Shade Hog-Lambs

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Gail was the gracious host this week who provided a bunch of great photos.

I liked the grouping of the lambs in this one. Very interesting shadows on the lambs plus those cast on the wall.

Gail's challenge was to accentuate color in the manner of Vickie McMurry.

I looked up Vickie McMurry's art and loved it. So for the challenge, I gave my color a bit of a boost.

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking and commenting!

For Mother's Day
Close ups

Acrylic on 8x10 mat board.
NFS

This painting was done in 2004 shortly after the passing of my wife, Kay. Roses were her favorite flower. Roses were also the favorite flower of my mother.

So I post this in memory of the two great greatest people who have ever resided in my heart.

The video is for all the Moms who have gone on.

I have re posted this video from Celeste Bergin's fine blog.

Guardian-Rooster

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lisilk was the super host this week who provided a bunch of great photos!

I really like painting roosters. Colorful guys with a ton of attitude.

Plenty of knife work on this one. But the brush was used in the tight spots. I attempted to keep this one loose and painterly. Hope I succeeded.

How Now-Brown Cow

 Close Ups

 Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Scatty was the gracious host this week and provided a bunch of great photos! Thank you, Scatty!

How now brown cow? I didn't know exactly how I wanted to paint this beautiful bovine. So I tried to make the lighting more interesting. It's always a challenge for me whenever I try to change the lighting in a photo. I think the mouth was open as it chewed the hay ( couldn't exactly tell from the photo). So for simplicity, I gave it some manners and closed the mouth.

Looking For Spring-Goats

Demo
 Close ups

 The Drawing
First I drew the kids on the canvas panel. I went over some important lines using a Sharpie. Then I toned it using thinned acrylic alizarin crimson.

  1st Hr.
Working from the mid value toned support, it was easier to judge my lights and darks. I tried to keep the paint thick in the lighter colors for interest. I had a lot of fun with this one!
Hope you all like it!

It's snowing again here tonight, so I'm sure looking for Spring. It seems that these kids are intently looking for something too....Spring, maybe??

Center Of Attention-Ducks

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess was Scatty, and she provided great reference photos.

Something about ducks always seem happy and many times humorous.
I liked how these guys were gathered around eyeballing the main duck. They were either admiring him or were about to boot him from the flock for some ducky infraction.

Pondering Porker-Pig

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's The Paint your Pig Challenge posted by Carol Marine .
This weeks’ challenge was very simple. Paint a pig. Any pig

I found a pig painting I posted on my blog clear back in Oct, 2006. Check it out here.
I was struck by this old '06 painting! I thought, "This is better than what I'm painting today!"
Mixed emotions. On the up side, I was doing work then that I like even more today, with the passage of time. On the down side, I somehow feel like I've been regressing backwards instead of progressing.
At this moment, I feel like going back over my old paintings and injecting some of that approach into my present work....That's what I attempted to do with this new porker.

Morning Glory-Rooster

Close ups

Oil on a 6x6 canvas panel.
Working within the square format was something different for me.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess, Kay, provided great photos to work from.

For the thick strokes, I loosely mixed paint (not over mixed) on the palette. Then I would pick it up on my palette knife. Then pick paint up from the knife with a scoop of the brush. And lastly, apply it in one stroke. This seemed to give some nice unexpected blends and broken color.

Thankful (Happy Thanksgiving)

Oil on a 7X5 hardboard. To quote my chicken: " I'm thankful I ain't a turkey!" Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

This is my contribution to the WDE at Wet Canvas. The reference photo was graciously provided by Gail.

I reverted back to my favorite thing...pre toning the board with red acrylic. I like how it peeks through and activates the painting. Hope you all like it!

Cow Portrait

Close ups.

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

I've enjoyed doing cattle in the not too distant past. Here's another. This is the Murray Grey breed. I've pushed the color to give it the appearance of standing in a still moonlit night.
I started this composition by first applying black gesso to the support. I then applied a thin coat of pthalo blue acrylic which made it even darker.
