Book Wars! Night Study By: Maria V. Snyder

Book Wars a weekly feature hosted between two book review blogs – A Life Bound By BooksMuch Loved Books!

It’s a fact that book lovers know all about the covers of the books they covet. Often when a title is released here in the UK, it’s sometimes vastly different across the pond in the US. So, Michelle from Much Loved Books and I have come together to create Book Wars to talk about the difference in covers when it comes to the US vs. UK versions.

We hope from time to time authors will chime in with their thoughts as well. We welcome everyone to comment and share their thoughts too! The more the merrier!

Before we get to this weeks Book Wars, we have a winner to announce. The Book Wars winner for Half-Blood (Covenant #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout is...!!!!!! Thank you to everyone who voted for both books, and for picking a winner.

Also, there's a poll at the bottom of the post that we'd love to hear your input for the two covers! Tell us which one YOU love the most.

About the author:

Meteorologist turned novelist, Maria's been writing fantasy and science fiction since she was bored at work and needed something creative to do. A dozen novels and numerous  short stories later, Maria's learned a thing or three about writing. She’s been on the New York Times bestseller list, won a half-dozen awards, and has earned her MA degree in Writing from Seton Hill University where she's been happily sharing her knowledge with the current crop of MFA students. She also enjoys creating new worlds where horses and swords rule, 'cause let's face it, they're cool, although she's been known to trap her poor characters in a giant metal cube and let them figure out how to get out. Let the Wars Begin: Its now time to make our decision, let's see what we think about the covers and pick our favorite cover.
Lisa These two covers are each beautiful in their own ways. However, the US cover just is captivating to me. It's just so clear and stunning in a way that is a bit lacking in the UK cover.

Don't get me wrong, I love the UK cover as well. It's scenery is stunning too, yet I mean just look at the US cover! Don't you just want to know what she's thinking? What's going on to make her look so forlorn? I know I do!

And so that's what pushes the US cover out over the edge in getting my vote this week. Do you have a favorite? Tell us by voting below.
Michelle This is a tough choice for me this week as I am torn between the covers for different reasons. I love the cover for the UK cover for its scenery, from the land, to the tower, to the stormy sky. I love the different hues of purple and green and how it all works to make this a creepy feeling land. I just wish the blue circle sticker/advert wasn't there. The US cover though wins for me as it not only matches Shadow Study, but this whole series has had a redesign and now this complete series matches, which always wins for booklovers. I love that we get to see Yelena, and also have a very nice scenic view in the background. For me this week I am going to go with my heart and not my orderly brain, and my vote goes to the UK cover. I much prefer the scenery of this one over the US cover. Now that I've left my vote, don't forget to vote for your favourite below.

Synopsis: From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

Synopsis: When sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner's family decides to move from their small mountain cabin to the vast prairie, she hopes it is her chance for a fresh start. She can leave behind the memory of the past winter; of her sickly Ma giving birth to a baby sister who cries endlessly; of the terrifying visions she saw as her sanity began to slip, the victim of cabin fever; and most of all, the memories of the boy she has been secretly meeting with as a distraction from her pain. The boy whose baby she now carries.

When the Verners arrive at their new home, a large cabin abandoned by its previous owners, they discover the inside covered in blood. And as the days pass, it is obvious to Amanda that something isn't right on the prairie. She's heard stories of lands being tainted by evil, of men losing their minds and killing their families, and there is something strange about the doctor and his son who live in the woods on the edge of the prairie. But with the guilt and shame of her sins weighing on her, Amanda can't be sure if the true evil lies in the land, or deep within her soul.

Let the Wars Begin: Its now time to make our decision, let's see what we think about the covers and pick our favorite cover.

Lisa WOW, look at these two covers. Both are extremely eye catching and if I saw each of these on a book shelf I'd pick them up to take a closer look.

There's just something a bit MORE when it comes to the UK cover that tips the scales for me. I like that the character we see is a in shadows so we just get a peek and know it's a female. I like the dark of the forrest and the fog that's swirling across the image.

I can just imagine what the UK cover looks like up close... so this week there's no doubt about my vote for the UK cover. I love everything about it.
Michelle I am in two minds about this weeks cover. Part of me wants to vote for the US cover and that is my OCD part because I know that the previous books in the Study series will eventually end up with similar covers. The other part of me wants to vote for the UK cover.

Since we do base the vote on what cover we like I am ignoring my OCD part and going with my more rational part, and my vote this week goes to UK. I love how mysterious it is with the foggy effect on the front and how we don't really get to see who the person is, which fits in perfectly with the story itself. In general I also think this is more likely to attract my attention in a shop, want to know more about this cover and whats inside the pages. I have read and reviewed Shadow Study and I loved it, my 5 star review can be found here.
