Sharmoofers: The Stoners Of Egypt Get A Reggae Band @sharmoofers

In the wake of the revolution of January 25th 2011, many cool bands emerged and many of them have managed to survive and meet commercial success. However most of these bands had some kind of political leaning. While the music was alternative and fresh, the themes and the messages were all about change. One band had a different take. The world will know them as Sharmoofers. They seem a lot more like Bowling for Soap feel.

This is an indie band that and never wanted to talk about anything serious, they have no issues to care about and they do not pretend to have an impact on Egyptian youth or leaders. They wanted to make dope music, sick beats and have fun. Sharmoofers has no social message, their motto "music to make people happy"

They sing about random things (and sometimes silly) matters, but they keep it fresh and their music is something else. Most of the time, people do not make sense of what these guys are saying, but they know they like it. They band has their critics too, but they forget that the goal here is to entertain and not to ask people do things differently.

I like how they use a bit of rap, Reggae, and pop to excite people around whatever topic they feel like tackling.

Syrian Musicians Turned into Street Artists in Turkey (Video)

God help these millions of refugees. If reports are right there are more than 2 million Syrian refugees in Turkey--mostly Syrians. Many of them are exciting people who had a life before the war in Syria, and some of them are musicians. So it was only a matter of time for a Syrian band to take on the streets of Turkey and dazzle the world with their music

Music makes people feel good and heals the soul. See these shattered people but not broken do a lovely cover for one of the most memorable songs by Egyptian pop star Amr Diab. Street artists are a dignified way to earn some cash. There's not much in it, but the artists feel that they are doing their part.

I am impressed by this cover, it's well performed despite all the rage these artists must be feeling by now. It's unclear to me if they are singing for their fellow refugees or for tourists, whatever it's I admire them. There's a lot of talent in Syria and I have yet to meet a mediocre Syrian vocalist.

Black Theama Grows Up And So Does Their Fan Base @Black_Theama

Black Theama is one amazing act to watch life. the trio vocalists who make up the band are popular among the youth who are seeking alternative music, and the old who want something authentic. The band released a new album few months ago, but unlike their previous albums, I felt the marketing has not kept up and there was little coverage about this new work.

But glad to see the video below by these artists and their band doing a live song is pretty neat as the band spends a great deal of time on the road, so they have perfected their live show. Their song Kebert is about life and about all of us. It's pretty different than your pop songs, it's also different than what Black Theama has done in the past.

The three band members are Amir Salah El-Deen Ahmed Bahr  and Mohamed Abdo proud to be the bridge between the lighter skinned Egyptians and the darker ones with such a distinct music legacy.

The Brilliant Iraqi Song By UTN1 Is A Crowd-pleaser @HASSAN_UTN1 @UTN1_Band

The sweet thing about UTN1 as a band is that they are well-versed in Iraqi music. While they make their earth-shattering original songs that travel far and long, they pay homage to other gifted musicians from their motherland. The band takes the music from Iraq seriously and makes sure to perform along side Iraqi music icons.

The music is Ismail Farwji and the song is an original from another Iraqi hit-maker Adel Okla. I know that UNT1 has performed with both artists here in the States. This time, they get to collaborate with both at once. Here's a new cover by the decent human beings and artists who make up UTN1 band. A song where they breath a new life into a lovable hit. Bringing an classic into anew era with new instruments. But unlike many artists, they band gave credit where credit is due.

A song about uncertainly of what comes next, will the days change us or will they change our love? No one knows, and the song speaks about just that, let's stay together as love grows with time. The song is about keeping up promises to those who smile and those who make us perfect. The music is pretty catchy and invites more people to tune in in this speed-obsessed generation. What works is that the band has at least three vocalist whose collective voices speak to different tastes, allowing them to cater to more listeners.

In other news, UTN1 will perform at a beauty pageant for Arab-Americans in the coming weeks, I hope more people see them live and come to appreciate their talent, their class and their richness of Iraqi music.

Basata Band And Asalah Go Well Together #تساهيل

There's a top of the box office film in Egypt today "Wilad Rizik" a movie about gambling, thugs, crimes, family and friendship with four top actors in Egypt's cinema. the movies seems to have a well-crafted plot and a solid cast.

So to market this big film, the theme song had to be good. Such songs get used as a marketing tool when the song plays with videos from the actual film. The sweet kicker? the song pairs one local indie band in Egypt Basata Band with a Syria vocalist diva Asalah and the magic beings.

While Asala did sing with other indie bands in the past, she did so live  ten years ago. This time, her song is pretty neat and the band gives her great support allowing for the song to be great in the vocal department and cool in the hip elements. I like the lyrics about life and the choices we made in life. Enjoy this amazing vocal pairing, and I am happy to have learned about Basata.

This Cairo-based band injects some flavors and local character into the song as Asalah owns the vocal showdown and sings those street-smart lyrics yet inspiring.

Black Theama's Vocal Guests Upstages Them In "Bahlam"

Songs about dreams are a dime a dozen in every culture. They helped sell records, clothes, cars, phones, computers and soft drinks. So every artist has the urge to have their own song about dreams and aspiring to be something bigger.

The Upper Egypt (south) band of three dreams Black Theama did include a song about this very topic on their album released earlier this year. It feels like a religious song where they are praying with God while singing a locally themed song. Not much lyrics really, just a dozen words in total. The song is okay but the vocal artists transports you to some parts of Egypt that you have always wanted to see.

Black Theama's vocal guests takes you there and reminds you of the complex and rich musical legacy that country has. The song is also is available on at least two of three cellphone networks in Egypt.

The Satan Of Egyptian Makes A Cameo In Black Theama New Song

Not many bands in Egypt are as cool or as talented as Black Theama is. Also when it comes to Soul, these three guys have plenty of it. This band which is made up of three dudes who come from three unlikely places from Southern Egypt. A land rich with music diversity and appreciation for all things that has soul.

Here's the latest release from the band, a song that asks of us all to do soul-searching. The band puts the question, "Why have we arrived at this?" This has a lot to do with Egypt in post the army coup on the democratic president--who they have now sentenced to death. No one feels safe in Egypt as citizens feel as guests in their own land as if the army is letting them live in it, but it they break the rules, they will pay.

This can also be a social song about how society has progressed or regressed, the media has changed the country and the social media have caused a lot of changes. Posing the question, why do we only smile when we are divided? Is it our own fault? I must say this is a bold song without making waves, it poses serious questions without hating on anyone. Egypt has a lot of questions to answer....I love the line why parted away with Satan because we become him. The song is not about politics or government, but rather about people who run it.

Listen: Mohamed Nour Live Single Is For The Lovesick

Mohamed Nour is a stud who seems like a nice guy--he comes drama free and often times when he is the news he is talking about something new he is working on. He does not do rumor mill stories and gossip magazines. The WAMA band members, and solo artist is about to release his second album. His first came about five years ago.

The second full single from Mohamed has just been released, he performed it in a beach side concert in Marina, needless to say it's a sentimental song about two parties who are in love, one gives gives, and the other takes takes. A love story that has perfect written all over it, but it really fails.

A song about a party that wants to do everything he could to make a relationship and an ungrateful party who wrongs the other. Nour looks like a guy who can beat you up if he wants to, it's refreshing to see him spill his heart out. He may have the muscles, but when it comes to love he is a sucker.

The Funky Summer Song Arrives! Thank You @Mtmofficial1

The humor-loving band MTM is making a splash literary. The Egyptian pop band with three members releases a new song two weeks before the month of Ramadan. If you know Ramadan, then you understand the importance of washing dishes due to that one large meal and guests due to social visits. But this has nothing to do with Ramadan.

The band is singing about someone who wants to live large, talking about their wish lists of car style and the giant speakers. Guys can dream--even broke ones. A humorous song with a catchy tune filled with street language. The band left no stone upturned as they wrote this song, they covered pretty much just about everything about the Egyptian summer.

But the song keeps it real and tells the guy to go back to washing dishes. The song pokes fun of pool season, and soccer season and Facebook activities. This is a funky summer song that combines best of Western world and the Egyptian street. So now we know that the cool kids will be playing this song as they party this summer.

While MTM is not as prolific as other bands in Egypt, this songs reminds us that they are the fresh band that does have a different take on music. The Alexandria natives Mikey, Takki, Mahmoud come to lead this summer with a fun song that is actually fun to listen to. This is their comeback song after a 7 year sabbatical. Another surprise was MTM's using the same female vocalists from an iconic 90s song "Kol El Banat BitHibak"

‪#‎WAMA‬'s Fresh New Album "‪#‎KanYamaKan‬" Drops! #Good_Stuff

8 tracks made by four cross-talented musicians offer so much more variety and ingredients than 15 track album made by one musician. The reality of it is that WAMA, the four man music band from Egypt is dropping an album this month and it seems like a great pop album for the summer.

These guys really enjoy each other's company, together they bring a lot to the table and whatever they do is pretty much the coolest thing ever. After listening he album, I concluded that he band wanted to make different segments of their fan base happy. Last three tracks are all about slow dance, and emotional lyrics. The middle songs are all over the place. I know everyone will appreciate song number 4, 5 and 1. The rest of the songs will be a subjective decision.

The musical mastering went to the well-known Amir Mahrous, who is a top talent. The surprise was the involvement of Mohamed Atteih, the winner of Star Academy's first season wrote two songs. Karim Mohsen composed a song that I love. This album kicks off the summer music festivals for the band as they line up gigs around Egypt's malls and beaches. Four songs on the album are composed by the artists themselves. Nadir Hamdy did two. Also online version of the album includes one extra song a remake to a beloved Egyptian classic "Salmah Ya Salamah"

The Cool Kids Of #Wama Band Are Back Soon @WAMABAND

Wama did a wonderful job in in the 00s, then they took a sabbatical where each of the musicians in the band worked solo on their project. Alone they have done well and their fans love them for coming back together reviving the nostalgia to this serious boy band made out of men who happen to be musicians and wholesome artists.

I liked Wama then and excited for their return. You may recall, the band came together in 2011 and released a sweet album only to be overshadowed by the events of the Arab Spring days later. So, we are holding our breath for a warm welcome this band deserves for trying to swim upriver.

Many singers and artists in Egypt consider themselves fans of this band as they had many hits and so many memories from these seasoned artists.

Checkout the promo, you will stumble one a track or two that speak to you on a personal level from these stylish musicians.

Cairokee New Music Video Features Japanese Anime @CairoKee

The indie band to conquer all indie bands in today's Egypt Cairokee released a new music video, which would have been a fun event nevertheless. But they wanted to take on a challenge--they opted to incorporate Japanese anime style cartoon for their latest project.

The artists wanted to introduce their song and explain that this is a new idea that has not been done locally before. They get a chance to look and sound cool and funny. They like their Manga artwork that delivers their song.

This is a party song that shows the band in a new artwork and pushes the song into a new realm. The song takes on sexual harassment, drugs, and drinking. I think the song describes today's Egypt state. People who do not have a clear identity. To gather for a party is the only thing that does not land one in Jail.

This is a perfect storytelling tool that allows the artists to do something original visually. Sure the lyrics offer a big buzz, but this visual feat may give one nightmares. Toward the end of the clip, the band dissed their own music video and called it trash. All in the name of humor.

I must say, this is cool project from one band that refuses to grow old or so the same thing more than once. A bit gory at times, but fresh nonetheless.

Indie Band Cairokee Stuns The World Once Again @CairoKee

Egypt's biggest and most popular indie rock band released a new album this week. The beloved band is changing the topic once again. Instead of political themes they have been known for, they are going for every day stories. Cairokee releases their fourth album and it makes their fans happy yet it is faced by radio silence from the mainstream media.

They chose to sing for the common man and woman, the people they made them who they are. The sing for the street vendor, the overworked police officer, the mason the public servant. It's a different kind of song. We do not get as many songs like these in our part of the world. The band is made out of young and bright artists who are well-read and keep up with what's going around them. They come across as cynical idealists.

It feels like a folk/country song fashioned in a Western/Eastern style. I like how the song is in the first person of the common man. The music video showcases many faces of Egypt. I like the daily routines, grabbing a cup of tea and a newspaper. The song is about what people want vs. what they need.

The people just want to live and let live. They do not want to break the bank, just let them live. I understand that the need to have simple and realistic dreams. As for Cairokee they continue to grow and show promise. I love how they change styles, topics and conversations every time you think they may have toped themselves--they come back with something fresh and interesting.  Don't you just love the album cover? Unlike the many covers we've seen where the band takes center stage, Cairokee lets the topic dominates the cover and it shows a lot of class.

This is an album to purchase, support and fall in love with.

Lipstick On A Pig! Operet Ya Helwa Ya Al Bahrain / اوبريت يا حلوة يا البحرين

Three B list singers from Egypt joined four other local singers from Bahrain and recorded a song for Bahrain, the question how much have they gotten paid for this song? AMNS, a Bahrain rap group gets to perform, it's not a bad song, it's actually a very good song....but it has nothing to do with telling the truth.

Marwa Nasr (nothing bad about her), Ihab awfik (the guy who quit singing and then came back, lived in Qatar, then insulted them) and Mohammad Nour (the only guy to release a pro-Mubarak song in Jan 2011) They get a mixed voices and styles in this sweet song. The Kingdom is unable to find truth-telling singers to perform a decent song. They song even celebrates the king--you are lucky to have him. Really? He is godsend?

Did the Egyptian artists sing for free? hell no! I wish Bahrain well, and look forward to see it become a place for all its people. Mohammad Nour composed the song Bahrain can be beautiful...but just and fair is more important than being sexy! Words are cheap, actions are not.

The city of Alexandria gave Egypt many great things. One music band hailed from that town and came rule them all. Massar Egbari. They make music that takes the middle path approach as it's neither western, nor is it oriental. It's both and that's the thinking. They band is back with a new album which they released in a public park near the Tahrir Square where many of Egypt's indie bands were born.

Massar Egbari has a big international appeal which took them to a dozen of countries. For starter at the Malta Arts Festival, Barisa Rock Festival in Istanbul, the International Biennale of young artist from Europe and the Mediterranean (Puglia 2008) in Bari – Italy. International Biennale of young artists from Europe and the Mediterranean in Skopje, FYROM, The Adriatico Mediterraneo Festival in Ancona (Italy) Zanzibar (Tanzania) at the Sauti Za Busara Music Festival. The Festival is considered one of the most important music festivals in East Africa. Macedonia, Lokum Festival in Bitola. And as of 2010, they appeared at the Dubai International Film Festival and in 2011 at the Quarein Festival in Kuwait.

The band made a name for themselves by singing for the big and small picture. They talk about life and all things that are light on politics. They tell stories and seem to have little agenda. This is why they remain in a safe place with the authorities in Egypt. The message of the newly released album is if you fall, get up. And this mantra is needed in today's Egypt. The album's cover art makes that clear.

Members: Massar Egbari was founded in 2005 by 4 musicians: Ayman Massoud (Keyboards), Hani El Dakkak (Guitar & Lead Vocal), Ahmed Hafez (Bass guitar, Tamer Attallah (Drums). Mahmoud Siam (Guitars) joined the Band in 2008 .

The new album has 11 tracks each tells a different struggle. This album is telling on the state of Egypt, as they have been to hell and back few times since 2011. The band gets it and captures those feeling through their music.

Cairokee Musters The Courage To Shame Egyptian Media #Television @CairoKee

Arguably Cairokee is Egypt's biggest indie band, they might also be it's best rock band of all time. I know they shot to fame after the January 25th 2011 revolution, but they made good music and had a decent message. Though I had a falling out with them in the wake of the army coup of July 2013. Cairokee had no trouble expressing their opinions up to that point.

They chose silence, now it seems they were moved to speak about the abuses they see in Egypt. After the cold-blooded assassination of Shaima Al Sabagh- the leftist activist who was gunned down in the hands of her husband.

Enjoy the new song where they rock to making fun of Egyptian media and the various colorful TV programs that offer nonsense and silly analysts. This is a true song, as the media in Egypt has gone to the dark side, and only idiots who are pro army get to have a talk show...but this is not the only alarming thing. TV hosts in Egypt lie and defame people to support an imagined community. This is a smart yet bold song by the band. They do not like what they see, but they know they have a limit on how much they can say.

I like how they take to task the sad state of Egyptian media and finger pointing where if you are not with them, you are an enemy. As far as the music is concerned, this is a sweet song that has some serious appeal to those who appreciate a more Western music style. The band still makes great music, comes up with creative ideas and travel the world in support of their music and their ideals.

I applaud their return to common sense and pointing the oblivious in the lame, no good horrible state of media inside the country known as Egypt. You really cannot have a revolution without either a smart media to educate you or a media so bad it makes you laugh till you cry.

Tear-Jerker! Gaza Melts The Hearts Of Arabs Got Talent (Video)

Five kids came from Gaza to be in Lebanon and to take part of the Arabs Got Talent. But before getting there they had first to survive a brutal war, and break away from a cruel siege. They had to overcomes the odds to make it with an audition tape--they left an impression and the show invited them back.

The music students at the Gaza Music School or Edward Said Music Conservatory know little about the politics of what trapped them into that land known as Gaza....but they knew being a Palestinian meant one has to work harder, and be patient. Eventually, they made it and got to be on the show. Arabs.

They made it on the show, these little guys got overwhelmed, one of the boys started crying and real tears came out. For the first time in the show-s history the four judges jumped to the stage to hug and greet the boys from Gaza. There's a young woman withe them, she is a member of the band. But the one that stole your heart is the kid playing the Qanoon in the back...he had hot tears when he saw the golden ticket was awarded to them and the confetti came out.

They won over the judges none like Saudi Fahid Al Qussiby who was the first to show how much he really loved them. The cover song is a popular classic for the late Lebanese Wadie El Safy. It's an Eastern melody styled song that shows authenticity.

UTN1 Band Just Released A Modern-Day Iraqi Classic Hit Song

Out friends at the Iraqi rock/pop band just released a new music video for their new Iraqi hit. Guitar is the flavor you will remember the most. These guys managed to make what I would call modern-day Iraqi classic. A song that feels old, a song that feels like a remake from the 30s, but it's not. It's a completely new song, they putt he music and one of their buddies crafted the lyrics.

The band has moved to the States and Sweden, but they still get together for concerts and new songs. Filmed in DC and Virginia, this song will linger around in our memory as we remember Iraqi songs like this survive the noise. I can see this song being chosen for Star Academy or Arab Idol. This song feels familiar to one's heart.

I did hear this song early on this year and I recall, how excited I was. When the song was officially released, the fans loved it and a number of radio stations in the States and the Middle East just ran with it. This is a nice comeback song from a band that wants to stand from the pack and sing music about the motherland and the loves ones over there.

I am reminded by the music of the likes of Ilham Madfai and such artists who do music fusion without losing that distinct Iraqi vibe loved by the Arab folks and appreciated by Westerners. UTN1 does it here and one cannot help but ask for more.

The Intersting History Of Legendary Egyptain Singer Mohamed Abed El Motteleb

Back at his prime, the classically trained Arabic singers in Egypt, mocked him, and some even went as far as calling him "the donkey of the radio" but the joke was on them. The name stuck around and now he is one of the most beloved and celebrated voices whose music lands in people's hearts--more people from all walks of life.

This is Mohamed Abed El Motteleb, the boy from El Giza Egypt who memorized the Muslim holy book and after listening to too many music records at the local cafes, he made it as a backup singer in Abdel Wahab band--the biggest band at that time. Then he went solo from Badee'a Massabny band, later he did a play for Egypt, and starred in a number of movies. Under his name, you will find about a thousand song.

His first hit song was in the thirties of the 19 hundred, and he passed away on August 21, 1980. And yest most Arabs know his love songs as well as his moved iconic song, that Ramadan song.
