Guest - Suzanne Rock: What Kind of Covers Do You Love?

Thank you so much for having me here! Today I'd like to talk about something that everyone has an opinion on – book covers. Over at Embrace the Shadows, I co-run a book cover competition called the “Cover Clash.” Every week, three book covers go head-head in a battle of the best. Readers, writers, authors, and cover artists vote for their favorite cover. On the following Monday, a winner is announced and that author wins our very own prize – a button called the “Thorn.”

I've been running this competition for a little over a year now, and I as a result I've seen a lot of book covers. Some I've liked better than others. What I find really interesting is what others seem to like to see in book covers. Sometimes I agree with the readers and other times... not so much. It's all part of the fun.

I thought I would share with everyone some trends I've noticed while running this competition. While there are always exceptions to the rules, I find that if I follow this formula, I can predict the winners with surprising accuracy.

1) People tend to shy away from covers depicting a woman standing alone, unless the cover has a lot of background colors, or the woman has an interesting tattoo.
2) People prefer naked male torsos over seeing the guy's face. This rule is thrown out if the torso looks too “photo-shopped.”
3) As a general rule of thumb, people like to see a couple sharing an intimate moment over something blatantly erotic. In other words, romance over sex.

So what about everyone here? Do you you agree with my assessment of book covers, or not? What is it about a book cover that makes you pick up a book? If you're an author, is there something specific you always ask for in your covers?

I'm curious - Tell me about it!

And in the meantime, here is a sneak peak of my upcoming release from Loose Id, called Down on the Boardwalk. This werewolf-menage story is the second book in the Kyron Pack series.

One lucky commenter to this blog post will receive the first book in the series, “Up on the Housetop.” If you feel shy about leaving a comment, shoot me an email with the subject line “Fierce Romance Blog Contest” to enter. I'll post the winner in the comments section on my book's release day, August 17th. Good luck!

Down on the Boardwalk – Suzanne Rock

Book Trailer:

Blurb: Gwen's psychic abilities first make her an outsider among the werewolves. Then they make her a slave. Forced to use her power to help a deranged werewolf seek vengeance, she gives up on her dream of ever being accepted and loved. That is, until Nico and Tony are thrown into her cell. Her attraction to the Kyron Pack brothers is immediate and overwhelming. As she submits to the physical attraction, old wounds heal and her powers strengthen. The brothers think she can save them, but to do so would require more than just physical intimacy, and reveal a secret too dark and horrifying to share.

When Nico and Tony use their lust to help their battered mate, buried memories rise to the surface, and jealousy threatens to destroy the fragile wolf in their care. As each of them bonds to Gwen, they begin to withdraw from each other. Now they must heal their inner scars and forgive the past if they ever hope save Gwen and escape the Boardwalk alive.

Excerpt from Down on the Boardwalk

“The blond woman betrays you.”
The tall thin man crouched until he was eye level with the woman on the floor and narrowed his eyes. “How?”
Gwen Anderson refused to answer. How could she? The future was always uncertain. Even if the vision was clear, something small could happen in the present and forever alter it.
Eric grasped her chin and dragged her face within inches of his. “Tell me!”
She pulled away from his bony fingers and closed her eyes. Tired, so tired. How long has she been kept in this makeshift cell underneath the casino? Hours had turned into days, then weeks. For all she knew, she could’ve been down here for years.
The sting from Eric's slap exploded across her cheek. “What did you see? I have to know. Does my sister betray us?”
Us. There was no us. Not now, not ever. At one time Gwen thought that maybe she could be part of an ‘us,’ but not anymore. Now, there was nothing except loneliness and pain, interrupted occasionally by Eric's frantic questioning.
“I know you saw something important. Amos said you were mumbling in your sleep.”
Gwen looked up into her captor's face. Eric Wright, leader of the Wright Pack and in charge of all the werewolves that lived in the Northeast. Eric Wright, the one she turned to when she had nowhere to live and was out of options. At first he dismissed her, but once he learned about her 'gift' for seeing into the future he kept her caged down here like some animal.
At least he didn't lie to her. The abuse she could take. It was the false kindness of the Kyron Pack, the pack who abandoned her, that hurt the most. She still remembered the look of pity in the leader's eyes as he shut the door in her face --
“Useless twit.” Eric straightened and brushed his long blond hair over his shoulder. His eyes looked bloodshot, as if he hadn't been sleeping.
“Let me try, boss. I can get the information out of her.”
Gwen's gaze flew to the brutish looking man in the doorway. He smiled at her, a slow evil smile that turned her blood to ice.
“Ah, a weak spot.” Eric smiled, showing most of his perfectly white teeth. “Come here, Amos.”
Gwen scrambled closer to the wall. The last time Amos was given free reign it she didn't have enough strength to use her magic to heal. It took her days to recover. Eric would never allow him to... not when he still needed information from her... would he?
Amos slapped the handle of a long, thin whip against his hand as he approached them, his gaze never leaving Gwen’s half-naked body.
“No.” The word came out as a whisper, an exhale of breath. God, she just wanted to die. Death would be preferable to the hell she had been through -- that she was going through.
“No?” Eric shook her until her brain rattled in her head. “Then tell me how my sister Lydia betrays me.” His beady blue gaze pierced her skin as he spoke. He was getting angry. When Eric was angry, he got physical, and she couldn’t deal with that right now. Not when she was malnourished and chained like a dog to the wall.
Gwen moistened her lips and forced herself to speak. “The vision was fuzzy. She hasn't made up her mind yet. I only saw a possibility--”
“Tell me.”
Gwen turned her gaze to Amos and a shiver raced down her spine. She didn’t want to give the bastards any more information, but she didn’t want to get beaten again, either. “The Kyron pack leader persuades her to betray you.” She had seen more, but held her tongue. Eric didn't need to know the other part. It didn't have to do with his sister anyway. Her other vision had to do with her future, or at least what was left of it.
Eric slapped the other side of her face, causing her to whimper. “Liar.” He began to pace. “Josh Kyron is proving to be a thorn in my side. First he harms what’s mine, then he denies it.” He stopped in front of her and rubbed his chin. “The selfish whelp thinks he’s above were-law. My own people grow weak, while his pack grows fat and lazy. Now he wants to take my sister out from under my nose. If Lydia turns her back on me for that arrogant wolf--”
Just then the door to the basement slammed open. Cool air rushed in from the hall, creating goose bumps over her pale skin. Eric and Amos whirled around. Gwen pried her eyes open and stared at the door.
Two large men marched into the room, carrying a third man between them. “We caught him snooping around.”
Eric turned away from Gwen to face the guards. She silently thanked the gods for the reprieve and pulled her knees up to her chest. Wrapping her arms around her legs, she huddled against the wall and tried to blend in with the background.
Eric approached the prisoner. “Who are you?”
Silence. The man was large, over six feet, with thick hair the color of night. Muscles rippled as he growled like an animal and tugged against his captors. She tried to get a look at his face, but he kept his head low to the ground.
“Look at me.” Eric grabbed a fistful of ebony hair and pulled the prisoner’s head up for all to see.
The prisoner spat on his shoes.
Gwen flinched as Eric tugged harder. It must have been so painful, but the prisoner didn’t cry out. Instead he hissed out his breath and flashed his sharp teeth.
“Werewolf.” Eric let go in disgust. “But not of my pack. Where did you find him?”
The guards glanced at each other. “Up in the casino.”
“What was he doing?”
“He was dressed as staff and flirting with one of the cocktail waitresses. He asked her where the casino records were held.”
Dressed as staff. Gwen squinted at the tears in the maroon pants and white polo shirt the man wore. The thin cotton clothes clung to every muscle of his body like a static-filled sock, outlining his broad, muscular shoulders and narrow hips. The air around him was charged with energy. Awareness tingled over her skin. Gwen slid her lower lip between her teeth as a sliver of heat raced up her center. This was the man from her vision, she was sure of it. There was no denying the savage power that radiated off his body, or the sexy ripple of his back.
Stop it. What was she thinking? He wasn't this handsome in her vision. She shouldn't be thinking of him this way. It would have been so much better if he never was caught, if they never met...
The prisoner raised his head and snarled at Eric. “She would have told me too, if you didn't interrupt.” His deep baritone vibrated through Gwen like a caress.
“Whose pack do you belong to?” Amos asked.
The captive pressed his lips together and stared at Eric.
“Kyron,” Eric announced. “He carries the same arrogance as his leader. I should have known Josh would try to retaliate.”
“You're the one who's arrogant. You let the members of your pack live like savages while you obsess over something that never happened.”
“Shut up, whelp.” Eric grabbed his hair and yanked his head up to meet his gaze. “You have no idea what you're talking about.”
“Josh never did anything to your mate.”
“I said shut up!” A loud crack echoed through the room as Eric slapped him across the mouth.”You weren't there. You have no idea what you're talking about.”
The prisoner's chest heaved as he caught his breath. Gwen could feel her heart slam in her chest. Eric was so volatile, there was no telling what he was capable of. One false move, and she could be beaten within an inch of her life.
The prisoner looked up and noticed her for the first time. His expression changed, first softening, then becoming more intense. Power and confidence fell off him in waves. There was something more however, something about those eyes. She couldn’t define it, but it called to her, heated her. The air electrified as his deep amber gaze pierced through her skin and heated every inch of her body. Something passed over his features, something dark and needy. Possessive. Desire swept up over her skin and set every nerve ending on fire. Gwen shrunk back, surprised at the new sensations running through her. She didn't see this in her vision, but then again, her powers were fickle, showing her pieces of a puzzle.
He held her gaze, immobilizing her with their dark depths. His face was thin and angular, hard jaw, but there was a spark in his eyes, something savage. Gwen moistened her lips as anticipation dripped slowly through her middle, hardening her nipples and pooling between her thighs. She shifted her legs and caught a scent of her arousal. If she could smell it, then the rest of the wolves in the room could smell it, too. Yet she didn't care. All she cared about was kissing each of his wounds, licking his bruises while she rubbed her hips against his...
The prisoner pulled against the guards, trying to reach her. Shouting erupted and one of the guards slammed something against his back. The noise broke the spell and Gwen blinked as she huddled closer to the wall. never before had she felt anything so strong. The man awakened emotions in her she long thought dead. And so intense! There was only one way she knew of that a wolf could become so aroused, so emotional. Oh God, it couldn’t be possible…

Don't Cry Wolf's Cover

I'm in the middle of a hellish move, and in the midst of it received final edits for Don't Cry Wolf and finished them, but best of all, I received the cover!!

Much more colorful than Heart of the Wolf's! What do you all think? I love it!

And I received this wonderful unsolicited review while I was blogging on Between the Lines for Heart of the Wolf:

A comment regarding "Terry Spear - The Trials and Tribulations of Publication...And Those Most Devilish of Heroes—the Vampire", an entry at Between the Lines, was written at 8/22/2008 1:32:35 PM.

Comment:
I stumbled on Terry's book, Heart of the Wolf recently, and enjoyed every minute of the read. I found her writing fascinating, and very much to my liking. I loved the strong characters, and the way the hero and heroine tried to protect each other. The efforts were bumbling at times, but when it came right down to it, and when the heat was on high, both Bella and Devlyn are there and ready to step up to the plate.

One can easily understand Bella's fear of Volan, and it is a shame she isn't able to trust Devlyn with her secret, but when all the facts are out, the reader truly understands the difficulties Bella would have encountered, and the tremendous danger both she and Devlyn were surrounded by in that time. As young and not yet mature, their strength and cunning could never have been a match for Volan, but at least as adults, and with Devlyn in his full power, they finally have a chance to succeed.

As time goes on, I hope to be able to get more of Terry's great books. If the rest are as good as Heart of the Wolf, they will be on my keeper shelf for a long time!!!~Rose!~

Thanks so much to Rose, and others like her who make me want to write forever!

Also, I received the new cover for Winning the Highlander's Heart and absolutely love it! What do you think?

Back to moving and working on Allure of the Wolf! Hope everyone's having a great Saturday! :)

Cynthia Eden makes it Hotter After Midnight

Hi, we'll continue paranormal week here at Fierce Romance by talking to Cynthia Eden about her latest story.

Cynthia Eden writes paranormal romances with a sensual edge. Her publishers include: Kensington Brava, Avon Red, Red Sage, and ImaJinn Books. She lives in the South and loves long, lazy summer days (and books--plenty of books!).

Vonda: Welcome, Cynthia! Please tell us about Hotter After Midnight.

Cynthia: Thank you! I’m very excited to be here today. :-) Hotter After Midnight is my first paranormal release from Kensington Brava—it’s the start of my “Midnight” series. My heroine, Dr. Emily Drake, is a psychologist—and she only treats paranormal patients. When a supernatural killer begins stalking the streets, she is pulled into the investigation as a profiler. Emily gets teamed up with the lead detective on the case, Colin Gyth—a guy who happens to be a wolf-shifter. The attraction between the two is immediate. If they can just catch the killer, they might have a chance at love.

Vonda: I love wolf-shifters! What inspired you to write this story?

Cynthia: I started writing this story right after I returned from the RWA Convention in Atlanta. I was energized by the conference and really wanted to write without fear. So, I just sat down, stopped worrying about the market and what was selling well and what wasn’t—and I just wrote. Emily’s character came to me immediately, and she led the way for everything else.

Vonda: That's inspiring! Is this your first full-length novel release from Kensington Brava? How did this sale come about?

Cynthia: Yes, this is my first full-length novel with Kensington Brava. My agent, Laura Bradford (of the Bradford Literary Agency), pitched the story to Kensington for me. I love Laura—and if anyone is interested in learning more about her, you should check out her website at http://www.bradfordlit.com/. (Hey—I plug her because I do think she’s a terrific agent.)

Vonda: Wonderful! You have several releases this year. Please tell us about them.

Cynthia: I am absolutely thrilled to say that I have four Kensington Brava releases and one Red Sage release. All of my releases will be paranormals. I love paranormal stories like I love my chocolate.

After Hotter After Midnight, I will be in two anthologies from Kensington, When He Was Bad (June 08) and Everlasting Bad Boys (September 08). In December, my second full-length novel from Kensington Brava, Midnight Sins, will be available. I like to think of Midnight Sins as Basic Instinct meets The X-Files.

My last release of the year will be Secrets, Volume 25: Wicked Delights. I’ll have a novella in the anthology. Blood Hunt is my tale of a vampiress who has a real taste for bad boys.

Vonda: Wow that's a lot of hot sounding stories! What is your favorite part of story creation?

Cynthia: This actually varies for me depending on the story. Sometimes, I absolutely love the beginning. The excitement of starting a new story can be wonderful for me—so many possibilities. Other times, I love the ending. The mad race to the finish usually keeps me up nights as I try to pound out the end of the book.

Vonda: What can we look forward to from you next?

Cynthia: More paranormals! LOL. Seriously, I can’t help it. I think I have a paranormal addiction. I’m working on my last “Midnight” book now, and then I’ve got plots in my mind for a few paranormal bounty hunter books (don’t have a series name for those yet).

Vonda: I love bounty hunters. I know this series will be great. Would you like to ask blog readers a question?

Cynthia: Yes, thank you! I’d like to know…what is your favorite paranormal character? And why is that one your fav?

Vonda: I'll give you my answer now. Who can pick just one? LOL Okay if you're forcing me to pick one I'd have to say a shifter of any type. Thanks again Cynthia for visiting with us today!

Terry Spear gives us Heart of the Wolf

Hi, everyone, today I'm interviewing our own Terry Spear about her new book, Heart of the Wolf, released today! Congratulations, Terry! Please tell us about Heart of the Wolf.

Terry Spear: While searching for clues of a lupus garou who is killing women in the rainy Portland suburbs, Bella Wilder becomes the hunted. She had run away from the gray pack who had taken her in when she was she young. And she will do so again before the brutish pack leader can have her.

Devlyn Greystoke has a mission—return Bella to the gray pack for safekeeping before she exposes their kind and gets herself killed. But little red wolves are in short supply and high demand and Bella’s determined to be the bait to flush out the killer. Keeping her out of danger is only half the trouble Devlyn encounters as his compulsion to make her his mate grows and she fights being his, fearful the pack leader will kill him.

Volan Smith, the gray alpha leader, claimed Bella when she was young. Now that he has located her, he wants Bella back. And he will stop at nothing to have her.

Vonda: I've read this book and it is awesome in every way! It has sizzling sexual tension and I'm still in love with Devlyn. Please tell us about your favorite character in the book.

Terry: Ack! I love them all. :) Rather than talk about the main characters, I'll mention Zooman Thompson, who's a fun secondary character because he is so adamant about "saving" the red wolf in the Cascades, when here it is Bella Wilder, red lupus garou. As if Bella and Devlyn didn't have enough troubles already with the police, the red male lupus garous, and the gray pack leader who wants her for his own, Thompson is always creating more trouble.

Here's an excerpt about him: "The way Thompson had hunted her in the woods was reminiscent of a bull dog, determined, dependable to a fault, not someone easily thwarted.... He reminded her of a mountain man she’d once met, caring the same for nature’s habitat, the same aura of wildness surrounding him. Except the mountain man wanted to be left alone with no human contact. Thompson was different."

One reviewer said: "This man keeps complicating Bella’s situation and adds some funny dilemmas for Bella and Devlyn to work around and right in the midst of all of their life threatening problems." ~Recommended Read, 5 Angels, FAR, Stephanie B.

Vonda: That's a great review! What element of this story was the hardest for you?

Terry: Deciding who the villain is (as it is in all of my stories), but after I decided that, I added a fun twist, then had to go back through and give hints about it. :)

Vonda: Very cool! When did you know you wanted to be an author?

Terry: Years ago and I started writing children's books. They're one of the hardest sells, although one of them was sent to a senior editor, but they thought it was too similar to a story that they'd just published. Then I began to write historical romance, and really found my niche with the paranormal.

Vonda: You sure have. What do you wish you’d known before becoming published?

Terry: To enter the Golden Heart before it was too late!!! I sold two YA paranormal books to Medallion, lost my chance to submit to the GH, and then two years later the YA line was cancelled and my books had never seen print--one month before the release of the first. I'm entering the Rita this time!!!

Vonda: How exciting that is. I hope you win! What’s next for you?

Terry: I just sold Betrayal of the Wolf (finished manuscript) and Allure of the Wolf (on proposal) to my editor at Sourcebooks. So for now, my next job is writing Allure of the Wolf!

Vonda: Wow that's exciting! Congratulations again! Would you like to ask blog readers a question?

Terry: So if you had your choice and could shapeshift, what would you like to be and why?

Vonda: Nice question! Everyone please visit Terry's website at http://www.terryspear.com/

Calista Fox electrifies with High Voltage

Calista Fox is the award-winning author of over 20 novellas and novels with publication dates scheduled into 2009. She began her professional fiction-writing career in 2004, following a successful career in PR, where she specialized in writing speeches and Congressional testimonies. Her books have received rave reviews and she is also the recipient of a Reviewer’s Choice Award for Best Erotic Sci-Fi Novella.

Nicole North: Wow that's very impressive, Calista! Welcome to Fierce Romance. Please tell us about High Voltage, just out from Red Sage. (And may I say, what a beautiful cover!)

Calista Fox: Thanks for having me again! I’m really excited about High Voltage because it’s one of those stories that literally wrote itself, and every writer knows that doesn’t happen often! Here’s what the story is about:

Lightning crackles all around Serena Lamond in the worst electrical storm she’s ever seen. If only she’d stayed in town instead of braving the dark country roads back to her isolated home. It seems as though the lightning is aiming for her, taunting her, making her trek home even more treacherous.

Suddenly, a flash of green pierces the darkness just moments before Serena hits the animal that jumps in front of her truck. In the torrential downpour and inky blackness surrounding her, it’s difficult for her to see what she believes is her neighbor’s dog. Serena is compelled to save the animal and manages to get it into the back of her pickup and make it safely home.

But when she pulls back the tarp she’d used to cover the hurt dog, Serena gets the surprise of her life. The dog is gone.

In its place is a man.

A naked man!

The air between them crackles like the lightning, but Garrett Slater’s dark secrets and shape-shifting existence put Serena’s life in grave danger, unless he can convince her to trust him. Can he save her from the mysterious perils of life in Silver, Wyoming, or will Serena shun the protection and the love he offers her?

By the way, the reviews have been AWESOME!!! 5 stars!! I’m so excited!!

NN: Congratulations on the fantastic reviews! The above description definitely peaks my interest. What inspired you to write this story?

CF: I love fiction because you get to create your own world with its own rules. I’ve always loved vampire stories, but after reading wolf stories by the likes of Kate Douglas, Mary Janice Davidson and Cynthia Eden, I fell in love with this particular shapeshifting character as a hero. I wrote a short story a couple of years ago that featured a vampire as the hero and a wolf as the nemesis, and it was so much fun to write the story that I decided to take the concept to the next level. Adding in the electrically charged environment just seemed apropos for an erotic romance tale and suddenly, I had a story with really likable characters and a somewhat unique, sexually charged plot.

NN: Yes, I love the idea of an "electrically charged environment." It adds a new element to the mix. What did you like best about writing a shapeshifter/werewolf story? What did you find most challenging about it?

CF: The fun part is the same as the challenging part: You have to build a world and rules that the reader understands and accepts—I think Cynthia Eden told me that. It’s not always an easy feat. But as long as you let the reader know what the rules are in your world, they can follow you down the creative path. The funny thing is that I never really thought of myself as an “outside the box” writer until I started writing professionally. Now, I find it incredibly liberating to push the boundaries or step outside them.

What’s most fascinating about writing paranormal or shapeshifter stories is writing something that’s compelling, but also believable. I honestly didn’t think I was capable of that until I tried it. But, as I’ve mentioned a lot recently, the heart of High Voltage is the characters. They’re pretty solid, despite their own personal quirks and secrets.

NN: Trying new things is fun, especially in writing. I loved your excerpt on the Red Sage site . This hero is definitely hot! Please tell us more about him?

CF: I’m so glad you love him! I love him, too! Not only is he hot-hot-HOT, but he’s got a huge heart. He’s an interesting mix, really. Garrett sort of runs the gamut as far as heroes go. He’s a bit of a bad boy, a bit of a rake, a bit of your guy next door, a bit of an ultra-hunky businessman. He’s an alpha male, to be sure, but he takes such great care with Serena’s heart and her feelings, that I think it’s impossible not to fall in love with the guy.

Sure, he’s a figment of my imagination, but I have known men who are possessive and territorial, yet hopelessly devoted and dedicated to the women they love. It’s an interesting balance. Garrett strikes it perfectly, I think, because he’s waited so long for Serena, and vice versa. And again, these characters literally took over the story. They were so exciting to write because the chemistry sizzled and the love scenes came so easily. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have “discovered” Garrett and Serena!

NN: He sounds like a hero I could easily fall in love with! I can't wait to get to know him better. I'm curious; what is your writing process like?

CF: I’m not a routine person at all, so I have to continually change my scenery and ambience. I’ll write in my home office or on the patio of the golf club down the street or at restaurant or hotel on the water in San Diego or Cabo. I’m inspired and motivated by water, so I try to stick close to it. I also have to have the right music while I’m working on a story. It has to fit the mood of the story. Once I find the right CD, I’ll play it over and over and over as I work on the story. I generally end up needing to buy a replacement afterward!

For High Voltage, my music selection was incredibly different than my usual match up. I typically pick a CD that goes with the feel of the story, but for some reason, I latched onto AC/DC’s Back in Black and I have no idea why! It must have been the fast-driving beat that got me going, because I was typing so darn fast, I needed music that kept up with me!

NN: Interesting! High Voltage and AC/DC sound like a good match. Electricity! You have some inspiring places in which to write. Would you like to ask blog readers a question?

CF: Being a bit of a strategist and statistically minded girl, I am always interested to know what readers think about a specific subgenre. It’s interesting to hear what the industry folks have to say, but it’s more important to hear directly from the readers what they’re into these days. So my question would be: What is your favorite subgenre of romance and is there anything that you feel is just so overdone you can’t stand the thought of one more story being written in this subgenre? :-)

NN: Thanks for being our guest, Calista! Interviewing you is always a pleasure!

CF: Thank you! And please don’t forget that I have some great contests on my website, so check them out! CalistaFox.com

Consumer Choices

If ‘tweren’t one thing it’s another! Have you ever sold merchandise? If so, you probably have been faced with the following dilemma—does it come in a different color? Different style? Different whatever? Why can’t customers just be happy and buy what’s readily available?

My parents used to make doll carriages for doll collectors. They often found this to be true. But don’t you have….? What about…? I’ve found the same with my teddy bears. Even to the point of…but I don’t like that color ribbon! Easily remedied! :) I like easy solutions!

So recently I’ve been receiving fan mail for my books~~~I want “The Vampire…In My Dreams,” but in print copy. It’s coming August 26, 2008…woohoo!!! I can’t wait. But I wish it was out in print already as many requests as I’ve had for it. Not to mention having it in my hot little hands will be the ultimate thrill.

Then I’ve received requests for “Winning the Highlander’s Heart” in ebook format. It was on Fictionwise for a short while, but my publisher removed our books from the listings. Argh. So now, it’s print only. Now I’m getting requests for “Heart of the Wolf” as an ebook. It’s print only.

Sigh.

Having choices is wonderful! Truly! I think it’s great that we can have ebooks to read if we want, but if we choose to read the books in print, we can have those instead. I think it’s super to have the choice.

But when is too much choice….too much? I remember reading a comment from a marketer who said if you give customers too much of a choice, they can’t make a decision. :) Look at the early Ford cars—all black, no choice…easy choice. Sometimes when I go to the grocery store, I wish we had less to choose from---there must be sixty brands of spaghetti noodles, alone!

Do I wish my books were in all formats? You bet. I love to accommodate...unfortunately, it’s not always up to me!

Terry Spear, The Vampire…In My Dreams (ebook now, print book, August 26, 2008), Heart of the Wolf (print book, April 1, 2008), Winning the Highlander’s Heart (print book available now) http://www.terryspear.com/

How to Promote Werewolves...Any Werewolf Specialty Shops out there??

My mother bought me two books on promotions for Christmas and I'm enjoying them, but....it's kind of hard for me to try out some of these super ideas for HEART OF THE WOLF.

One author sold his new book based on being a new father to hospitals, gift stores, etc. This is great.

Yes, go for niche marketing. If you have a book that features travel, hit up all the travel bureaus, airport gift shops, etc. Have a book about a local place where it has a lot of visitors looking for souvenirs, sell to the gift stores in the local area. My mother-in-law bought a mystery thriller, though she didn't usually read them, because it was set in Keene, NH where they had a cabin and it was pushed in that area, local setting, local author.

An author created a book about quilts for the crafter in mind and then self published because, according to publishers, people didn't make quilts anymore. Now since this lady was a quilter, attended numerous quilt shows all over the country, and had won at several shows, but most of all found there were NO books on how to quilt, she knew there was a market for it. So she self published. After selling to quilting craft stores and at shows all over the states....she sold 100K on her own, a publishing company picked her up for the next 100K. She's had several printings and written subsequent books on quilting.

But how do you sell werewolves? :)

For WINNING THE HIGHLANDER'S HEART, since there are plenty of real characters from Henry I's time in the book, I've played up the historical, medieval (I gave a talk about medieval life to a book club where we had wine and cheese!, and am scheduled to have a medieval garden type booth at a garden show), and Scottish aspects (sold to several Scots, and have a lot of Scots in my family tree)....I've been able to market based on several niches.)

But werewolves?

When we were at the movies to see Sweeny Todd (I was very fortunate to see the play in NYC some years ago), there were several trailers for other fantasy shows coming up. Urban fantasy/paranormal/fantasy are all still making their impact on the world.

Vampires...hmmm-hmm...acceptable. But werewolves?

Welcome to my world, where wolves are wolves with a human sensibility, and humans are gifted with the wolf's keen senses. See what happens when the lupus garou break free of the rules of their society, wreaking havoc, and threatening exposure of their special kind. Read how Devlyn rescues Bella only to find themselves in worse trouble than before.

HEART OF THE WOLF is set in Colorado and Oregon. So that's a niche! I went to college in Portland and my grandfather was one of the first doctors in Beaverton, suburb of Portland. Maybe a tie in? I lived in Colorado too. Another tie in?

So you have to find ways to get your work noticed. Finding a niche for more unusual kinds of books might be difficult, but not impossible! You just have to get a little creative!

HEART OF THE WOLF is coming out April Fool's Day. No fooling!
