumbled upon this one. I have decided to use this as the name of an ancestress of the main character in the novel I am currently writing just as I used Eulalia *see on list of posts* as an ancestress name. I love the beautiful meanings. It is a nice alternative to the variant Guinevere. It does look like a unique mash up of Gwen and Nora. It could look made up by some but it really is a name.

Elowen / Elowyn

Meaning: (Elm, Elm Tree)

Origin: (Cornish)

Pronunciation: (ELL-uh-wen, ehL-OWWaaN or EHL-owWehN)

Gender: Female

This was the name I was looking at the other day when I saw Arwen which I wrote about, it's below this one on the post list. This name Elowen / Elowyn reminded me of a Lord of the Rings kind of name thought it isn't in the novels. It's a beautiful name, lovely meaning, easily pronounced. I love this name in every way.

I try to have the most accurate Meanings, Origin and Pronunciations for the names on this blog. It is best though to do research into the names you decide to use for your characters as there can be errors on my blog. Or meanings, origins, and pronunciations I have not seen thus not been able to add to this blog.
