Weekend Highs and Lows

This past weekend I went down to Chestertown Maryland to relax on my parent's houseboat. It was a mixed weekend.

On Saturday I went into town and walked the quaint brickside walks and then popped into the Compleat Bookseller on 301 High Street. I really like the independent booksellers. I said I wanted "that book on potato peel pie" and the woman ran to the shelf and pulled down a copy for me.

While in town I noticed the fountain in Fountain Park was back!

a cast metal water fountain in Chestertown
One of the earliest depictions of the cast-iron fountain found in Chestertown's Fountain Park appeared in the 1853 edition of Godey’s Lady’s Book.

at the top a lady pours wine into a goblet
The Fountain was a project of the Ladies Improvement Society. It was dedicated at its current location in 1899. Hebe, goddess of youth and beauty and cup bearer to the gods, stands atop the ornate cast-iron fountain.

then three swans with upturned heads spurt water from their mouths
Below Hebe are three swans with upturn heads with stretched necks - with water founting from their beaks.

Another shot of the three swans
I enjoyed the sound of falling water and the cooling spray of mist when the breeze picked up the splashing water.

panting lions with pink tongues lap the water at the base

four child frolic at the river's edge while a black lab is life guard
Back at the wharf, I stood and watched four young children, two boys and two girls, the oldest might have been five years old; splash and play at the edge of the river. They were off a "transient" boat, overnighting after a cruise to the wharf from Annapolis. They were zealously watched and protected by a Black Labrador. Her name was an odd one, I was happy to meet Miss Apple.

my hand holding up Dorkys' book club book with the view past it down the blue waters of the river
After my walk on Saturday, I sat at the stern (rear or back end to you landlubbers) of the boat and read the book selected for Dorkys' book club. Three hours later, I stood up and went inside as darkness was falling.

sunsets on the Chester River
There is something about the placid calm and stillness along the river at dusk. The old wooden boats bob up and down so gently as the breeze starts to die and the lights starts to come on in the buildings in the distance.

Inside I read my book, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, into the evening and was surprised when I hit the back cover. It has been a long time since I've read a book cover to cover essentially non-stop. A marvelous book - easier to follow if one knows a little WWII history (London, Guernsey, France, and a couple grim places in Germany), a little more about classical literature, and a small amount of geography, now I'm all eager to participate in Dorkys' upcoming book club session.

mushrooms as big as my foot and bigger
The next day I started to walk up the driveway where I spotted huge mushrooms. here and there, across both sides of the road for two miles were scattered groups of mega-fungi.

I thought to myself, if it keeps raining like it has all summer, this place will turn into a rain forest.

grape vines in rows
The tree farm is diversifying. They have added 5 or 6 very long rows of grape vines. Someday, in a couple years, I'll do a Cloverly Farms wine review for you all.

Unfortunately, shortly after I took this picture, the new medication I started at the end of last week did me in. I plodded back to the boat and spend the rest of Sunday morning feeling seasick and semi-delirious, not that anyone would ever notice anything different in that regard.

I can laugh now at being "seasick" on a boat that barely ever rocks more than perhaps a quarter inch...and I promise I'll catch up with your entries and emails just as soon as I can.

Hope you're feeling better. That sunset is amazing.

Isn't there something so smile-inducing about watching children frolic around innocently having fun?

I love when I read a book in a night. Haven't done that in a year or so.

I'll have to look into that book; I saw it highlighted on your friend's blog about the book club, but I wasn't sure if it would hold my interest or not, but to hear of you reading it in almost an entire setting over the course of one day, it does sound intriguing

I loved the statue; so much history there; I would enjoy being close to it as the water cascaded down

those mushrooms were huge!!

sounds and looks like it was a pretty okay weekend (except of course for being "seasick"; that doesn't sound like fun at all)

Hey- take care of yourself. I loved the photos and little history lesson.

I'm reading three different books right now. And yes, I love it when when you literally can't put one down!

Wow, that is so weird! My aunt in MN was telling me about her book club reading that book and how much she enjoyed it. She gave me a short synopsis of it, and it did sound quite interesting. I'm glad you enjoyed reading it.

I hope you're feeling better. HUGS

Once again I am in awe of your photography skills.

Not knowing anything about WWII, literature, or geography, I don't know about the book. But I'll look it up.

Hope you feel better.

I like independent booksellers too. Sometimes it's okay to pay full retail price for a little bit of good karma.

It looks like you have enjoyed your time at Chestertown this summer. Are you going back again before the summer officially ends?

I read 2-3 books a week, so in order to meet that quota, I have to read at least one without taking a break. I always spend my Saturday mornings with my nose in a book.

How's the bummed shoulder and twisted ankle? I like the progressive pictures. And darned if there wasn't a deer being chased by an OCHA! Had to laugh.

That book club idea is intriguing...

I'd check with the doctor if those new pills are making you sick. don't want us all worrying about you now, do you? Hope you're better by now and the aches and pains have subsided. I miss it when I haven't been able to get here to travel with you for a while. Loved the fountain, the beauty of the water at sunset, the laughter of the children, intriguing book, and miracle grow mushrooms. Sorry the rest of your weekend didn't go as well. It is so crummy feeling crummy. :(

It looks so peaceful on that boat. Gotta love peace and quiet when you have a good book to read.
