Protest Against Chiefs Name Goes National Today

I just saw this on Facebook. Seems the protest against our Chiefs name is, in fact, not just going public but actually going national. From CBS News.

Protest calling for Chiefs to change name and stop using tomahawk chop planned ahead of Super Bowl

A bit of the article:

A Native American rights group is planning a protest on Sunday urging the Kansas City Chiefs to retire the team's name and stop fans from using an in-game tomahawk chop ahead of Super Bowl LV in Tampa.

Alicia Norris, co-founder of the Florida Indigenous Rights and Environmental Equality (FIREE), is one of the people leading the demonstration set to take place near Raymond James Stadium, where the Chiefs will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the championship. Norris told CBS News that the use of the name and chop are "dishonorable and disrespectful."

"The Indigenous people of this land have already had a mass genocide approach with regard to their culture and way of living," she said. "And when you further dehumanize them and objectify them, it just kind of falls in line with that extinction of who they are."

It goes on:

It's not just Native American rights groups calling for the change. The Kansas City Star posted an editorial this week urging the Chiefs to abandon the Native American imagery. With millions set to tune in to the big game, the newspaper's editorial board had a message for people unaware of the Chiefs' traditions.

"For those fans, a message: Many Kansas Citians will cringe along with you when spectators do the chop," they wrote. "We embrace the team's on-field success, but don't think a corrosive chant has much to do with it. It isn't fair to ask groups offended by these symbols to wait even longer for change."

With this, ladies and gentlemen, Kansas Citians--including Chiefs fans, of course--I can tell you, it will only be a matter of time now. Wait for it. The only question is how long it will take but it will be sooner than later. Count on it. Like it, agree with it, understand it or not, the Chiefs will be renamed and soon. It's all but done. You can take that to the bank.

The Kansas City Chiefs are going the way of the Washington Redskins, at least in name.

As our Dad used to say, it's all over but the crying.

Final Presidential Debate--Trump Takes More HIts

Yes, we had the final Presidential election campaign debate last night as we all know and yes, The Orange Man, The Trumpster, "President" Trump is now taking hits on it as he rightly should this morning. Here are but some.

Right off the bat, let's put this up front.

Post-debate CNN poll: Biden wins final presidential debate

Joe Biden did a better job in the final debate on Thursday, according to a CNN Instant Poll of debate watchers. Overall, 53% of voters who watched the debate said that Biden won the matchup, while 39% said that President Donald Trump did.

Viewers once again said that Biden's criticisms of Trump were largely fair (73% said they were fair, 26% unfair), and they split over whether Trump's attacks on Biden were fair (50% said yes, 49% no).

On from there.

It's difficult to tell just where this President Trump gets his information.

On the news this week that 545 migrant children's parents couldn't be located after the Trump administration separated them, the parents from the children, The Trumpster had this response.

Forget that they're children.
Forget that they're abandoned.
Forget that they're now in institutions.
Forget that they're no doubt scarred for the rest of their lives by this experience, these experiences.
Trump says they're "so well taken care of."

Right. Sure they are. Just as well as if they were, what?  With their own family? With their own parents?

An excellent summary of the final debate comes this morning from Forbes Magazine, I think.

Just a bit from the article gives a great deal of good information.
  • On the Covid-19 death toll, Trump claimed that “2.2 million people were expected to die,” a misleading number which he has stated multiple times to claim that his administration saved 2 million lives. The number is based on the worst-case scenario modeled by the Imperial College of London which hypothesized what would happen if no action was taken during the pandemic and people continued to live their daily lives as normal, with no change in behavior. The model, however, acknowledged that such a scenario was unrealistic.
  • Trump incorrectly stated that the country was “rounding the corner” on the pandemic, despite the number of new infections rising once again to nearly 60,000 a day, following a dip in the late summer.
  • Trump also falsely claimed that Dr. Anthony Fauci, the federal government’s top infectious disease official, had described Covid-19 as “no problem” and predicted it would “go away soon.” In reality, even back in January, Fauci said that the U.S. had to take the disease seriously, while in February he said that the risk was still low but cautioned “this could change.”
  • Trump accused Joe Biden of receiving $3.5 million from Russia and the amount came through Putin, a claim based on a politically charged report released by Senate Republicans last month into Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Russia and Ukraine. The report, however, does not accuse Joe Biden of any wrongdoing or claims that Hunter Biden’s business dealings influenced the Obama administration’s foreign policy. Hunter Biden’s lawyer has also denied that he was the “co-founder” of the company in question.
This one is a particular favorite for me.
  • In one of the most bizarre statements of the night, Trump claimed that Biden’s platform is pushing to force buildings to replace their existing windows with smaller ones, or remove them altogether, in the name of energy efficiency. This claim is false since Biden’s platform makes no mention of windows anywhere, nor does the Green New Deal, a more expansive proposal to fight climate change endorsed by many progressive Democrats but not Biden himself.
It goes on from there.
  • Under fire for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, Trump tried to shift blame, repeatedly accusing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) of acting slower and accusing her of “dancing on the streets in Chinatown in San Francisco” and urging street fairs and parades. Pelosi made a visit to San Francisco’s Chinatown in late February, where she urged people to take precautions and to be vigilant while advocating the patronage of Chinese businesses. A day later Pelosi called for a broader and more forceful response to tackling the virus, according to the Washington Post.
  • During the debate, Biden claimed that Trump had caused America’s trade deficit with China to “go up, not down”. According to PolitiFact, this is mostly false since the U.S. trade deficit with China in goods and service was lower under Trump in 2019, than it was in any of the final three years of the Obama administration, where Biden served as vice president. Biden’s campaign is pointing to a narrower evaluation that includes trade in goods only, where numbers under Trump have generally been higher than they were under Obama.

PBS wrote this today.

President Trump’s very first line of the night, about COVID-19 deaths, was false and set the tone as he and Democratic rival Joe Biden unleashed a torrent of claims in their last presidential debate.

Of course, this will all be said to be "fake news" by this President and his followers but so it goes.

As a final but important side note here today, it needs to be pointed out that EVERY modern day candidate for the presidency turned in their taxes. EVERY ONE.

Just not this one. Not Donald J "Jenius" Trump.

In summary today:
  1. Hunter is not running for President.
  2. We are not “rounding the corner” on Covid-19.
  3. Vaccines are not weeks away.
  4. Trump can actually behave better if enough people tell him to, if it's absolutely required.
  5. Yes, we know when the cages were built, and we also know for what purpose.
  6. The stock market is still not the economy.
  7. Trump comparing himself to Lincoln is bizarre.
  8. Release your taxes, Mr. President. We know the audit excuse is complete nonsense.
  9. This debate probably didn’t change anyone’s mind.
  10. Meanwhile, too, not one word from this "President" on what he would do if he were, God and heavens forbid, reelected. Not one.
Thanks, Mr. President.
Thanks, Republicans.

Now, let's do this.

More Trumpian HIts Today

This President and his Presidency and administration have all repeatedly stunned me in the last 3-1/2 years. Now the news on him each day surprises if not shocks me.  Check these beauties out today.

Post image

Biden Will Make America Lead Again - WSJ

And that's not a big enough endorsement but note who and where it's from, folks. This is from very Right Wing and very conservative Rupert Murdoch and his ultra-conservative Wall Street Journal. That alone is stunning. And naturally very welcome.

This broke today.

President Trump's tax records reportedly show that he maintains a bank account in China controlled by Trump International Hotels Management LLC. Trump also reportedly has bank accounts in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The president's foreign bank accounts are reportedly held under corporate names and as a result don't appear on the president's public financial disclosure forms.

More on the same topic.

Potentially damaging details of President Donald Trump's business ties in China have emerged with just weeks to go until the presidential election in another body blow for a re-election campaign undermined by allegations of criminality, impropriety and corruption.

The New York Times revealed Tuesday that Trump International Hotels Management maintained a previously undisclosed bank account in China, which paid more than $180,000 in taxes to the Chinese government between 2013 and 2015.

I add this one just because the detail in the title is good and important.

Can you imagine this being true for any other President but this one? I can't. It's like when he conjectured publicly at one of his campaign rallies last week that he would think about leaving the country if he loses this election.  What other President has EVER said or even suggested such a thing?

Yesterday, he collapsed.

He's so fragile he can't do a complete interview with Lesley Stahl for CBS' "60 Minutes."  Again, Republicans, thanks so very much. That's quite the guy you have there.

This President is no way doing himself any favors, I'll say that. At least we have that going for us all.

Then there's this bit of huge, good to great news.

And check out how much more.

I don't care what you say, that's hope right there, folks.

Finally today, there's this not insignificant note.

That's gotta' hurt.  I hope.

Let's do this.

At What Point Do We Address Climate Change?

Look at just three things, only three, from the last one year.

--15 million acres of Australia burned last year, in 2019
--It got over 100 degrees in the Arctic this year
--More than 4 million acres of California burned and that's just so far this year

Are we going to do anything yet? At what point are we going to do things? At what point are we going to collectively change?

On Trump's Taxes

Post image

On Trump's taxes, folks, with that New York Times bombshell article of theirs from this weekend (see link below). This is no small thing. This Republican Party President, Donald J Trump paid almost nothing in personal income taxes for nearly two decades.

The President of the United States.

That is incredible. It's nearly unthinkable. A President? Of the United States? And he PAID NO TAXES? None? And not just one year but for NEARLY 20 YEARS?

Someone wanna' tell us what part of a patriot that is?

Can you imagine the uproar if Barack Obama, the nation's first Black President, didn't pay taxes? And then for nearly two decades, too? The Right Wing and Republicans would have been furious. And livid.

On the RNC---From Dan Rather

Post image

Chilling.

That is the sentiment that sticks with me this morning as I reflect on day 2 of the Republican National Convention. Even to call it a convention is to miss the point. This was propaganda, the pageantry, power, and symbolism of our federal government - OUR government, we the people - exploited by a president who feels unbound by the constitution in his desperate desire to hold on to power.

A secretary of state from foreign soil pledges sycophantic fealty to his boss with hopes of bolstering his own standing in a political party that has become a personality cult. Immigrants are used as props in the White House by a president who has demonized, restricted, and mistreated even legal immigrants and asylum seekers. Uniformed military personnel are employed in this charade. A first lady, who is an unrepentant birther, mouths teleprompter platitudes in front of an unmasked crowd of true believers during a deadly mismanaged pandemic in a re-imagined rose garden and is heralded by some for her tone.

Meanwhile, in the real America, there is death, desperation, depression, hunger, and heartbreak. Once again a Black family is thrust into the national spotlight by a police shooting. And scenes of violent protests and counterprotests sweep across our national discourse, encouraged by a president who sees personal gain in racial division.

The polls tighten, or do they? What is hitting with the public and what isn't? How are these speeches playing? These are questions for the mechanics of the horse race. They are the comfortable grooves into which campaign reporting usually falls. They are hard to resist. But they do not accurately see the full scope of the moment.

A line of attack on Joe Biden is that he would be a captive of the far left, that he is somehow a socialist. Nevermind that many of the policies of even the more liberal members of the Democratic Party would be considered mainstream center left in most European democracies. But what one doesn't hear enough in our media coverage is the term "far right." Racist and antisemtic authoritarian conspiracy theories are waved off by Republican politicians who know very well what they are about and how they are fueling support for Donald Trump. The trappings of the state are used for naked power politics. Corruption reigns. Foreign dictators are coddled. The rule of law is undermined. Voting is suppressed. This all isn't theoretical. This is happening now. All of it. And in plain sight.

With all of this power, it is rather amazing that Donald Trump isn't assured re-election. It is a testimony to the strength and durability of the majority of Americans, across a diverse political spectrum, who see the threat for what it is. Yes, this is a fight for democracy. But do not underestimate the strength and power of those who stand in opposition. Time and again, America has withstood threats - external and internal - in its uneven march to a more perfect union. And time and time again, courageous and energetic mass movements have signed up for service to this nation's higher ideals. This is a moment of testing, to be sure. It is, as I said, chilling. But it cannot be defeated unless it is clearly seen for what it is.

Know how to get your vote in, and make sure it is counted. See how you can help others have their voices heard at the ballot box. There is so much to despair about, but despair and demoralization is being weaponized by those who seek to cynically hold on to their power. Instead, try to be inspired by a movement of tens of millions across this nation who are determined that this shall not be the definition of America.

Tweets of the Day: RNC Presidential Edition

Post image

Bill Kristol  @BillKristol
·Aug 22

"Mr. Trump...now plans to directly address the nation in prime-time on each of the convention’s four nights." It's not a party. It's a cult.

Bill Kristol  @BillKristol

The Republicans, in 2020, for the first time, have no platform. Instead: "RESOLVED, That the Republican Party has and will continue to enthusiastically support the President’s America-first agenda." It's no longer the Republican party. It's a Trump cult.

Dan Rather  @DanRather

I am confident that every other president in my lifetime would be speaking forcefully in support of the pro democracy protesters in Belarus. This is a shameful abdication of American leadership.

Dan Rather  @DanRather

I cannot remember a time when political journalists so needed backgrounds in criminal law.

And finally, what I think is probably the social media quote of the day.

Dan Rather  @DanRather

There are times I get online, see the latest news, and wonder how we are living in a world where Kafka writes for the Twilight Zone starring the Marx Brothers.

God help us, folks.

God and the heavens help us get to November 3.

And then January 20.

Vote!

VOTE BLUE!!

Four Different Formal Groups of Republicans Against Trump

Four, four different groups of Republicans now that formed formal organizations to defeat the sitting President of their own political party.

The Lincoln Project

Republican Voters Against Trump

And there's this, too, from The Guardian (link below):

A set of Republican national security officials has also emerged in opposition to Trump.

That group hasn’t given itself a name yet, and includes the former Bush homeland security adviser Ken Wainstein, and John Bellinger III, who served in the state department. The group is looking to rally national security officials away from Trump – either by supporting Biden or writing in someone else.

I'm telling you, folks., this is completely unprecedented in our nation's entire history.

Vote.

And vote blue.

We Must Make Black Lives Matter in America

Four examples. Following are just four very recent examples of what's gone on in America.  And for far, far too long.

--Tamir Rice was 12 years old. He had a toy gun. Within 3-1/2 seconds of the police officer arriving on scene, he had already shot and killed the boy.

--Breonna Taylor was at home. She was an EMT. It was around midnight. The police officers came crashing through her apartment door on a no knock warrant. They immediately shot and killed her. They had the wrong address.

To this day, from March to today, July 26, those officers haven't been arrested.  For anything.

Image: ANALYSIS: George Floyd was deliberately murdered, right on schedule to unleash race riots across America to cause even more chaos
--George Floyd was THOUGHT, only thought to have passed a counterfeit $20 bill. Eight minutes and 46 seconds after the officer began knee pressure on Mr. Floyd's neck/throat, he had killed him, Mr. Floyd. The officer, therefore, made himself judge, jury and executioner right there on the street.

--Auhmaud Arbery was jogging, out jogging, in his mother's neighborhood when two brothers, one an ex-police officer, thought he looked suspicious so they accosted him and within minutes shot him with a shotgun. Twice. Killing him.  Again, they made themselves judge, jury and executioner, no less, and in only a few minutes.

All 4 were Americans. American citizens.

Those are just 4 very recent situations, with their facts. 4, frankly, nearly insanely, of many here in the US both recent and going far back in our nation's history.

How could any of that be okay or right? How can any of that be okay here in our nation, in the United States of America?

We must make Black Lives Matter.

See for yourself:

That Son of the Judge Who Was Killed in New Jersey?

The story about the judge's son who was killed at their home in New Jersey by some masked stranger at their home was bad, horrible enough.

daniel-anderl.jpg

It gets worse. Far worse.

According to CBS News:

"The AP says Salas is presiding over a lawsuit in which Deutsche Bank investors assert the bank made false and misleading statements about its anti-money laundering policies and didn't keep tabs on 'high-risk' customers including convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein."

Also from the Associated Press:

"More recently, (Judge) Salas has presided over an ongoing lawsuit brought by Deutsche Bank investors who claim the company made false and misleading statements about its anti-money laundering policies and failed to monitor 'high-risk' customers including convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein."

Could that get more complicated or indicting or suspicious-looking?

Very Indicative Poll Out Today on this Pandemic, the President and Nation

There is a very indicative CBS News poll out today.

Just a few of the conclusions from it.

image035.jpg

image032.jpg

image026.jpg

Note that on this last one, this means a whopping 59% of we Americans think and believe this President Trump is handling this pandemic badly. That's no small thing at any time but especially in a presidential election year. Same with this next point.

image025.jpg

As I've said and keep saying...

God and heavens help us.

Oh, and thanks, Mr. President.
Thanks, Republicans.

How Is Donald Trump Even Still President?

Post image

This is how bad it is. This is where we are now, presently.

We have a President who, in the middle of the worst pandemic of the last 100+ years, actually advised American citizens to--wait for it--inject disinfectants to fight the virus.

"It’s a common method that people utilize when they want to kill themselves," one doctor said.

The makers of these products has had to warn Americans about this.

And check it out. Even HIS OWN FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, had to clarify that this President's recommendations are a patently bad and wrong idea.

Keep in mind, too, this isn't the first ignorant--stupid?--dangerous thing this President has advised we the American people on this pandemic.

The same President who was shown in a court of law to have taken funds from a charity, for God's sake, for his political campaign. He had to pay back 2 million dollars by that same court.

I ask you, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. and Mrs. America, how is this man even still President?

"Only the best people." "So much winning."

Thanks, Republicans. We have so, so much to thank you for now, with this deeply irresponsible, ignorant, self-serving, now dangerous buffoon.

More People Need to Know What's Happening Presently, Weather-wise, Across the Planet

I don't think most people are aware just now of what, exactly, is going on, worldwide, with weather and the catastrophes that are taking place just now.

Here's one, the first here today--
“Greenland is home to the world's second-largest ice sheet. And when it melts significantly -- as it is expected to do this year -- there are knock-on effects for sea levels and weather across the globe.

Greenland's ice sheet usually melts during the summer. This year, it started melting earlier, in May, and this week's heatwave is expected to accelerate the melt.

… 2019 could come close to the record-setting year of 2012, said Jason Box, professor and ice climatologist at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. During that ‘…year’…, Greenland's ice sheet lost 450 million metric tons -- the equivalent of more than 14,000 tons of ice lost per second.”

“…it's already poised to rival the proportions of 2012 -- and we haven't even reached the end of summer. In July alone, Greenland's ice sheet lost 160 billion tons of ice, according to Clare Nullis, spokeswoman for the UN World Meteorological Organization.

‘Normally when you get a temperature record broken, it's by a fraction of a degree,’ said Nullis. ‘What we saw yesterday was records being broken by two, three, four degrees -- it was absolutely incredible.’"

Melt water on the Greenland ice sheet. The Greenland ice sheet (Sermersuaq in Greenlandic) is a vast body of ice covering 1,710,000 square kilometers (660,000 sq mi), roughly 80% of the surface of Greenland. The thickness is generally more than 2 km (1.2 mi) and over 3 km (1.9 mi) at its thickest point. This section of the ice sheet was photographed on the Western part, close to Ilulissat and the glacier Semeq Kujalleq. Positioned in the Arctic, the Greenland ice sheet is especially vulnerable to climate change. (Photo by: Education Images/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)

That alone is huge but then, this is taking place in Siberia, Russia.

siberia-wildfire-russia.jpg

This, too, is happening now in Japan.

There is also this from Japan:

Finally, there is this:

Premium: Ongoing Low Water Levels On Rhine River

“A heatwave in Europe is causing low water levels on the…Rhine…”

At what point do climate deniers give it up? At what point do the get on board, so to speak, and accept our current reality, let alone what is projected to happen across the world, if we don't cut carbon dioxide emissions and pollution?
