Over the Duckboards
These duckboards in Gower Hey Woods afford walkers a dry passage across an area of swamp. Fallen trees in the swamp are covered with moss - see them on Hyde DP Xtra.
Tomorrow Hyde Daily Photo will be 5 years old.
Over recent months I have been going through all the old posts, removing many dead links and irrelevant comments, and overhauling the tags/labels.
This brings to an end Hyde Daily Photo Volume 1 (2006 - 2011). The archives here will continue to be maintained.
A new blog has been created at http://hydedaily.blogspot.com/ The new URL is five letters shorter but although photo has been dropped from the URL they will still be the main content of the new blog.
Additional photographs will continue to be published on Hyde DP Xtra which is also where you will find the links to my blogger friends.
Non-contemporary material will still be published from time to time on Old Hyde.

The Edge of Hyde
Here is the Western edge of Werneth Low ["Low" is an Old English word meaning "hill"].
Poking into view is the steeple of Hyde Chapel.
You can tell from the trees which way the wind blows.
Today is theme day for members of City Daily Photoblogs and this month the theme is Edges. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants.
Next week Hyde DP will be five years old!

Just a short way upstream from last week's bridge over Gower Hey Brook is this little flat bridge.

Shadows over a bridge
Last week I showed you a bridge over Gower Hey Brook and the steps that lead to King George Road.
I went back there last week, crossed the bridge, climbed a few steps and took this looking down on the bridge with the sun casting the shadows of trees across it.
For the original wider and coloured version see Geograph.
For more shadows visit Hey Harriet.
For more bridges visit San Francisco Bay Daily Photo.

Bridge over Gower Hey Brook
Come from Osborne Road down the cobbled road I showed you on Friday and you will reach Gower Hey Brook.
Cross it on this little wooden bridge and climb the steps up to King George Road.

Road through Gower Hey Woods
In October 2009 I asked you to choose your path out of Gower Hey Wood.
This is the right hand path leading to Osborne Road.
Although now only a footpath, in the mid-19th century it was a busy road sett with cobbles leading to an industrial complex in the valley but none of that now remains.

Lumn Hollow
Lumn Hollow is, I think, the site of The Lumn. Long demolished it was the oldest house in Hyde.
An old text quoted on Hyde Cheshire states
In the background is a block of flats called Chartist House.
For the coloured version of this photograph see Geograph.
An old text quoted on Hyde Cheshire states
a lane led to Walker Fold Lane, down Lumn Hollow, where an ancient bridle path, passed by Lumn Farm, then branched off, and then it became Ridling Lane, until it joined Hoviley Lane at Ridling pits (on the site of Queen's Hotel, Clarendon Place). The semi-detached houses you can see here are on Ridling Lane. Some years ago Victorian terraced houses lined both sides.
In the background is a block of flats called Chartist House.

Winterbottom View
The waste ground in the foreground of this shot used to be Winterbottom Grove on the Hattersley Estate. It is part of the area East of Stockport Road that was demolished in recent years.
We are here overlooking Mill Hill Green with Mottram church in the background.

The building on the left is Tameside Leisure Pool which was recently refurbished and renamed Hyde Pool.

Haughton Dale Nature Reserve
This is the entrance to Haughton Dale Nature Reserve off Mill Lane.
On the left is the River Tame on the other side of which once stood Hyde Hall.
Here was Glass House Fold, where a company of refugee Flemish glass makers and blowers had settled during the reign of Elizabeth I and where the Clarke family worked coal pits but these were abandoned by the mid 19th century.
Nowadays Haughton Dale is the largest reserve in Tameside covering 40 hectares.

Path to Mona Street
This footpath leads from Douglas Street to Mona Street and Vernon Street.
On the left is Greenfield Primary School built on the site of the former James North factory.
On the right is a recreation ground of which you can see more on Hyde DP Xtra.
With all the strewn leaves it looks a bit like autumn but in fact the photograph was taken in July.

Kingston Recreation Ground (site of Hyde Hall)
Kingston Recreation Ground lies off Mill Lane above the River Tame. The area was originally the site of Hyde Hall the family estate of Hyde John Clarke.
The original Hyde Hall, dating from the seventeenth century, was considerably altered in the mid eighteenth century creating a Georgian country house. The hall was demolished in 1857, although a farm building survived into the twentieth century. The site of the Hall was purchased by Hyde Corporation in 1924.
Another photograph of Kingston Recreation Ground can be found on Hyde DP Xtra.
A view of Hyde Hall in 1794 and more details about its history can be found on Old Hyde.

Gower Hey Woods are in the background.
