>> mathematics by the yard
I found this article in a 1954 issue of LIFE while looking for something else. One of the anonymous designers quoted in the article said, "Geometric prints are a reaction against flowers and fruit." Bold stuff.

>> posteritati
I think old movie posters are so great in an office, den, powder room, entryway, media room, and hey, they make a killer gift! Here are just a few great ones I picked out from Posteritati, but their collection is quite large, you can lose yourself browsing. Japanese Yellow Submarine ($900, other Beatles posters starting at $60); Contempt ($75); Japanese Dr. No ($900); Andy Warhol Festival ($250); Bandolero ($150); Annie Hall ($350).

>> wall street
Despite the fact that the sequel to Wall Street should have been way better and it came out well over a month ago, I felt like doing something banker-y. Maybe it's the fact that you almost never see men in suits in L.A., I don't know. And hey, the Dow is well over 11,000, that's something to be happy about, right?
Wall Street poster ($30); Bull + Bear cufflinks ($75); water pomade ($18); 1984 Rolex Oyster Date (prices vary); Thomas Paul twenty dollar pouch, because I guy would TOTALLY use one of these ($24); Blackberry Bold.

>> tiny toddler chair
How do parents resist the cuteness of toddler furniture? I saw this mini mid-century chair at a vintage store on 4th street in Long Beach (forgot the store's name, but it's right next to Number Nine Noodles). I almost justified the $145 price tag by saying I'd give it to my favorite toddler but logically walked away unscathed. But it was hard. Very hard.

>> take ivy
It took me about .3 seconds to become fully obsessed with Take Ivy ($15), a photo book full of candid photographs shot on Ivy League campuses in the mid-60s by Japanese photographer Teruyoshi Hayashida. It was originally published in Japan in 1965, setting off an explosion of American-influenced “Ivy Style” fashion among students in Tokyo, which is still lingering today. Required reading.
What I saw in more than a few stores in Tokyo's Daikanyama neighborhood in November of 2008.

>> zographos side chair
My friend recently scored a set of four chrome-plated tubular chairs with buttery worn leather laced up in the back a tag sale for a price that would make anyone want to jump off a building for not buying the set themselves (yes, that good). The chairs were designed in 1966 by American furniture designer Nicos Zographos. So good.

I hope you enjoy the long weekend and the last official days of summer. I can't believe how fast it's flown by this year. Matt and I are headed to Wyoming for some fishing and wildernessing on Friday. Check out the above photo of Jackson, WY taken in 1948. Incredible!

>> mister bailey
Mr. Bailey was the emergency contact for me in 1st grade and once when I was "sick", he got me out of school and let me have chocolate ice cream and play Nintendo. Since that day my loyalty has never faltered. We even have a secret handshake, still implemented to this day. Great laugh, great guy, great style (and he has an even more stylish wife, of course!).
Winston's War: Churchill, 1940-1945 ($24); Hermes silk twill tie ($170); Vintage Persols circa 1980s ($199); Needlepoint Retriever key fob ($45); Belgian shoes ($350); Cartier Tank Francaise; Oliver Peoples tortoise glasses (prices vary); Dunhill cigars ($228 for box).

>> it was a dark and stormy night...
In protest to the light and sunny weather, we served Dark 'N' Stormys last night for a few peeps new in town. I know that technically Barritt's is the way to go on the ginger beer front, but we tried out the Aussie brand Bundaberg, which was pretty tasty and readily available down the street at The Oaks.
Gosling's Black Seal dark rum ($20); Bundaberg ginger beer ($2.25 per bottle at The Oaks); Shun premier paring knife ($100); Ice bucket ($145); Birch cutting board ($50); vintage kitchen matches ($2); ice tongs ($8); Striped vans ($52); Ujala lamp ($148); lobster swizzle sticks ($1 each); The Meters album, for track 11, "Stormy" ($14).

>> acapulco chair
I think I first laid eyes on an Acapulco chair ($350+) earlier this year when I was writing a story about a Los Feliz couple who had white ones in their back yard. The chair, which is based on Mayan hammock weaving technology, was designed in the 1950s and has been a huge hit in Mexico. They're great for outdoor space but could work indoors as well. Another good online resource is Greenpoint Works in Brooklyn.

>> mohawk general store
My friend Kingsley is in town from New York (posting might be light this week). Yesterday we went to Silver Lake for gelato and shoe shopping when we walked right into the grand opening of Mohawk General Store's new location at the Sunset junction (4011 West Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles). Great shoes, great lamps, great bags, great everything. Go now!
