I sought the Canadian Club 10 year. It felt like spring. Canadian whisky is a spring drink for me. Light like the spring air. At just under 20 dollars for a fifth, it is well priced. It, like other Canadian whiskies like Windsor Canadian, Rich and Rare, and Canadian Mist is a light whisky. It doesn't have much of the rye flavor that I found overpowering in Black Velvet. It has faint hints of sweetness, but not the heavy vanilla flavor you get out of a bourbon. It was exactly what I wanted at exactly the right price for what you get. Under 20 dollars for a smooth, mellow, drinkable whisky.
Maybe I should add some sort of notes about the nose and the finish and whatnot. If you want that, just ask and I'll throw an addendum up.

Marching on towards spring
The weather has the sort of pall that comes with early spring. It is, I suppose, March. It is time to break out the 35mm lens and watch Donnie Darko and drink Canadian whisky. Speaking of which, the reviews for Canadian Club seem good and it is very cheap and I am very broke these days. So you should hopefully get a review soon.
In the mean time here is a small review for Bolla Chianti. It is cheap - around 6 bucks - and good. Goes well with spaghetti and meatballs and watching the Jersey Shore and fist pumping. Pictures to come later.

Embrace your inner Goth with a pint of whiskey
It's cold and grey. The sort of grey that is perfect. The buildings downtown are silhouettes in the haze and a film of moisture covers my overcoat. I want to drink Canadian whisky. Or else a really "heavy" whiskey. Maybe Old Fitzgerald. Definitely something good and cheap and a little rough around the edges.
I can't embed this (WHY?) but I saw an 8 year old sing Love Will Tear Us Apart with the family band last weekend. I can't decide if this is like the Partridge Family or Dad Rock or what. They're not very good by the way.
Wait, where was I going with this? Oh, while all the whimps like Morrissey you were probably listening to Joy Division on your walkman and taking shots of vodka from your locker because Morrissey is for the kids who get beat up in gym class and Joy Division is for the kids who don't go to gym class.
But when the rain stops and streets start to dry all your cities will turn to dust
Once upon a time I worked the night shift. The most depressing thing wasn't sleeping through the day but being locked inside all night. Outside at night is where the wicked spirits play.
Soon I'll put the wool coat away, and bring out the raincoat. Spring is right around the corner. Hope springs eternal.
Until then it is a long haul.
Just keep on walking, and remember that Goth is a state of mind. And a rumbling bass guitar.
So you can take all your black eyeliner and black leather baubles, bangles, and beads and shove them up your ass.
Back when big hair meant something
WTF???
It is like that video for Scar Tissues but not boring and whiny which is kinda weird when you think about it. Maybe I'm wrong here. After all I did eat the Carne Asada from Costco.
Jeezus that article is so spot on. My wife and I couldn't decide if we would be better off to just vomit that shit up after we made the mistake of swallowing it down. Where was I going with this? Oh right, rumbling bass guitars...
Right. So just remember that even Robert Smith finds some redemption every now and again, even though he probably spent his share of time getting shoved into lockers he probably spent just as much time smoking in the boys room and kissing girls behind the bleachers. He probably snuck a pint of cheap Canadian whisky to the pep rally and wandered off alone above a raging sea...
Ok that last one might get you shoved inside a locker.
Sometimes I think it's too bad that cigarettes have been outlawed...

Mr. Booze takes a break
I haven't had a drink since Saturday. I don't plan on taking another one until Saturday, September 5th. That day, my friends, is kickoff. The long drought is almost over, and the rainy season of college football will be once again upon us. I figured it would be good to detox for a few weeks, in anticipation of another season of disappointments and heavy drinking.
Long have I gazed into the spheres, trying to divine the shape of the season. Will Cal finally have its long awaited break out season and Rose Bowl run? Will USC finally show a chink in the armor? Will Florida run the tables and show the world why Urban Meyer is the best of the best? Will Notre Dame finally return to glory? Can Bob Stoops break the "Chokelahoma" mantra?
These answer I cannot give. Clouded, the future is. It was clouded last season, and I could not foretell the answers. This year, even murkier the waters have become.
I still haven't decided what I'll drink for game day kickoff. I am thinking I'll give Canadian whisky another go, and this time maybe go crazy and spend more than ten dollars. Ian Fleming drank Tangle Ridge. Shall I give that a go?

Whiskey ups and downs
First, the good news: interwebs rumor that Amrut Indian Whisky is coming to the States in October 2009. Great. Unless I don't like it, in which case it will be like that time I bought the first Carcass album Reek of Putrefaction expecting Heartwork/Necroticism style awesomeness. Boo!
The bad news: internet rumor is that Paddy's will be sold. To whom? Maybe the buyers will keep production at Midleton and fight to expand market share and bring it to America. Maybe they will roll it up or muck it up. I've never had it. Maybe it is terrible? Maybe it is awesome. I'm hoping it is the latter and that someway or somehow it comes Stateside.
Final thought: it seems a shame that I live so close to Canada (though so far compared to where I once lived - just an hour away) and yet I've barely scratched the surface of Canadian whisky. And to be fair, I've had much better experiences with our well mannered neighbors to the north than with American whiskey. Take that, Kessler's. Smooth as silk my ass.

Oh Canada
My adventures down whiskey lane have taken me to the Great White North. I bought some Canadian whisky for the first time. Now, I've had Canadian whisky before; R&R and Canadian Mist. Probably some Crown Royal at some point too. Never been too impressed by it. But I read good reviews of Windsor Canadian. I bought some because it was half the price of Irish Manor (someone took all the 7 dollar rebate tags!). But it was easily half the taste as well. So for me it wasn't a value buy. Hard to say why it wasn't good, it just wasn't. Wasn't good on the rocks and wasn't good in cola. Maybe there are better value Canadian whiskies out there, but this one wasn't it. Next time R&R for sure.
