Make a scene ...

... no, I haven't been stamping my feet and having a tantrum ... but making a scene with a brayer and inks - how I wish I was half as good at it as Barbara Gray is (I so admire her work) ... but I tried. I used my splodge mat for the first time (had it for a long while and this is the first chance to use it). I used a variety of ink pads - broken china, stormy sky and bundled sage distress inks and lake mist, meadow, pitch black and salmon Adirondack dye inks. All of the trees and bushes are Clarity stamps, inked with pitch black, but using faded stamping as well.

I was prompted to get the inks and brayer out by the Daring cardmakers challenge for this week (closing very soon): Setting the scene. This challenge is being sponsored by Docrafts who are giving one of their 4 exciting new sets of Build-A-Scene Dies each worth £19.95.

For the first scene I masked off a circle for the moon, but then brayered over to create a cloudy, mist where the moon is just about evident.

On this one, the moon was masked off, but then brayered gently to create a slightly layered look (which is actually more salmon looking irl):

Thankfully, the snow has all gone ...

... so I don't mind seeing it on cards. The background paper is an offcut of DCWV paper, with an embossed panel created with a snowflake embossing border folder on a snippet of white card brushed with stormy sky distress ink, with some sticky ribbon either side. The image is one that I stamped and glittered a long, long time ago - I got the stamp in a 'pass it on' challenge at the time and stamped so many of them and this is a stray one that didn't get used.

Birthday candles

This is a card that I made a couple of weeks ago for my brother's birthday. I was keen to get it in the post, so I forgot to take photos, but he has kindly taken some and emailed so I can now show the card. It was a special birthday, which explains the number of candles - and there was an appropriate message inside. I used a Docrafts candles tamp, masking off some of them to stamp the middle ones, colouring them with copics. The sentiment background paper was some I've had for a long time. The card is an 8 x 8 because I needed lots of room for all the candles!

Three cards out of one

Last February I made a multi-fold easel Christmas card, but it didn't get used and I wasn't that keen on  it, so didn't see any point in keeping it. But there was no way that I was going to discard it so I decided to take it to pieces and use most of those pieces along with other bits from my offcuts box to make three new cards.

This is the original card and you can read about it here:

And here are the three cards I made:

Simply Holly

Carol challenged the Christmas Card Club to make cards without designer paper. I decided to use the sketch 8 for Less is more 104 - they asked that the card stays in this orientation ie that the band remains in the horizontal plane, in the lower part of the card and that it takes up no more than 1/3rd of the height of the cardbase:

I used a 'holly doodles' stamp designed by Sheila Oliver for Tanda Stamps - I haven't used any of these for quite some time, but always enjoy them when I do.

I inked the stamp with versamark and heat embossed with detail black (sadly, knocking the pot over so that some went on the carpet - it had to happen with black, didn't it!) I coloured with copics apple green G14 and strong red R46, also drawing the red lines with R46. This is for CAS-ual Friday 87: make your mark - use markers.

The sentiment stamp was from a set that came with a magazine.

I tried all sorts of ways to get a better photo ... but it didn't happen. The white is much more vivid irl and the embossing shows up brightly.

This is also for Sunday's with Santa on facebook week 2 (yes, I'm behind already): traditional colours.

Vintage Christmas

The gold and cream picture was cut from a card received, deliberately with a jagged edge. The swirly mirror card is an offcut of Hunkydory card torn at the edge and the sentiment is from Anna Griffin, all mounted on a black card blank.

Another recycled Christmas card

I'm still sorting and clearing - determined not to put bits away. This DL card was made using a large Christmas card that had been received, splitting the picture in two to mount on the front and back flap of the three-fold card. The inside is decorated with some shiny paper that I've had for ages - still got lots of it and have hardly ever used it, but thought that the colour went well with the stardream card blank and the pictures.

Second card for CHNC challenge 109: nativity

For my CHNC challenge 109 that starts this morning I'm asking for Christmas cards that in some way depict the nativity. It might show an image of Mary and Joseph, the manger scene, the wise men, shepherds etc or perhaps a scripture verse of phrase from a Christmas carol that refers to the nativity in some way.

There are three sponsored prizes to be won for this challenge - please go over to CHNC challenge 109 for details and, hopefully, join in.

For my second card I've used two images kindly supplied by one of the sponsors, Paper Pretties, called 'nativity' and 'wisemen' which I combined together digitally before printing out and colouring promarkers and flexmarkers. As there is quite a lot of detail in the images I printed to a size that would be right for an A5 card.

The main background paper is the reverse side of Graphic 45 Carol of the Bells paper, the turquoise patterned paper is DCWV. The ribbons (the red stuck on top of the gold) were bought this week from Lakeland - did an online order for household products and they slipped into the basket - I couldn't resist buying a few packs because they were reduced. The flowers and sentiment are from stash - the sentiment is red on gold (hard to see here) - it says 'with love at Christmas'.

For my first card I've used an image kindly supplied by one of the sponsors, Pink Gem Designs, called 'nativity Philip'. I cheated a bit and printed out the coloured version and mounted on a snippet of silver mirror card. I've been using a lot of offcuts recently, so I fancied cutting into new papers for this, but could I find something that matched the image? No way! So, in the end I resorted to using an offcut which was originally part of a Kanban kit bought quite a long while ago. To be honest, I nearly got rid of this ages ago because I couldn't really think how I would use it.

Because this already had some silver foiling on it, it would have been silly to try and add anything else, although I was sorely tempted. So this has ended up as a really CAS DL card:

Butterflies ... with all my love

Today I've had a change from sorting and recycling. I decided to get inky instead, so I got out my Luminarte radiant rain daubers and used poppy red with a touch of passionfruit with plenty of water spritzing. I wasn't very pleased with what I achieved (too heavy handed with the dauber in places I think), but I made a discovery.

This is what the piece looked like:

And I turned it over to discover it looked like this and I rather liked it:

So I daubed a bit more on the right side until some of the white spaces were less obvious on the wrong side and then dried off well with my heat gun. So this wasn't exactly a new technique, but a new discovery so this is for Paper pretties 242Scrappy frogs: try something new and Crafty boots: new - using something new (a new idea).

I've recently been thinking that I'd like to try getting back to taking part in 365 cards - somehow I let it lapse for a while and the while became longer and longer - lol! - anyway, it so happens that today's challenge, day 24 is 'lovely liquids', so I'm linking for that.

Meanwhile, before getting inky with the radiant rain I had printed out some A day for a daisy 'freehand butterfly 1 with music notes' digi images in three different sizes and coloured with various red copics - R05, R27, R35, R46 and RV29. This is for A day for daisies 62: add some red, also for Copic marker Europe 13: anything goes with Copic markers. I added a few pink and red gems to the butterflies.

I've used the sketch for Flutter by Wednesday 224:

I've used the back of the radiant rain card for the top part and the front for the piece across the middle so that there's just a hint of a purply pink. The middle pinky panel was achieved by sponging a panpastel on white card. - linking for PanPastel 3: nature. I found the sentiment strip from long ago and a piece of ribbon for across the top, but I think this was a mistake, but there's no way I'm taking the card to bits now. The pearlised oval frame is one from a kit of them from years ago mounted on to an offcut of a magazine freebie paper.

I'm afraid that I'm now going to have to be disciplined and put the inks etc away and get back to the sorting and recycling etc (well, for some of the time at least - lol!).

From our house to yours ...

... this is the sentiment on this card, for which I've used two Christmas offcuts, a recycled mirror card door from a card received, a piece of gold glittered ribbon and a Craftwork cards sentiment:

Over the past few days (and more to come) I've been showing cards that include recycled elements - I'm still sorting out my stuff and trying not to put things away that I can use now ... although I admit it's getting a bit boring really. I've got out my H2Os after seeing Sheena Douglass on Create & Craft and also my Radiant rain colour concentrates in the hope that I can do something soon other than use up  my bits and pieces, but meanwhile:

As usual with mirror card I had to take the photo at an angle to avoid glare:

Just to prove that it's mirror card!:

And so you can see what the sentiment says:

Patchwork pal

Four or five years ago I bought a Patchwork Pals kit from QVC, used a bit of it, put it away, out if came again a couple of years ago ... and the rest had been in a box left alone until yesterday. While I was having my sort out (which must continue later today) I opened up the box and thought that I ought to use some of these supplies, so here is my card with the little cheeky chappy just about to through a snowball:

Anyone for cocoa?

Part of my strategy in sorting my craft stuff at the moment is to actually use some of the bits and pieces that tend to be put back in a box and then neglected. Having used a couple of chipboard shapes from Poundland on the previous card, I decided it would be stupid to put this one away, so I've used it with a couple of design papers from my Christmas offcuts box, the left hand one was free with a magazine. The right hand one was punched with a mini 8 snowflake punch.

Neglected embossing folders

It's a while since I've used any of my embossing folders (and I do actually have a few ... or more than a few - lol!) So I got out a snowflake folder (think it's docrafts, not sure) and embossed an offcut of linen finish lilac card which I then brushed with stormy sky distress ink (although it doesn't show up as much here as irl). The chipboard shapes were bought from Poundland long ago and were on my workspace to be used instead of putting back into a box. The glittery ribbon is actually purple, although it doesn't look so here. I used a stardream sparkly card blank.

Getting diverted ...

... I'm going through some of my craft stuff to have a sort out (seems to be something I do quite often) and came across more and more bits that I saved 'just in case' - some has gone in the recycling bin, but some have ended up on cards that I've made as I go along ... so the sorting is a slow process that is interrupted with the cardmaking.

This is one that I made with some background paper by Kaisercraft that was free with a magazine. Everything else was taken from a card that mum received a couple of years ago.

While I had the Kaisercraft free papers out I used the snippet left from the previous card along with another paper from the pad for the background of this next card, using two squares that had come with a Kanban kit long ago - a few toppers like this were lurking near the old cards and I thought it was about time I used some of them. The greetings are from Anna Griffin:

As well as the two squares I used on the previous card, there was a longer version featuring the three wise men which I mounted on to some background paper that had long been neglected, but which matched some of the colour of the image, and mounted on a cream DL card. I tried to get a picture without reflection from the flash, but still caught some on the edge - oh well!:

I had very little input into the first and third card, so I am only entering the second one into these challenges:

Third card for CHNC challenge 108

This is my third card for CHNC challenge 108: recycle or use something free.

The third sponsor of CHNC challenge 108 is Cedar Chest Designs - please click on the link to find out more about them and also follow the link to my challenge and, hopefully, join in and be in with a chance of winning a prize.

Cedar Chest Designs kindly supplied me with the 'O little town' digital image that I've used in this card. The background striped paper is an offcut from long ago from a Gorjuss Christmas kit. The silver mirror with the charcoal glittered berries and the piece of  sparkly black card across the top were from one of my Christmas crackers (the same one that the leaves came from that were used on my first card for CHNC challenge 108). I coloured the image with alcohol pens and mounted on to a snippet of Hunkydory white and silver card.

This card was based on the sketch for Critter 147:

The foiled card with the glittered berries is silver mirror (although it looks gold here) and the sentiment strip across the bottom is 'Just for you at Christmas' - very difficult to get a photo because of the reflection of mirror card.

Second card for CHNC challenge 108

This is my second card for CHNC challenge 108: recycle or use something free.

There are three sponsors for CHNC challenge 108 - please click on the link to get more info and, hopefully, join in and be in with a chance of winning a prize.

One of the sponsors this week is Crafts 4 eternity who kindly supplied me with the SnowRag image of the snowman - they also supplied me with some digital vintage tag images, so I used an empty one and added the text to it. Instead of colouring in the buttons on the snowman's coat I decided to use some little real ones. The background papers cut into squares were from free ones that came with a magazine well before Christmas and the image is mounted on to an offcut of blue mirror card. The snowman was coloured with promarkers and flexmarkers.

The card was based on Maria's sketch for Sunday sketch & stamp 139:

CHNC challenge 108: recycle or use something free

Today's CHNC challenge 108 is to use something recycled or something that was free. This is my first card for that.

The lovely bauble on my card was part of a card with an M & S gift card - far too good to waste. The leaves at the top of the bauble were retrieved from a Christmas cracker - I have to confess that I bought the crackers with the thought of being able to recycle bits of them (more to come!) - and the good thing is that they were half price.

The silver and blue mirror card panel was from my offcuts box, mounted on to an A5 dark navy blue cardblank.
