New Guardians poster is the definition of gonzo space opera
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 director James Gunn has, perhaps, the best reaction to his film's latest poster:
Nailed it. Between the poses, the colors, and the subject matter this here art is the embodiment of what wild & woooly, gonzo space opera from the Decade of Excess is all about.
Here's a nice super-sized version to hang in your bedroom, kids. Click to view the high-res, Ego-size!

GLORIOUS new candy-colored spaceship art from Chris Foss for Cosmic Powers: A Saga Anthology of Far-Away Galaxies, an upcoming space opera anthology by editor John Joseph Adams!

If you're looking for more Foss art, his art book Hardware: The Definitive SF Works of Chris Foss is full of awesome spaceship art and a worthy companion.

Cover copy:
A collection of original, epic science fiction stories by some of today’s best writers—for fans who want a little less science and a lot more action—and edited by two-time Hugo Award winner John Joseph Adams. Inspired by movies like The Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars, this anthology features brand-new stories from some of science fiction’s best authors including Dan Abnett, Jack Campbell, Linda Nagata, Seanan McGuire, Alan Dean Foster, Charlie Jane Anders, Kameron Hurley, and many othersAside from the storied career that Foss had forged in space opera art over the decades, it makes sense that he would be tapped for this project in particular since his art inspired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn during the concept phase for that film. With GG being a touchstone for the anthology, Foss is an easy sell.

Guardians of the Galaxy take over SNSO on Free Comic Book Day!
Well look at that--the very next Saturday Night Space Opera lands smack dab on FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! John and I have chatted many times about what we think the perfect game would be for that day and the answer has always come up:
...because obviously. But Mr Till is also a fan of the old Guardians--the ones before Star-Lord and his merry bunch of a-holes. So we're throwing these guys in too:
...and then we thought why get some Avengers on board, plenty of them have fought along side the Guardians at one time or another. And of course a dozen or X-men who've been in space. And who could forget the Fantastic Four--who BEGAN their adventures in space.
When you think of it, who really hasn't been a part of the Marvel Cosmic Universe?
So come FCBD, there's gonna be an all-out space brawl at the Source Comics and Games! It also seemed totally obvious that in the spirit of all things from the 80s, we should be playing the TSR version of Marvel Superheroes. That's right, FASERIP BABY!
![]() |
Bring on the totally tubular colored charts! |
One final thing, to attend you gotta RSVP on the SNSO CONTACT page. Include some contact info (email or phone) so we can confirm your seat prior to the event and ensure we have enough GMs. It's gonna be BYO 2d10 and pre-gens galore will be available to choose from.
Starts at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY IS AS GOOD AS YOU HOPED IT WOULD BE!
GUESS WHO WON FREE PASSES TO SEE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY?
![]() |
5 OUT OF 5 OOGA-CHAKAS! |
And I'm seeing it again this weekend!
Here's what you need to know: nothing. Not one damn thing. This is a film that you don't need any prior knowledge of the characters, plot, or setting to enjoy. My wife and many of the people around us testified to that! Though it does help to know the plot to Footloose and who Uncle Jesse was on Full House.
Beyond that, you should just turn off the Internet and walk yourself to your local multiplex this weekend and get ready to have fun, because it is FAN-FLIPPIN'TASTIC!
What's more is there's so, SO MUCH to mine for games. No spoilers here, but there's an escape scene that could literally be scripted like it's a game session at its wild and wooly-est. It is the movie space opera fans have been pining for.
I was extremely fortunate to win passes at a GotG event held last Saturday at Source Comics and Games (my local FLGS). I felt like I won the lottery! If you get the chance to go early to a preview, just know that Marvel has held the final end-credits scene back until the official premiere this weekend.
I'll have more to say on Guardians in the coming weeks, but for now I'm only thinking about that second viewing. :-D
I'll leave you with a few trailers to get you excited:

VIDEO: Star Wars made cool by Guardians of the Galaxy styling!
This makes me want to watch the trilogy all over again. I feel like there's also a resurgence in recognizing just how cool Luke Skywalker is. Sure, you probably told all your friends that you like Han Solo more. But when we were all kids, Luke had the lightsaber and the saga was his story!

BIG news for space opera: Star Wars Rebels, Farscape, The Expanse, and more!
Looks like there's a ton of great news after Wonder Con (in Anaheim, CA) this weekend. Disney/Lucasfilm released some amazing concept art that hearkens back to the ol' Ralph McQuarrie aesthetic from the original movies. This followed a quick glimpse at a scene from the show:
Man, it's great to hear some classic John Williams Star Wars again! Here's a selection of the concept art:
UPDATE: The James S.A. Corey Twitter account has posted SyFy's official webpage for the series. Not much there yet, so better bookmark it and go back: http://www.syfy.com/theexpanse. The account also confirmed that the show is in production!
Just to make sure your head goes full supernova, here's the latest behind-the-scenes clip for Guardians of the Galaxy:

Farscape isn't so far away
Meanwhile in another corner of the galaxy (the Wonder Con convention hall), Farscape creator/producer Rockne O'Bannon confirmed an earlier report that a Farscape film will be happening. So now we've heard it from the man himself!SyFy wakes "Leviathan" for new series
In other news, the SyFy channel has picked up the rights to develop the space opera series of novels set in "the Expanse" by James S.A. Corey (the pen name for collaborating writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). They're calling their approach to the series"A Game of Thrones" in space. The source material is already pretty well developed and includes "Leviathan Wakes," "Caliban's War," and "Abaddon's Gate," with a fourth title due in June, "Cibola Burn". Time to get to the bookstore folks!UPDATE: The James S.A. Corey Twitter account has posted SyFy's official webpage for the series. "Ascension" series announced at SyFy
This is welcome news, as there seems to signs of a shift from inside SyFy to return to developing more space opera-focused stories for television. They'd previously announced back in March a new series called "Ascension" which also takes place in space. and they describe as:Part Battlestar and part Downton Abbey, it follows the 100-year-long space shuttle of colonists fleeing an Earth threatened by the early Cold War.
