Roof repairs

The roof of the main building of German School London is probably the most distinctive in the area and it sets the character for the building. Opinions are divided but I like it. And I like it just a little bit more when it is decorated with scaffolding poles.

A much older school building, on the east edge of the site, next to Douglas House, has also had some roof repairs. The uneven colour of the roof shows a history of similar repairs and the latest will soon weather and mix in with the rest.

Reflections

This is the rather distinctive German School viewed from Douglas Footpath. I have taken a picture of this section before but that was for the coloured window frames and this time it was for the reflections of the trees.

New fence for Douglas Footpath

The fence separating Douglas Footpath from the German School used to be a simple, and much less sturdy, wire-mesh fence but now it is both brash and robust.

It is good to see that the path has weathered-in too and my comments about its brashness from 2009 no longer hold true.

Back to school

I like taking Douglas Footpath as it winds behind the German School as it is one of the area's more interesting buildings and it is still evolving. The barriers and containers are the latest signs of further change.

Colourful windows at the German School

The German School, sitting quietly on Petersham Avenue, is one of the most interesting buildings locally thanks to its unashamedly modern look. It has become even more interesting with the addition of some colourful windows at the back. Luckily Douglas Footpath ventures behind the school allowing the windows to be seen be inquisitive walkers.

Working on Douglas House

Douglas House, now part of the German School, is covered with scaffolding from head to toe which suggests that a lot of work is being done. It will be interesting to see how different it looks, if at all, once the deed is done.

Fahrradraum

School bike sheds are a part of British folklore, it's where children are expected to have their first kiss and their first (and, hopefully, last) cigarette. But those bike sheds are nothing like the funky new one that now graces the furthest reaches of the playing fields behind the German School. It's just a shame that you have to search so hard to find it.

Fallen

For years these concrete pillars have protected the grass from the onslaught of German mothers taking their kids to school by car. In doing their duty the posts became part of the scene while they aged and weathered. Now they have been cruelly overturned and replaced by brash wooden posts that look completely out of place thanks to their unnatural shape and bright colour.

Look-out tower

These buildings are in the Douglas House complex that now forms part of the German School. It was the white tower that attracted me at first but I also like the side-on view of the roof in the foreground and the wild trees behind.

German roof

The stunning "new" part of the German School has a hi-tech but subtle roof. The building is on the edge of Ham Lands, there is a stable next to it and one of the Ham Avenues crosses in front of it, but somehow the newness still works.

Douglas House

Douglas House looks comforted by the bright Winter sunlight, mature trees and white fence.

German School

The entrance to the German School (Deutsche Schule London) is often locked, it is private property after all, so there are limited opportunities to enter the grounds and take a close look at the still contemporary looking architecture.

Modern part of the German School

While the original part of the German School is Douglas House, the largest part is a modern building. This is the entrance.

Douglas House

Douglas House, in Lower Petersham Road, is now the home of the German School.

Bricks and tiles

I have no idea what this building is (it looks like an old gate house) but I like the bricks and tiles. It is on the access road to the German School and Ham Polo.

Kindergarten at The German School

This impressive building is the Kindergarten at The German School.
