GAME: Dead Route
DEAD ROUTE by 2 Zombie Games is a ton of fun! It's a simple game with great graphics...and FREE! It can be found here on iTunes, or at the Google Play store. They have a Twitter presence as well - https://twitter.com/2zombiegames
The overall setup is simple. You're running from point A to point B. The streets are filled with zombies - more and more of them as the game goes on. You are tasked with various things along the way. Killing a certain number of zombies, getting supplies, etc. You are at a full sprint and don't stop, so you need to sidestep and leap over obstacles. The auto aiming makes it fun.
The graphics are rather good seeing as this is a free little game. The simple nature mixed with the complexity of tasks makes it a lot of fun to play. I'll jump in, play a few levels, then jump out and it's always a fun time.
There are mapped area buttons that show the tasks and levels. A simple click sends you running down the street on that task. Shooting your way down the street and taking down zombies while hoping and snagging crates is a fun little time waster that I believe you will really enjoy.
You have the classic "grab money boxes, save up, and buy stuff at the store" deal to level up your weapons and the like. And the ever present "in game purchase" options, but I never do that. Heh. So, I figured I'd show my support for the game by putting this little review out into the universe to show them some love.
Give it a go!

Night Terrors - Turn your house into horror movie
TWITTER:
https://twitter.com/NightTerrorsApp
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/night-terrors-the-beginning/id1112350146?mt=8
Dear....LAWD! heheheh
Mind you, I'm a horror movie nut. I listen to podcasts like THE NO SLEEP PODCAST, LORE, and KNIFEPOINT HORROR when I go to sleep sometimes. Ice water in these veins, Baby. But, when I played NIGHT TERRORS on the iPhone, things changed drastically.
Something about having your own home - a place you know well and feel safe in - turned into a fright fest...man...it's scary!
So, you invest the .99 in the game, down it, clear the schedule for the next few minutes, turn off all the lights, headphones in - very important, then you start to prowl around your home.
The light on the phone is active and lights your way. The object - use your phone like a ghost hunting device, really. Find the spots in your home where the signal is strong and...see what happens.
I was involved with the beta testing for this and I got to see the pieces come into play. The audio side and the improvements there. The light and how that changes. And the signal and visuals pieced in, then all put together expertly to create a really chilling experience.
Now...is it what is in the trailer yet? Crap falling off walls, ghosts in doorways, and things standing in front of you? No, this is just the beginning. But...what a FUCKING CREEPY BEGINNING IT IS! heheehe While some of these visual elements would be lovely to see in future revs, the audio involved in Night Terrors and the atmospheric visuals are masterful and...as I've stated...FUCKING CREEPY!!!!!
How devoted am I to making this work? I went into my BASEMENT with this thing running and the light started flickering and the signal got strong and there was music and a voice and.....HOLY CRAP! I made the choice to return upstairs at once. Oh, but it didn't get better. It was far worse. I went into the room where all my kid's toys are and then....
Well, find out for yourself.
This is a major, major thing. It's huge. Sure, there are scary games on all sorts of systems where you see horrors and deal with them, but NIGHT TERRORS brings the horror to your home. You see YOUR stuff and hear these...things in YOUR house.
Mind you, this is the first phase. THE BEGINNING. And...it freaked me out. Like...look behind me every two seconds JUST to make sure things were not slipping up behind me freaked out. When it ended, I muttered, "Ok...that was fucking great. Now let's get some of these lights on," out loud.
I can not wait to see what's coming next! I want them to do another round of funding somehow so I can toss more cash at them to keep moving his forward. It's a serious dive into the right direction for interactive horror augmented reality! BRAVO!
Just...be quiet or they'll here you.

Mine Games
2012's MINE GAMES...what a turn around this film was for me. Sadly, one can't say much about this film without giving things away, so my short review will be even shorter.
This was set up to be a bore, tell you the truth. Another "cabin in the woods" (the cliché, not the AWESOME film, mind you) post-college grads getting killed film that we all know and sleepwalk through. I tossed it on in the background while dealing with some yawner work tasks I had to do today.
Then, suddenly, something dawns on me. These folks are not your B-teamer gang. There's some talent here. I had to pay a little more attention while the story unfolded out of the corner of my eye. Some of the items here were actually interesting, causing a little more thought and effort. I was resigned to expecting more out of the film. And, lo and behold, it was warranted.
The writing credits are strange....
Robert Cross ... (story)
Michele Davis-Gray ... (writer)
Richard Gray ... (story)

Ross McQueen ... (story)
Ross McQueen ... (writer)
We have people who were involved in INSIDIOUS, SAW, the Director and writer of 2015s AUDITION (fingers crossed that they don't mess that up...). The story is pretty darn tight, interesting and had a few "Wait....whaaaaaaaaat?!" moments in there that I really enjoyed.
That's all I'm going to say for fear of messing something up.
Break the cycle. See the film! :)

ZOMBIES, RUN! (updated 03.22.2012)
There's a new and fun way to get healthy while being entertained out now - ZOMBIES, RUN!
https://www.zombiesrungame.com/
iTunes - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zombies-run!/id503519713?mt=8
I purchased the ZOMBIES, RUN! app a while ago, but a bad cold stopped me from trying it until recently. I have to say, it was $8 well spent. Yesterday I took the app for a spin on my first run in ages and it was a perfect way to get into running again.
THE GOOD
The app isn't just a scare app with zombie noises. It's a complex game system with a fun storyline. The basic idea is simple. There is a story that plays through your headphones as you run. It's not 100% interactive - it just plays through. However, it's a blast if you are able to "play along" in your head. You are Runner 5 - a person of action in the zombie apocalypse being talked to through your headset by people at a base close by. The first MISSION sets the scene. You crash and are guided through the landscape - set off on a mission to stay safe, gather supplies and get to the base in one piece.
The production values are very good. Fans of radio dramas or audio books will be very familiar with the audio storyline format. As you run, bits of the story come to you as actors talk to you through your headphones. The story sets a fantastic zombie tone - creepy and urgent. There are times where the scene becomes very urgent. "They are right behind you! Run, Runner 5! RUN!" I wanted to stop for a breather, but the game really did make me keep going. I gave into the fun of it and went right into the story. The nature of the audio made it easy to do.
You pick up items along your run and they are called out with an electronic voice. "You've collected antibiotics" I wasn't sure what the point of all this collecting was until I got home and played around with the app a bit. It all became clear and I was happy with what I found. The app has a SUPPLIES tab with icons of various supplies. When collected, a number shows up over the icon. You drag that icon to an area of your Base Map (antibiotics to the HOSPITAL on the map, for instance) and the level bar over that area of the map grows. When full, the level changes and the image of the item grows a la SIM CITY. (A small hospital tent grows to a larger, more robust hospital tent) This added another level to the game play that I really enjoyed.
You're also able to play your iTunes playlists through the app if you want music as well as the story. The story comes up between tracks and the collection notes chime in over the tracks. I'm currently working on my ZOMBIES, RUN! playlist with a zombie horror movie soundtrack in mind! :)
THE NOT SO GOOD, but forgivable.
Now, you can tell that this is the first rev of the app. Not by the game play itself - that worked really well. It was more along the back-end side of things. More nit picks than anything.
• I couldn't figure out a way to change from kilometers to miles.
• I don't see a list of runs like RunKeeper where I can chart distances I've run. RunKeeper was a great way to mark running progress. This is more game than run program.
• While there is a tweet function that tweets out your use of the game, there doesn't seem to be a function where you can connect and post to Facebook. Again, I used this feature in RunKeeper to keep myself motivated. If people know I'm running, they know when I'm NOT running and that kept me honest. Plus, why WOULDN'T you want a person tossing Facebook posts up about your product? I can only imagine that this feature is coming in Rev 2.0.
• And lastly, in a perfect world, the GPS would be weaved into the game so that little nuggets could be woven into the game play a bit more. "Pace yourself on this hill" or something to that effect. A programming nightmare, but it would add to the immersion for sure.
All in all, ZOMBIES, RUN! is a lot of fun so far and worth the small investment of cash. It's highly entertaining and adds another level to a run.

Bright Falls
Bright Falls - The Series
"Hello. I'm Malcolm Johnson and I purchased a Wii." :::crowd groans:::: "Hi, Malcolm."
Yes, we got a Wii so we could play Zelda, bowl, ski, work out....and grow tired of it and stop playing. I had renewed interest when I purchased DEAD RISING and my wife got me MADWORLD, but that grew old as well, sadly. Lately, I've been longing for games of old like MYST where I had a mystery to solve and places to explore.
It looks like the XBOX360 is going to deliver that for me with ALAN WAKE. I can't wait!
AND...there's a groovy, TWIN PEAKS style creepfest live action nugget to wet my whistle. The most awesome and fun BRIGHT FALLS mini-webisodes. Take a look!
"A prequel to the highly anticipated Xbox 360 game Alan Wake, Bright Falls is an online series of live action shorts set in the fictitious Pacific Northwest town of Bright Falls, WA that provide an eerie prelude to the events that transpire before Alan Wake's arrival. The series, which is six episodes in length, introduces us to Jake Fischer, a newspaper reporter who, while visiting the town on business, encounters a series of mysterious and haunting experiences."

ZOMBIE INFECTION
I finally took the plunge and purchased an iPhone upgrade from my old first gen iPhone. Of course, in the search for apps for it, I searched for ZOMBIES. There are lots of zombie games out there, but ZOMBIE INFECTION caught my eye and I'm very glad it did.
It's slightly limited by the screen size, but the game play is actually a lot of fun once you get the controls down. Classic "run and kill" action as you collect weapons and ammo and try to make it through the game screens.
A must have for zombie lovers with the new iPhone!

Oh No…Zombies! Board Game
I'll have to add this to the game collection! :)
http://www.mcphee.com/shop/products/Oh-No...-Zombies!-Board-Game.html
Oh No... Zombies! Board Game
It's come to this. You're trapped in the middle of nowhere inside a rundown shack surrounded by zombies. Your cell phone doesn't get reception and the land lines just emit a constant busy signal. Your only hope for survival is to get to one of the abandoned stores so you can get a battery for the CB radio in the shack and a shotgun to help you survive the trip back. Good luck with that. Includes spooky gameboard, fourteen 2" tall, plastic game pieces, thirty-four cards and three dice.
You can buy it here ($18.99):

Dead Frontier
These games usually drive me a bit bonkers, but this one looks rather cool. Standard top down/run around play, but with zombies. The running through darkness idea is always creepy to me, but there is something about this one that seems like it might just be cheap scare tactics. Short on story, this shoot'em'up seems like it may be just that - shoot and run around.
N'joy!

Dead Rising 2 Trailer
Dead Rising 2 is looking pretty good, though it also is looking like more of the same.
As a zombie fan, however, I'm all in! Game on!
