savannah's olympic torch sculpture

perhaps you might remember that the olympic games were held in atlanta, georgia in 1996. the olympic torch passed through savannah that year and it was also the venue for the yachting competitions of the olympics. to commemorate savannah's olympic role, this torch sculpture was made depicting five columns which represent each of the five olympic rings. this sculpture, which was originally lit with the olympic flame from greece during the atlanta olympics, stands by the riverfront.

savannah's waving girl and miss iggy's first blogoversary!

miss iggy met florence martus (1868-1943), savannah's famous "waving girl" at the southeast end of river street. it was said that she never failed to welcome a passing ship either by day with her white cloth and by night with a lantern. she had lived most of her life waving to ships that sailed through savannah river, hoping that the ship she waves at will be that of the sailor lover who had given her the white kerchief that she tirelessly flailed at the wind. whoever that sailor dude is, he seriously stood her up!

her faithful ritual of 44 years ended in 1931, and artist felix de weldon created this statue in her honor. such a sad story, right?

this short videoclip by fortuitous faery shows you an inscription beneath her statue which reads: "her immortality stems from her friendly greeting to passing ships, a welcome to strangers entering the port and a farewell to wave them safely onward."

guess what? today is miss igorota's first blogoversary! eat something with strawberries if you want to join the celebration! or...you can still join the travel journal give-away by leaving a comment on this post!

savannah's river street

savannah, georgia is right by the river, and you shouldn't miss river street. it's lined with shops that sell local products such as glazed pecans and other sweets.

if you're not in the mood for shopping, there are street performers that keep you entertained as you stroll along the park by the river. you can also cruise along savannah river on one of their ferry boats, if you wish. it's worth waiting for the sunset by the river.

miss iggy's got georgia on her mind

jersey iggy felt just peachy watching the sunset at savannah river, with the talmadge memorial bridge's silhouette as the skyline backdrop at this famous tourist destination in georgia.

savannah is known as "the first city of georgia," when the british turned this into a royal colony in 1733, led by general james oglethorpe. at the time, it served as georgia's colonial capital. savannah river is a major southeastern river which ultimately flows into the atlantic ocean.

savannah is also the home of food network star paula deen and her equally culinary-capable sons, the deen brothers (jamie and bobby). she even has her own cooking stuff for sale at river street, and if you're a paula deen fan, you can go on the special "paula deen tour."

jersey iggy didn't have much time for trolley tours, so she explored river street by foot instead.
