The Shadow-Angus Cow Portrait

 Close ups

 Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin supplied all the reference photos.

I wasn't too sure about painting such a dark character as the Angus but, thought it'll be a good challenge. The shadow of the ear across the shoulder really was what caught my interest.

This is oil on an acrylic toned canvas panel. First I covered the gessoed panel with a thinned alizarin crimson. Then I painted in the dark shadowy areas with black gesso. Below is what the start looked like. I like starting from a mid value and working my way up and down .

C&C welcome. Thanks for checking me out and commenting! :)

Spotlight-Cow

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

Wow...(patting myself on back)! Two posts in the same week!!!!! It has been awhile since I've done that. I started out in 2006 all gung ho and dashing out nearly one a day for quite some time. Guess I got lazy over time plus general wellness factors. But I still enjoy the painting, posting, and comments from my friends! :)

I wanted to investigate lighting with this one. By keeping around 80% of the painting dark or colorful midtones, the small area I've selected to receive light is really in the spotlight. I like the dramatic effect. Hope you do too. :)

C&C welcome.

Update
I gave this ol' gal a face job! Many niggly things I wasn't too happy about in the first take. I Worked on her eyes, ears, nose, and added more exciting color to the face shadows. I think the effort was worth it!

Candy Colored Cow

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 gessoed hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Scatty was the gracious hostess who supplied all the great reference photos.

Just couldn't pass up the white cow! I love pushing the color all over the place on a white subject and the lighting on this cow was perfect.

This is oil on a 7x5 hardboard. All by brush....no knife this time.

C&C welcome! Thanks for looking and commenting.

Seeing Red-Bull

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 gessoed hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The very Valri was the gracious hostess who supplied all the great reference photos

I decided to do the bull and make him a little more menacing than he appears in the photo. It's always fun to try and paint the temperament of a subject.

This is oil on a 7x5 hardboard. After sketching the bull with a Sharpie, I toned the panel with thinned Alizarin Crimson acrylic.
The high value colors were applied with both a painting knife and loaded brush.

C&C welcome. Thanks for commenting!

Bovine Beauty-Calf

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Skappy generously supplied the reference photos.

I singled one calf from the herd. Always a joy to paint bovine beauty.

I first toned the canvas with a dark red/brown acrylic. After the drawing was on, I painted the background (the area around the calf) with black gesso. After the black was dry, I made it notches darker by painting it with thinned ultr. marine blue oil paint.

After all the background prep, I had fun painting the calf in thick strokes.

Summer Sun into Autumn Sun

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This landscape was posted on Wed. It was done quickly and posted immediately thereafter. It was a summer scene and I felt it was devoid of life...just "blah".

I appreciate the input of my artist friends... Celeste Bergin and Pam Holnback. Please check out their fine blogs. They made several suggestions that I immediately recognized as true. I was merely temporarily "blinded" because of the freshness of the work.

For one thing, I am presently surrounded with fall colors and my muse just didn't want to tackle so much summer green. So I re-worked it into an Autumn landscape.

I'm happier with it now...but, of course (as always), there remain areas in question.

Here's a side by side for easy comparison.

Noon Sun

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.

Thought I'd run this by you folks. I didn't have a lot of time to paint today, so I whipped this up to check some facets of landscape painting that I have been mulling over. Less is more...a touch of red near a point of interest...just basically the power of suggestion.

I don't yet know how successful it is since it's so fresh in my mind.
Do you think it's overdone or underdone...or as the baby bear says: "Just right."?

Thanks for looking.

Cow Portrait

Close ups.

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

I've enjoyed doing cattle in the not too distant past. Here's another. This is the Murray Grey breed. I've pushed the color to give it the appearance of standing in a still moonlit night.
I started this composition by first applying black gesso to the support. I then applied a thin coat of pthalo blue acrylic which made it even darker.

Longhorn Steer

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
The reference photo was supplied by Susan, the hostess for this week's WDE at Wet Canvas.
Somehow, I got started doing a cow a month on my blog. This long-horned dude will fill the bill for September.
I like the portrait effect against the dark background...it really forces the attention on the subject, and produces a huge dramatic effect.

Cattle

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
My aim on this one was to keep the strokes fresh and lively...lay it down and leave it alone. It's oil on a 5x7 archival canvas panel. The panel was primed with black gesso with a touch of thalo blue added.

Cow Portrait

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
I really like how this one came out. First of all, I covered the panel with black gesso warmed with a little red acrylic. The colors come alive and "pop" from the very first strokes. Secondly, I didn't over blend the colors with brush strokes in one spot...I laid the color down and moved on. Third, in areas of accent or highlight, I placed a loaded brush stroke and let it alone.
I hope y'all like it!
This one just sold to great lady in Irvine, CA...Thanks!

Jersey Cow

Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
Finally...Here's one I'm happy with! Everything went down on the canvas surprisingly easily. Love when that happens. I invented the background to compliment the subject. Great color relationships...contrast...value range. Forgive my if I appear to be bragging on this one...you may or may not agree. But if you don't toot your horn once in a while, everyone will think you have a dead battery...
