Food Storage...and Photos!

If any of you frequent my blog, you know we have an unfinished addition that we built onto our home a few years ago. We finish things slowly, as we have the time and funds to. One thing that will be in this lovely new addition is a walk-in pantry! Until then, I have had to become a little more creative with how I store food in our home.

Before I begin, I just want to explain why I store food as I do. In the event of an emergency...snowed in (or other natural disasters), loss of income, or any other number of possible things...it's always nice to be prepared.

She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. ~Prov. 31:25

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. ~Prov. 31:27

As well as things I have in the freezer and canned goods from our garden in the basement, what I do is have a few large bins. In these I keep as many bags of flour and sugar that will fit...



Then I have a smaller bin, in the kitchen where I keep a couple bags of flour and sugar. Then begins the *rotation*...

When the flour or sugar from one of my canisters, in the kitchen, runs out...I go to the smaller bin and use one of those bags to refill the canister. Then I get a bag from the larger bins and rotate it into the smaller bin. Newly bought flour (great to get when on sale) and sugar are kept in the big bins...so the oldest items get rotated in and used first. I also like to buy my flour in bulk, sometimes, and usually I keep those bags in the freezer.

Some other items I like to keep stock of are crackers, salt, pasta noodles...

and things like soups, beans, peanut butter and vegetable oil...

With the amount of debt our country is in and the entitlements so many people have gotten used to...I am cautious, although strongly confident in God's provisions, and prepared for whatever may come economically. My thought is this: if everything stays fine, economically, we are no worse off with my food rotation/storage. Right? It's sort of like having insurance *just-in-case*.
I just thought, in leiu of my previous post, that this would be something some of you may be interested in as well. :)

And, before I go, I wanted to share a few photos from around our home, that I have taken the past few days...

Although it's hard to see...this is Xavier, lovingly shoveling some of the driveway (and yard)! I didn't ask him to, he just does things like that. He came in a bit later, nose and cheeks cold and red, and asked if I had seen *how much* he shoveled for me! I thanked him and warmly told him what a great job he did and how much I appreciate it!

Our home, in the snow. For any new visitors to my blog...our home is a work in progress. We have most of it sided...but since Chris does the work on his own, there's still more to be done! Plus, the front room will one day be made into an open/real front porch! :)

I hope you have enjoyed your past week...through the difficult times and good. There is so much we can learn about ourselves, our faith and our character when dealing with hard times. It's a great chance to evaluate our behavior and attitude...and to grow in our faith. :) We each, in different ways, go through ups and downs in this fallen world. How we choose to handle them is the very thing that can shine our light, brightly, for Jesus...or do the opposite. Light shines through a loving heart!

Always glad you stopped by! I *did* seem to get a critical comment about my previous post which talked about my simple life. It was left anonymously...and that is OK. I don't mind differing views. I just wanted to mention that numerous times in my post, I said how this was how *we* choose to live and what is best for *our* family. It isn't for everyone. :)

  2. Having lived in Alaska, one learns to plan ahead due to weather, distance from the store etc. We still stock our shelves and do the rotation for use as you do. We garden, can and freeze. We think alike - I too know God is my means, but there is nothing wrong with doing what I'm able to care for myself.

  4. I try to stock some food as well, Katy. I understand all your reasons, and agree with you.

    Brenda @ Coffee, Tea, Books and Me is wise in saying that we should only stock those things that our own families will eat!

  6. Hi lovely lady! I have missed you so! Lily just looked at the loaves of bread on your side bar and she said they look like butt cheeks! You do optimize that pantry of yours. the nice thing about a small pantry is that there is less to clean. I love the snow photos. it is 85 high here in the desert country. hugs.

  8. Keep up the good work, Katy! (BTW, have you noticed that those who write nasty comments are too cowardly to sign their name?)

    I buy flour in bulk, too. I went to Sam's Club bakery and the ladies gave me some of their white buckets (with lids) that they get frosting and shortening in. You can get a 25 pound bag of flour in a bucket. But don't tell anyone I told you. :) haha I love your blog, Katy.

  9. My grandmother grew up during the depression and was a young bride during the ration years of WWII. She always had a stockpile and my mother learned to stockpile from her and I learned from my mother.

    Although I keep hearing that the economy is getting better I am not really seeing it. Almost everytime I hit the store I see that prices are rising and I know people that still can't find a job. I think it is always best to be prepared.

    I enjoy seeing how others do things in their home. Great post!

  13. Katy,how do do the flour and sugar thing,do you freeze them or in the fridge?I would like to stock up on these as much as I use them but never knew this part of it.

    Be true to yourself! Sometimes people are jealous because they live a shallow life. Our lives our so different and yet so much the same. There are other blogs to read if they don't like yours. You are more diligent then I am. However, looking at your yummy bread makes me want to try my hand at it. I used to make a lot of stuff from scratch but kind of got lazy I guess, but I am getting back to putting more effort into my meals. :)
