Flash Gordon movie in development!!!

It's happening! As in really happening. We've been left heartbroken before--like when Mummy director Stephen Sommers was the director of the moment, and poised to take the big screen reins. But the project lingered too long, then fizzled completely.

Now, it seems, 20th Century Fox is finally ready to make a new Flash Gordon movie a reality.

They've picked the right director, Matthew Vaughn has proven himself to a more than capable handler of well-known genre franchises, like when he rebooted The X-men. He's good with fast-paced action and ensemble casts. And his most recent film, Kingsman: The Secret Service was a huge success last year.

A recent report had quoted the last man to play Flash, Sam Jones, stating that a new movie would be a sequel. I really, really hope that's not true. I love the 1980 film. But its place in pop culture is firmly seated in camp. The Mike Hodges movie, the 70s animated series, the 50s live action series, and the old movie serials before them--they're all fantastic in their own way. It's time now for something new. But that doesn't mean we have to start from scratch.

I'm really hoping this is what we're in for:

A Flash that's full-on swashbucker...

A Dale that finally gets her due as a fully-realized character, with wit and wry humor of her own...

And swoopy rocketships...

And close encounters with strange beasts and weird technology...

The 2014 run of Flash by Dynamite comics with Jeff Parker (writer), Evan "Doc" Shaner (pencils) and Jordie Bellaire (colors) was one of the best iterations in years. A live action version of that run, or even something in the spirit of it, with Parker's snappy dialogue and Shaner's sublimely classic feel but still thoroughly modern.

Vaughn would be wise to hire them--as well as Flash's other comic caretaker Jim Keefe--to get some perspective on handling the Mongoverse and its cast of characters.

Parker and Shaner have done an incredible job with their run and Keefe had Flash for years in weekly and Sunday newspapers. Together they'd make a formidable creative team.

In any case, the keys to Flash's rocket cycle to the movies seem to be in good hands.

Yes Vultan--very much so!

COMING SOON to a toy aisle near you: Star Trek, Fifth Element, Flash Gordon, and a certain barbarian...

Last week some cool new toys were announced and revealed at the New York Toy Fair. Here's a few I'm looking forward to--who am I kidding--I've BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO these for YEARS! The sheer amount of sci-fi based franchises here is enough to overload one's hyperdrive motivator. (Click to enlarge any of the images below.)

From Funko:

Funko has had a lot of fun/success with their ReAction figures, which ape old Kenner Star Wars-era toys, right down to the 5-points of articulation and goofy faces. I love that style of fig, so there's a few here that will be hard to resist.

Star Trek!
Most of the main crew from the original cast are here, plus an Orion slave girl and a GORN!

Fifth Element!
I'm hoping this is just the first wave, but they have Dallas, two LeeLoos, Zorg, Ruby, and a Mangalore warrior, so that's a more than decent start. Now we just need some SPACESHIPS!

UPDATE: Head over to Cool Toy Review for a high-res gallery of all the new ReAction figures. More series are featured, including Breaking Bad, Scarface, Taxi Driver, The Karate Kid, Jaws, Terminator 2, Gremlins, Tomorrowland, The Flash, and Big Trouble in Little China.

Mix and match for maximum fun-tizing!
Here's--literally--the most space opera toy ever going octave-for-octave with Gracie the lawyer in a interstellar rendition of The Mikado:

A tale of two tough guy taxi drivers: Korben Dallas vs. Travis Bickle! "You talkin' to me?" "Negative, I am a meat popsickle."

You've long wondered who would win in winner-takes-all melee between Jack Burton and a Gorn. Talk about shaking the pillars of Heaven!

And then there's Tiny Robert Shaw:

Seriously, just throw Darth Vader in the garbage because the biggest badass in cinema just got made into an action figure.

"Did you say you fell into lava? I'm sorry, I survived the @#$!ing sinking of the Indianapolis!"

Later, after the boat is made even smaller by Bruce, Tiny Roy Scheider leaves to work with dolphins.

Flash AAAH!
This came out of NOWHERE. Flash Gordon figures that can now fight alongside your old Star Wars figs: Flash, Vultan, Barin, Ming, Aura (no Dale or Zarkov yet). Here's hoping we get a rocket cycle too. I'd also like a Klytus and a few of those hose-nose troopers.

From Mezco Toyz:

And then, there was THIS announcement from Mezco on Twitter:
THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN FIGURES!! A DOZEN CHARACTERS!!!

Seriously 2015, why do you hate my wallet so?

From Warpo:

UPDATE: Warpo Toys has teased a mega huge Cthulhu monster that seems to rival the old Star Wars Rancor toy in scale. I hope you're sitting down for this:

Imagine how that will look on your shelf as it battles for cosmic supremacy amidst the space opera singers, Starfleet officers, and diving hawkmen! The 12" figure will retail for $99. It's highly likely he'll be in limited quantities.

COMICS: A snapshot of my pull list...

With SpringCon comic convention in Saint Paul this weekend, I thought I'd spill what comics I'm reading in print these days, here's a list of my regular titles:

Dark Horse

Star Wars - Brian Wood's story takes place after New Hope and Empire as Vader hunts down Skywalker to redeem himself for the Death Star's destruction, Leia struggles with losing Alderaan and finding a new home for the rebels

DC

Sword of Sorcery (just ended with issue #8) - Great series that lives up to it's namesake, stars Amethyst and her diverse Gemworld kingdom; post-apocalyptic Beowulf mini-series is pretty good too

Prophet (Vertigo label) - Really out-there sci-fi that's truly imaginative, unrelenting and also unsettling at times

Lot's of ideas to plunder for games...

Dynamite

Flash Gordon - Classic Flash in the 1930s with a hefty coat of the 1980 film's flamboyance

IDW

Godzilla: Half Century War - Tracking the big guy through the jungles of South East Asia. Art by James Stoke is...I don't even...just look (you need to right-click these to really appreciate):

The High Ways - John Byrne hard sci-fi adventure about a cargo crew. I'm amazed at how hefty these issues are--lots of story packed in!

Mars Attacks - After being repelled by Earthlings 40 years ago, the Martians are back. ACK! ACK!

Image

The Activity - Excellent, modern-day, action comic about an black ops military unit, illustrated by our own local-boy-done-good, Mitch Gerads

Marvel

Hawkeye - Seriously one of the best-written comics right now. Fantastic art as well.

FF - Second string Fantastic Four babysits the planet while Reed, Ben, Sue and Johnny leave for a quick "four minute" trip. Lots of charm and just plain fun--love the Mike Allred artwork!

Fearless Defenders - Good start with great character writing for Marvel's first, official all-female super team. Wonderfully inventive covers too!

And anything with a cover by Francesco Francavilla...

Trade paperbacks
I love single issue comics, there's just nothing like holding one in your hands--and I especially like supporting writers/artists who's work I enjoy during the run--but it does get expensive. Plus, friends want to borrow, and I'm sorry, but I'm NOT giving out my single issues! So trades are a great alternative...
  • Adventure Time (Boom Studios) Too hard to find all the singles, but I'll pick up the trade
  • Avengers Asssemble (Marvel) I have most of these, but stopped until the trade comes out
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel) - I'm a sucker for talking racoons so I've got the first single, but I'll wait for the trade
  • Jupiter's Legacy (Image) - Mark Millar and Frank Quitely team up to write about second gen supers living in their parent's shadow, have the first single and now waiting for trade
  • Nova (Marvel) - Looks like good fun with a GotG tie-in, but again, waiting on the trade
  • Hawkeye (Marvel) Have first vol. will likely pick up a few more singles
  • Mars Attacks (IDW) Have first vol., just dropped single issues to order vol. 2
  • Prophet (Image) I've recently been unable to get the last 3 issues due to shortages so I'll now have to switch to trades
  • Saga (Image) Have first vol., I'm waiting on vol. 2, only first single collected
  • Warlord of Mars (Dynamite) I have up through the first two dozen or so issues, just dropped to switch to trades
  • Young Avengers (Marvel) - A new Avengers team for modern times, great stuff, but again--it's almost always sold out, so gotta get the trade
And this doesn't even count the other anthologies, graphic novels, and an omnibus or two that I've got on my wish list! I'll do a web comic list in an upcoming post.

So what are you reading in print these days?
