My partner and I are spending a long weekend in Melbourne next weekend and we can't wait! I would love to hear from any of you about ideas for great bookshops we could visit while we are there? Or any other great Melbourne highlights we shouldn't miss. We both love Melbourne but it has been a while since we have visited now so we want to make sure we don't miss anything exciting!

One day I will visit Australia...! I wish I could give you good suggestions, but I'll be following this post to do some armchair traveling! :)
oooh, Im jealous!! Try Readings at St Kilda for a good book time. I've always enjoyed purchasing there.. Also make some time to visit the statue of Weary Dunlop (Australian War Hero) which is on St Kilda road (I think)on the way to the book shop. And dont forget Little Collins St for fun clothes and shoes! Whatever you do - Have fun and eat well! PS. check out Madame Brussels cocktail bar - it's a gorgeous little place on a 3rd floor rooftop - great place to see the sun setting...
If StKilda is too far away, try Readings in Lygon Street in Carlton. I love their bargain tables. If you were in Williamstown I'd suggest Seagulls in Nelson Parade. Its a little quirky bookshop and you could take your purchases over the road to the park and sit on the grass beside the sea, or buy fish and chips from the shop on the corner and sit and read in their courtyard.
Try the Hill of Content at the top of Bourke Street, almost on the left hand corner of Exhibition St on your way up to Parliament House. I like secondhand bookshops too, and there's a good one at the South Melbourne market but the best day to go there is a Saturday when you can talk to Martin.
That's a start.....
Now eating, that's a whole different ball game......
Just read one of your earlier posts about High Tea. Try the Tea Room at the National Gallery on StKilda Road.
I see you went to Lindt too. We (my section at work) try a different chocolate shop every term and started with Lindt at Chadstone. Then we moved to Theobroma at Know and have a couple more in mind to finish the year. What's not to love about that.
Rats, I went to a great bookstore in Melbourne back in 2007 but I don't remember what it was called. While there though I got a great book by a local author called Trafficking in Old Books by Anthony Marshall.
Hi Coffee - I hope you make it over here one day!
Hi T - Readings are definitely one of my faves - but we usually go to the Carlton branch. Thanks for the cocktail tip - sounds gorgeous!
Hi Chat Noir - Thanks for your wonderful suggestions! I will definitely try and get to High Tea too!
Hi Thomas - thanks for the tip!
Hi Karen,
I'm a Melbourne girl currently living on the other side of the world. You MUST go to Readings in Carlton as already suggested, it is a Melbourne institution and if you're lucky there'll be an author reading while you're there and you may even run into some authors shopping there (I have). While you are in Carlton you should also go to Book Affair, which is a huge second hand book store in Elgin St, Carlton. It's massive and you'll get lots of bargains.
Reader's Feast on the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets in the CBD is also heaven (it's down the escalator next to Dick Smith) and the staff are very knowledgeable.
Have a great time in old Melbourne town
Next weekend will be the beginning of the Melbourne Writer's Festival! Are you coming down to Melbourne for that?
You should definitely check out the Book Market at Federation Square on Saturday. I also agree a stop by Readings and Reader's Feast is also essential! You should also have a wander along Brunswick St. They have a great selection of quirky stores and excellent cafes. Have fun!
Hi Bee - we did go to Readings in Carlton and Readers Feast - and picked up some bargains!
Hi Mae - Unfortunately we won't be in Melbourne next weekend for the Writers Festival - we are really disappointed too!

First of all I would like to say awesome blog! I had a quick question that I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your head before writing. I have had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out there. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Appreciate it!
