Progressive Cow
Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The host, Connie, provided the photos.
The very photo of this cow reminded me of a Connie van Winnsen style painting. Check her site out.
I have been a real fan of her art for quite a few years. So, in tribute to her I attempted this cow more or less in her style. Looking at it now, I see that perhaps some of the colors may need a higher chroma.
Anyhow, this is a tribute from me, Connie.

Bovine Beauty-Calf
Close ups
Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Skappy generously supplied the reference photos.
I singled one calf from the herd. Always a joy to paint bovine beauty.
I first toned the canvas with a dark red/brown acrylic. After the drawing was on, I painted the background (the area around the calf) with black gesso. After the black was dry, I made it notches darker by painting it with thinned ultr. marine blue oil paint.
After all the background prep, I had fun painting the calf in thick strokes.

Cow-Soulful Eyes
Oil on 5x7 gessoed hardboard.
I have missed doing one of my favorite subjects to paint. I used to do quite a few of these a while back. Anyhow, here she is in all her her soulful eyed glory.
Once again, I toned the board with red acrylic and allowed it to peek through my brushstrokes.
Hope y'all like it!

Calf Half Light
Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
I went retro for this one. This is the style I used almost exclusivly in '04 & '05. A lot of fun and I like the result. A lot of mushy, colorful, paint....sometimes applied with a painting knife and either left as is or worked into with the brush. The idea is to have an exciting surface texture and exciting under- mixed paint. Hope ya like it!

Longhorn Steer
Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
The reference photo was supplied by Susan, the hostess for this week's WDE at Wet Canvas.
Somehow, I got started doing a cow a month on my blog. This long-horned dude will fill the bill for September.
I like the portrait effect against the dark background...it really forces the attention on the subject, and produces a huge dramatic effect.

August Cow Portrait
Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
Here's another in my series of cow portraits. It seems that I'm averaging a cow portrait about once a month. My two most recent are here and here.
Sold to a great collector in Irvine, Ca. Thanks!

June Cow Portrait

I had such a good time painting the cow in the May 21st post( scroll on down this page), I had to try to relive the experience! So here's another one done in the same manner.

Cow Portrait
Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
I really like how this one came out. First of all, I covered the panel with black gesso warmed with a little red acrylic. The colors come alive and "pop" from the very first strokes. Secondly, I didn't over blend the colors with brush strokes in one spot...I laid the color down and moved on. Third, in areas of accent or highlight, I placed a loaded brush stroke and let it alone.
I hope y'all like it!
This one just sold to great lady in Irvine, CA...Thanks!

Colorful Cow
Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
This painting was actually posted a few months ago. It was rather on the dark side, and I believe for that reason it didn't receive any bids on eBay. So, in the interest of science (Heh), I have repainted the bovine. I added more bright colors plus lighter values. Hope this time I get to stick a shipping label on her butt and ship her out!
So now, it's a portrait of a cow set against a gorgeous sunset skyline.. I really enjoyed doing this one! The oils were applied thickly in selected areas and turned out really well in the fur texture!Hope you enjoy!!

Cow Portrait
Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel. As usual I first toned the surface with acrylic...more or less like an abstract with dark warm colors plus some splatters of yellow ocher. The cow is in textured oil while much of the original acrylic bg remains visible.

Cow- Animal Art #2
Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
You may remember this cow painting....it was originally posted on June, 26th. It was one of those that I had doubts about. So, it was reworked and much improved this morning.
Hope ya enjoy it!!
