Wheelie Bins on Albert Road
Although these bins are on Albert Road they belong to the houses on Croft Street the backs of which are on the right. On the left are the backs of houses on Bowling Green Street.

Pylons over Hattersley
These pylons (or towers as they are known as in the electricity transmission industry) form an electrical bridge over Ashworth Lane at Hattersley and across the site earmarked for a new Tesco superstore before marching on towards Harrop Edge.
A source I'm unable to name told me that this line was due for renewal in 2011 and opined that if a supermarket was to built here then their route would need to be realigned.
A wider view of these pylons can be seen on Geograph.
A closer view of the top of a pylon can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

War-time Relic on Rosemary Drive.
A few weeks ago I showed you shadows on Rosemary Drive.
This is the other end of the drive where it joins Stockport Road.
Next to the electricity substation is a telegraph pole and then a larger pole on top of which is an old air-raid siren from WWII.
George Wain, an art teacher at Hyde Grammar School, was also an amateur film maker.
During WWll he was commissioned by "The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents" to make road safety films for school children.
The film of his trip to Sutton in Surrey, and London, and his return home to Dowson Road and his family during the summer of 1942 can be seen on Old Hyde.

Q is for Quandry
Last Saturday we found ourselves in a Quandry when we came out of the car park entrance to the Clarendon Mall intending to go through the loading bay area to Clarendon Place.
We discovered that a litter bin had recently appeared next to the stairwell entrance to the multi-storey car park. It blocks access to the kerb leading round the side of the car park. Vehicular access between the ground level car park adjacent to the Mall and the loading area/taxi pick-up point is blocked by a steel fence. Whilst wheelchair access from Clarendon Place wasn't ideal, involving a right angle turn onto the dropped kerb and off again by the stairwell exit, it is now impossible.
I had a Quiet word with the Markets Manager who eQuipped me with the appropriate contact at the council. I have sent a Query Questioning the positioning of the bin. Will they Quibble or act Quickly?
I await a reply

The Binmen on Reynold Street
They are probably not called binmen these days but I'm sure you know what I mean.
It used to be the case that it was the binmen (refuse operatives I presume) who drove the gritters, so when the snow came the bins (that's garbage for the benefit of my american readers) didn't get emptied.
Now the thaw has come so the refuse in the large wheelie-bins at the back of the market in Clarendon Mall can be emptied.

Theme: Changes
The CDPB theme today is Changes which (if three years can create a tradition) is a change in itself.
Traditionally today has been when we've published our best photo of the year, but this year that has been put back to January 15th.
As a result of that decision the deadline for voting for Hyde Daily Photo of the Year 2009 has been put back to 11.59 pm GMT on January 2nd, so there is still a little time left to make your choice. There are twelve contenders. Everyone has six votes to cast in the manner they choose. The photographs and voting form can be found at Best of Hyde 2009.
Meanwhile, my contribution to today's theme is a photograph of Hyde Telephone Exchange on Water Street.

Scout Moor Wind Farm
Scout Moor Wind Farm can be clearly seen from the higher parts of town.
It lies some 20 miles to the North on the moors beyond Rochdale towards Rawtenstall.
A gallery of photographs showing the construction of the farm can be found on the Geograph site.

Tramlines revealed?
When the roadworks started in April for the laying of a new gas main, our old mate Tom said
the last time I saw this part dug up you could see the old cobbles and tram tracks.. might be worth a closer lookso here is a closer look at one of the holes dug by the digger outside the NatWest.
Are those old tramlines? I'm not so sure.
See how the corner looked three quarters of a century ago.

Tanker on Treacle Brow
When I showed you the view down Treacle Brow at least one person spotted the tanker at the bottom.
Here is a close-up - no it isn't delivering beer nor treacle - it is clearing out the drains.

Behind the Fire Station
Behind the Fire Sation on Railway Street is the railway line from Hyde Central towards Romiley.
You can't see that of course.
What you can see is the Adamson Factories behind the railway.
Beyond Adamsons is the canal.

Signs of impending traffic chaos
I just noticed these signs the other day.
These two were at the bottom end of Market Street, but there are others higher up, all the way to Union Street.

I showed you a workman emptying the contents of our wheelie bin into the back of a refuse wagon last year.
Here is a full length shot of the vehicle.

Rubbish goes in Skips
On yesterday's post someone commented
I see on the side of the green bin, it says "your litter please". I thought 'litter' was an american term, i am surprized to see it there. What ever happened to plain old 'rubbish'
Well "litter" is the stuff we throw away on the street, whereas "rubbish" is what we clear out of our homes. If you are doing some building work or renovation then you'll put the rubbish in a skip. I saw this one a few weeks ago near the Queens and was surprised to see it still there a week later.
