My View: Christmas in New York

Ahhh Christmas in New York! There is nothing else like it. The city is a magical place as it is, but this time of year it really becomes special.
Here are a few of my snaps over the last few weeks and wonderful holiday days taken from my instagram feed. To keep it "insta", you can find me @BobbinBombshell.

The start of my work week begins at Balthazar with a good friend, a croissant, and café au lait. Balthazar is a must visit during the holidays.

This is our fist Christmas in our new place. Stockings were hung above the radiator.

Cranberries! And cranberry nut bread!

Did you participate in Chronically Vintage's "vintage secret santa? This lovely vintage lippy holder was a gift from mine!

Oil lamps and brownstones. Brooklyn at it's finest.

I hope you are enjoying your holidays, what ever and where ever they may be!

My View: Summer Summer!

I am back from a brief blogging break after a hectic but fun-filled Summer! The past few months have been filled with trips for work, family visits, and an unexpected move to a new apartment. I have worked on some sewing and knitting projects along the way and I will share them soon. In the meantime, here are some shots from my instagram feed from the past few months.

Visited some family in Boston and enjoyed some sweet treats at a street festival!

We moved to Bay Ridge! I am enjoying the proximity to New York Harbor and have taken my vintage Raleigh, or the Rusty Lady, out for several rides.

I went to Newport, RI for work and tried to capture the beauty of the super moon on the beach.

The roof top of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, here in NYC, offers wonderful views and wine!  I went to see the Charles James exhibit. I hope you saw it!

I spent July 4th weekend in Montauk for work selling swimwear in our 1970's Land Yacht airstream. So much fun!

I hope you all are enjoying your summer! To keep the "insta" in instagram follow me @bobbinbombshell.

My View: Spring in New York City

The weather is finally getting nicer here in NYC! Here are some Instagram snaps of Spring!

Finally, it was nice enough to go out with out a jacket. I snapped this selfie while waiting for the train. I'm wearing my vintage 1970's H-BARC Ranchwear shirt. I love that floral print. Sunglasses from Trés Noir.
Underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Never gets old!

This is Jane's Carousel in DUMBO. I like this shot.

Went for a walk on the High Line on Easter. New York City is in bloom!

My View: Winter in the City

I always enjoy the quietness of Winter, even in a city that doesn't slow down. Here are some snaps I have shared on Instagram lately during some recent snowy days and nights.

My View: Summer In The City

July was a hot one! Summer in the city is always a mixture of awful and special at the same time. Hard to describe, you just have to experience it to know what I mean. Here are some July Instagram highlights. If you prefer to keep Instagram, ya know instant, follow me @BobbinBombshell.

Mid-Week Inspiration: Grace Coddington Rides the Subway

Grace Coddington, Vogue magazine's Creative Director, was on the same train as me yesterday on my way home from work.

This is not my photo. Here is Grace photographed by Craig McDean for the January 2013 issue of Interview magazine on the subway.  Grace has been working alongside Anna Wintour at Vogue since 1988.

She was also a model. The photo above is from her early modeling days. Grace is now 72 years old. She is a major player in the fashion industry here in New York and worldwide. She still works. She is not a fashionista. Fashionable? Yes. Fashionista? No. And she rides the subway.

That is inspiring!

Some of my favorite Retro Looks in the Modern World posts are styled by Grace. Have a look here and here

My View: A Pretty Winter

Here's a review of some of my Instagram photos this month. I've been working hard this Winter, but I've taken time to notice the quiet beauty of the season!
To keep Instagram, you know, instant, follow me @bobbinbombshell!

If you've been following me on Instagram, you've seen these beauties grow and come to life. I received a bulb garden for a Christmas gift and I've loved watching the Paper Whites and Amaryllis bloom.

We've had a cold yet very clear and sunny January. Here's a snap I captured of the Flatiron building in Manhattan with the winter sun shining on it.

I'm loving tweeds this year! Some yummy new yarn for winter projects!

And it was my Birthday a couple of weeks ago! Here is the prettiest gift wrap on a gift I received!

My View: Lipstick, Corselettes, and Curls!

It's so hard to follow everyone on every social media channel these days. I know I can't keep up! Here's a review of some of my recent Instagram pics. To keep Instagram, you know, instant, follow me @bobbinbombshell!

My new Guerlain lipstick! The case is a pop up mirror. So James Bond and the shade, Genna, is a perfect red! Guerlain made the first bullet tube of lipstick. They have not stopped innovating!

Oooh La La! My new Gossard Corselette!  You may remember me gushing over vintage Gossard corsets here

The Empire State in red behind one of my favorite buildings. Taken on my walk to pilates.

And then here's my evolution of naturally straight hair to vintage curls:

1. The wet-set is in place. I wear these all day and to bed!

2. The next morning- pre brush out.

3. Ready to go to work!

My View: Green-Wood Cemetery

Yesterday my husband and I took a lovely Autumn stroll through the nearby Green-Wood Cemetery here in Brooklyn. Founded in 1838, Green-Wood quickly became the place to be buried and to visit in Victorian era New York City. As the New York Times wrote in 1866, "It is the ambitions of the New Yorker to live upon Fifth Avenue, to take his airings in the (Central) Park, and to sleep with his fathers in Green-Wood."
It really is a beautiful place to visit with ornate monuments, peaceful hills, and views of Manhattan. Enjoy my shots below.

My View: Post Hurricane Sandy

You've seen the news, you've seen the images of flooding on a repeating loop. You're aware of what Hurricane Sandy brought to the East Coast. Instead of bombarding you with more images of the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy here in NYC, I want to share with you some images of a few of my favorite places.

The cherry blossoms at Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.

View of the Statue of Liberty from Governor's Island.

On top of the Empire State in one of my favorite vintage 1940's dress.

Summers in Coney Island! Here I am in my 1960's swim suit set

I have lived in New York City for 18 years now and it can both be an amazing place to live and a difficult place to live. I've seen a lot and I know that this is a truly resilient place. We will get back on our feet and carry on but it will take help. In the wake of the storm, I am donating 20% of my November and December sales in my Etsy store; The Sparkling Cocktail to the American Red Cross. Each buyer will be notified of the donation given in their name. Every penny counts, I wish I could give more. If you want to donate or give in your own way, please check out the many ways you can help here.

My View: Yarn Bomb!

I'm documenting Yarn Bombs as I discover them. A while back I found a tricycle that was completely covered in knit. Silly me, I wasn't carrying my camera with me that day. Now I always have my camera in my purse.
This one going around a street post was found on 15th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in Manhattan.

My View: On Top of the Empire State

My Grandparents spent their honeymoon in the 1930's in NYC. I have always adored this elegant photo of them on top of the Empire State Building. The day after my husband and I got married we withstood the long lines and went up to the top of the Empire State to "recreate" this photo.
Once there, we found it impossible to get a full body shot as my Grandparents did. The deck is too narrow and way too crowded. It looks like my Grandparents had the deck to themselves. Also, note the gate that wasn't there in the 30's. Fascinating.
A view of the Chrysler Building. My favorite.

This view is very close to wear my Grandparents were standing. The view hasn't changed that much. I love it!
