Video tutorial: Newborn Rucksack Carry

This is a great back carry for a newborn and great for hot weather. It is basically a kangaroo carry done on the back.

In the video i'm wrapping in the bedroom so that i can be near a bed. I'm new at wrapping so i'm not taking any chances (If you're learning back carries, make sure you have a spotter or wrap near the edge of a bed) Adam is watching a video. If you listen carefully you can hear him trying to mimic what i'm saying..hehe..i'm really trying not to laugh in this video.

Mia is not all calm this time so you can get some idea how to handle a crying/wriggling baby while wrapping. Of course if you're learning a new carry you should make sure your baby is fed and happy before you try to wrap for best results. But, in reality our babies do cry and that's when they need to be cuddled and wrapped the most. I find that when wrapping a crying/wriggling baby, the main thing to do is be calm and confident, and keep your focus on the wrapping. You can pause and calm your baby down by bouncing, rocking, walking. If all else fails what i do is just keep wrapping until i'm done and then walk/dance around until she calms down again...

I took my time doing this carry because i'm still learning but you can actually do this carry pretty quick especially if you do the simple rucksack where you just cross the tails under her bum instead of spreading it out like i did in the video. But she's tiny so i feel more secure with a reinforced rucksack. if you have a shorter wrap, you can also tie under her bum. Happy wrapping!

Wraps info

Some people have been asking about where to get wraps in Malaysia. Here are a few websites i found that sell them:

Tiny tapir and Lil Caliph - they have moby wrap which is a stretchy wrap

Peekaroobaby - Jess has medley wrap ( woven and stretchy) and her own diy wrap.

not much of a choice there...but if you have paypal, you can always buy online international. Checkout the babywearer website. A lot of info there on babywearing and if you want to purchase a used or sometimes new carriers, you can always check out the forum for fsot (for sale or trade). With a wrap i actually prefer gently used wraps because they are already soft and broken in. and you could get them cheaper (but not necessarily). But i warn you fsot is VERY addictive....

also, check out the Malaysian babywearer website. They also have fsot on the forum. Plus they're a wonderful bunch of babywearing mamas! come by and join the interesting conversations there..

Video tutorial: Newborn Kangaroo Carry

This carry is good for malaysia weather actually...because only one layer of fabric is covering baby so it's not so hot (unless you do the reinforced kangaroo like i did in the video). If you have a shorter wrap, you can just tie under the bum. In the video i twisted the tails but you can also do it without twisting (though twisting helps to get it more snug). Happy wrapping!

p/s: sorry about the mess and havoc in the background ;)

I love babywearing!

I want to share some beautiful babywearing photos that my husband took yesterday...

IMG_1664 - Edited

This carry is called Kangaroo Carry. It can be tied with a shorter wrap. InsyaAllah I will do a video of this carry next..

IMG_1652 - Edited

Mia is clearly a model for babywearing babies. She absolutely reaffirms my belief that a worn baby is a happy baby. EVERYTIME I wear her she starts calming down and falling asleep. Doesn't matter which carrier I use. Yesterday I tried my handmade pouch with her and again she snoozed right after I put her in a comfortable position..

IMG_1675 - Edited

I find myself wrapping her for most of the day. My wrap is definitely being put to good use. Right now, she is happily snuggled against me while I'm typing this.

IMG_1670 - Edited

We get a lot of stares here if we go out wearing a wrap..I think in the UK babywearing is not a common thing, similar to how it is in Malaysia. I'm trying to learn how to nurse in a wrap now, so that it would be easy to nurse in public if we need to..it's easy to breastfeed discreetly in a wrap, all that fabric will cover you up..maybe no one will even suspect you're nursing your baby..

aaahh saving the best pic for last. Cuddling with both my little angels. Alhamdulillah, I am so blessed...

Video tutorial: Newborn Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC)

Well, not so much a tutorial, i'm really still very much an amateur wrapper...But as I learn more carries I'd like to put up a video to document my newborn wrapping adventures..anyone wants to join me?

This carry (FWCC) is probably the easiest and the most comfortable carry for a newborn. This is my number one go-to carry especially to get Mia to sleep. We made this video yesterday before going to the hospital for my post-natal check up. It was an early morning appointment, Adam was still asleep, so I wrapped Mia up and off we went just the two of us (that's why she's wearing her bunny snowsuit in the video!). My husband stayed with Adam. This is the first outing for just Mia and I. I'm glad I wrapped her because it made the whole outing so easy. We took the bus to the hospital. Mia slept through the whole thing....

Newborn back carry

IMG_1592
I have been trying to do back carries with Mia, but this is my only successful attempt so far (after many unsuccessful attempts). This carry is called a Rucksack Carry. With newborn it's harder because you need to have the head supported and their body is so small it's hard to reach back there. Mia doesn't like it when i'm wrapping the fabric around..she will cry or wiggle..but once i'm done wrapping she will fall asleep, everytime! i swear this wrap has magic sleepy dusts!

IMG_1595
View from the front. I did what is called a Tibetan Tie on the front. I think new breastfeeding mommies with enhanced chest area will definitely appreciate this because the tails sort of cover your front..(pls excuse the weird tudung ikat and pyjamas, had to just grab tudung on and take pics because who knows when i'll be able to do another back carry successfully!)

here's the money shot - lovely sleeping baby, safe and sound on Mommy's back!

Gradation dyed silk indio

close enough to kiss
close enough to kiss

This wrap is originally a Didymos Silk Indio in natural colour. It is a mix of 70% cotton and 30% silk. The wrap has been gradation dyed by the mama who sold it to me. She named it hard candy because of the colours. It is about 4.2m long. It's a woven wrap, which means it's non-stretchy, unlike my purple Wrapsody.

A silk indio is said to be a must-have with a newborn because of its softness. When i received it the texture is not as soft as i expected it to be..i read that with a dyed silk indio, you will need to break it in post-dye before it becomes soft and marshmallow-y like it should. So right now I'm doing everything to break it in...sitting on it, braiding it, wearing it...right now it's drying in the guest bedroom..hopefully it'll soften up soon...but even right now i find it really great to wrap with...

first wrap job

i think this pic shows the colours of the wrap the best. It is pink on one rail, and bluish purple on the other end. In the middle there are shades of purple, green, yellow, peach and pink. It's absolutely stunning...i'm really falling in love with this wrap!

IMG_1558

the carry that i'm doing is called a Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC) i think thats what its called..i'm stuck with this carry at the moment, it's most comfortable and easiest for a beginner..But i intend to learn other carries and i'll put up more photos if i succeed...

the mama who sold it to me included a silk indio scarf that was dyed in the same colours as my wrap. I was gonna use it as a normal winter scarf but....look at this:

i think it looks better on Adam, don't you??? hehehe...he's wearing Spongebob there..

more photos of Mia and Wrapsody

My husband took some lovely photographs of Mia yesterday..here she's wearing one of her dresses...

actually mmg hari2 amik photos Mia..she's growing so fast! just today, the midwife came to visit and weigh her...she's gained 300g already! in 10 days! i wish she could stay in this tiny newborn state for longer...

she has long nails..org panggil kuku gelas...hopefully as she grows kuku dia still panjang, ikut daddy dia...cos mine are short, org panggil kuku cawan (see in pic). This kuku cawan i inherit from my mom...and i think this type kuku very dominant..hehe..sbb my mom has it and all my 5 siblings has it too..hehe..my mom got hers from my nenek..Adam pulak masa baru lahir nampak kuku dia saiz medium la..tapi now dah jadi kuku cawan jugak like me...Mia girl kalau kuku gelas comel la bila dia nak bertunang esok kan? jauhnye pikir...kahkah..

i wish i could capture all these precious moments with her...cos i know the newborn stage is soo brief...bila tgk Mia, rase mcm confirm i want more babies :)

I asked my husband to take nicer pics of me wearing Mia in the Wrapsody...pics haritu tak lawa, tak nampak the true colours of the wrap..these photos you can see it clearly..the pattern is really beautiful..

trying out the standard 'Aphrodite shot'. Mia mmg sedap sgt tido kalau masuk dlm wrap ni...kalau dah lama sgt i kluarkan dia, so that dia bgn bfeed..kalau tak dia tidoo jer...

Mia's first dress and babywearing

Mia's been living in mostly sleepsuits and onesies..today I thought it's time to try one of her dresses on her...this one is the smallest dress i made..it actually fit her well, but i think that also means she will probably grow out of it in a blink..hehe..but you never know, it took Adam forever to grow out of his newborn clothes...so far Mia has gained 100g (midwife came to weigh her yesterday)

enough pics of me, Mom! it's naptime...

she looks like an angel in a dress..i'm totally gonna have to make more dresses! hehe..

My Wrapsody stretchy wrap came in the mail a couple days ago! Oh the pattern is just to die for...

and it wraps like a dream! It's less stretchy than a Moby ( I ordered a Moby first, but didn't like the colour when it arrived so I exchanged it for this one, i'm so glad i did!) but that'll make it last longer...later when I can wear it outdoors i'll take more action pics..I am soo happy to start babywearing again! I can't start wearing Adam yet, but wearing a newborn is just...ahh..heavenly!

p/s: sorry the pictures aren't so pretty, i took them myself. today my husband took Adam to school to play..

Day Trip

We went to London King Cross, and to this platform...

and took the train...

and arrived at Hogwarts!

hehe..no, not nearly as exciting as that..

we went to Cambridge! It's so beautiful there! rase mcm walking around inside a magical painting...

Cambridge is popular for Punting - like a sampan, moved by using a long pole pushing the bottom of the river..

Adam on our punt tour. sempat bermesra dgn strangers. If you notice in the background our tour guide pegang the long pole and moving the punt with it..

by the riverbank. Adam ralit tgk ducks..

Sporting Daddy pun try out the Storch OMT. he also thinks it's great..

Adam sedap tido...
mmg cantiklah Cambridge..sape yg lucky enough to be able to apply to Cambridge, pegilah...best giler all the colleges we went to..semua lawa2 giler..old historical buildings, wonderful traditions..
rase nak dtg lagi sini..dekat je..sejam naik train..
Adam, nak study kat Cambridge tak nanti?

It must be my lucky day

We went to the carboot as usual today. The weather is really gloomy and raining a little, plus it's Easter Hols so the bootsale is only half full, not as many stalls as usual. we were dissapointed, but since we were already there, might as well go in.

As it turns out, this is the day i get to find real hidden gems...

First i found this copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows for 2.50 pounds. What a bargain! the book is in brand-new conditions..awesome..

Then just before we went home (didn't buy anything else) i saw these gorgous colours that looked really familiar......oh..

Me : *couldn't believe my eyes* this is a carrier, right?
Lady seller : i don't know, you tell me.
Me: How much is it? *holding my breath*
Lady seller: *shrugged, couldn't care less* 50p? (not 50 pounds, 50 pence!!!!!)
Me: *stopped breathing* *take out coins and pay her*

i practically ran out of there, feeling as though i literally stole an expensive wrap! (which i did!)

It is a Storchenwiege Ulli wrap, converted into a Mei Tai. Storch wraps are really expensive (around 119 USD each), and the convert job costs a lot too, since it takes a lot of gut and plenty of sewing talent to cut into these expensive wraps. One of these babies could easily have costed 200 USD or more..oh God..i suppose a fellow babywearer would know what i mean..

the sewing is absolutely excellent. The fabric is heavenly soft and all broken in. and the colour?definitely MY cOLOUR! i've been eyeing Storch Ulli on FSOT for a while (and also Maruyama in almost similar colours) but they are too expensive for me since i'm not earning any money nowadays..i just can't believe i found it SO CHEAP!!!Next to NOTHING!...not to mention converted into my favourite carrier - mei tai! Like, it was thrown there for ME to find!!! OMG, is it my birthday??

OMG..i'm still reeling in the after-effects. i hope i don't wake up to find it's just a dream.
the wrap-mei tai is now in the wash. can't wait to wear it soon..
fuh...alhamdulillah...

Edited : I found one Ulli OMT (same as mine) on FSOT (For Sale of Trade forum where they sell used carriers) selling for 280USD!!!!

International Babywearing Week - The Walk

I'm slapping myself on the head now because i forgot to write about the walk before it happened...

anyway, the turn-out was great nonetheless. we walked around the Curve and Ikea. So wonderful to babywear in a big group in a puclic place, for once it felt like we're the 'normal' ones, instead of the odd ones out.

i love this pic. most ppl weren't ready/posing yet but everyone looked cool and happy wearing their babies, eventhough we were in the hot sun and squinting. notice the variety of carriers being worn.

babywearing mommies - we were really enjoying ourselves. babies looked like they're needing their nap..hehe..

babywearing daddies - awesome! don't they look great?? i wish more daddies would join in soon..hubby offered to wear Adam too, but this time he was gonna take a lot of photographs, so i'd rather wear Adam myself..

with Suryati, one of my customers..she's wearing Micah in Pink Blossom Buckle Tai..

walking happily as if we own the place..hehe..i'm sure we must've at least intrigued some ppl enough to look into babywearing in the future..

I'm hoping we'll have more gathering fun lagi...hehehe...

more beautiful photos of the walk at my husband's flikr.

Malaysian Babywearers gathering - September

The turnout for the Malaysian babywearers gathering this time was very good..even better than last time, I think..yay!

The title was “Ring Sling”. I’ve not used one was looking forward to learn about it but unfortunately was busy chasing Adam while Jess was giving the briefing on ring slings. I don’t know why Adam somehow gets really hyper whenever we arrive at a babywearing gathering! The last time pun mcm tu jugak…habis semua tmpt dia nak pegi/panjat/main/kacau…ok, he’s always like that only masa gathering ni lagi terukla sbb org lain tgh diam dgr talk..hehe…

Hubby arrived in style – in a handmade pouch (oh ya I forgot to blog about this pouch eh?)

Jess explaining about ring slings

However I did get to try out some of the carriers that I’ve been dying to get my hands on…ok let’s feast your eyes on these very hard-to-get carriers…

This one is a SSC called Beco. Look up their website. I’ve always been fascinated by the design. Looks just like a back pack. And after testing it…my comment is…well…it feels just like a big backpack the kind you go hiking in, but not in a good way. Erk I hope no Beco ppl will come haunt my blog with spammers. It was way too bulky for me..too thick, too big, too many buckles, and uncomfortable! The shoulder straps go over the shoulder and straight down under the arms but in an uncomfortable way that my underarm feels weird? I don’t know how to explain but it just feels uncomfortable…I imagine it will be very hot outside too..however, I do like the fact that it has an insert so that if you put it down with the baby inside, the baby tak jatuh..and you can just slide from front to back position without dropping baby (although this was hard to try)..

This is a Freehand Mei Tai. Oh I love this one! The material is very soft twill! Very soft and thin! Perfect for our weather, I think. The Freehand deserves the name Kozy better than the Kozy. Ops. it has no padding though...if i were to make a mei tai like this one (oh i wish i have that twill!) i'll pad it a little bit...but overall, i love this mei tai...wish i could buy one...heheh...

Adam almost fell asleep in the Freehand - told you it's cozy

Oh ya Lana came! She wanted to find the perfect carrier for her but unfortunately baby Haiqal tgh sleepy, poor baby! Pls jgn serik dtg lagi next time ok? She did try my Mei Tai Buckle…

hope she liked it..

The timing mmg masa nap baby lah kot..Adam pun ngantuk sgt…the last carrier that I tried after the Freehand was a wrap…teus Adam lelap..

This is a Vatanai Kipawa wrap. It’s supposed to be great for hot weather..i think it is..the fabric is thin, but seems to be strong and grippy..tapi susahnye nak ikat wrap without a mirror! I managed to tie it but a bit low..tapi oklah Adam terus tido..zzzzz….

Lps tu kitorg terus balik..we had to leave early cos dah terlambat pun nak balik Perak..Everybody waiting for us there..eh tak..Opah and Atuk waiting for Adam actually…cucu kesayangan..hehe..So tak sempat nak bergambar dgn the other ladies and try out other carriers…takpe, next month pulak =)

Check out more photos of the gathering here

Action Pics!!

First thing – I want to thank everyone who commented on my previous post about the SSC. I’m overwhelmed, thank you so much..you have no idea how much the support means to me. I will definitely think seriously about selling this time, especially since my hubby pun betul2 serius motivate i…thank you sayang..

OK….let’s see the action pics!!!

Back Carry
coolness!!

they are bonding=)

i can use it too..

i think backcarry is cool! you can get things done ( like housework) , since baby is not in the way..and is great for toddlers because the weight is better distributed on your back..hubby received a lot of attention (positive or negative i'm not sure!) when he was wearing him on his back, which was good because we're hoping to spread the joy of babywearing! if you spot us anywhere wearing our baby and feel intrigued, pls do not hesitate to ask us about it!

Front Carry
Adam getting cozy and sleepy..

jumping test!

i'm happy!

i myself prefer the front carry, if i'm going for a walk/shop..the reason is i like having Adam close to my chest, i can kiss him whenever i want, i can play with his hair when he's sleepy, i can make funny faces and watch him smile/giggle...

overall conclusion (so far)

i love our "Mei Tai with Buckles" (we need a better name for it!) ! i think hubby is So much better at wearing this carrier. i struggle a little bit to figure out how to use the buckles, put baby in etc..but hubby mmg terer lah..in fact he's already come up with many tips and tricks how to put it on, how to take out, how to handle the buckles, how to pre-tie prior to driving and then just pop baby in etc...fuh!! it's really a Daddy-friendly carrier, i guess!!

hope you enjoy the pics =)

One more important thing – PLS JOIN THE MALAYSIAN BABYWEARERS GATHERING TOMORROW! YES IT’S TOMORROW!

If you love babywearing, if you want to learn about babywearing, if you’re just curious about what’s all this fuss I’ve been making about babywearing, if you have a baby, if you’re pregnant and expecting a baby…or even if you don’t have a baby, just come and you may use my baby for practice! Hehehe…

Daddies! You guys come too ok!! See how cool my DH looks wearing his son?? Read what he has to say about babywearing.
