Our Review:

Amanda (age 12) received Indescribable as a gift from her grandma a couple of years ago. It became a well-loved book that she has read about 4 times.

Amanda keeps the book by her bed. She likes that every new chapter is a new topic about natural science and God. She has learned a lot and thinks it’s very interesting.

I like the way the book is laid out with text and illustrations. It’s easy to follow with cool facts for kids. Louie Giglio helps kids to see God in science and makes learning fun.

Dolphins at Britannia Bay and a Linky

We had so many great days at Britannia Bay over the Christmas season and seeing dolphins was a regular occurance. Trying to capture them on camera was another story! It's especially exciting to get the dolphins when they're surfing the waves. Thankfully, I managed on one of the days to get several good shots. All of these photos were taken on that day. I bet the kayakers and the paddle boarder enjoyed seeing the dolphins up close! That must have been a real treat!

My Latest Book Review:

Follow Me on Instagram!

My latest Sock Sunday is the second book in a wonderful steampunk duology that I'm reading to Amanda (age 11). It's called Innovator: Adventure by Association The Everternia Saga by Zen DiPietro. The series is strong on friendships and adventure with lots of whimsy. We love Sally, a non-player character (NPC) in Everternia who has become self-aware. She's ready to take on the world she lives in and make some changes for the good of all NPCs and Adventurers from Real World. Zen DiPietro has created a cozy Steampunk RPG world. Amanda even asked when reading Book 1 if this was a real game, because she wants to play it! This is a fun story for all ages. #SockSunday #whatimreading #steampunk #fantasy #fiction #adventure #mystery #friendship #funny #rpg #litrpg #youngadult #middlegrade #bookreview @zendipietro

Serafina and the Black Cloak

Serafina and the Black Cloak

About the Book:

Title: Serafina and the Black Cloak | Author: Robert Beatty | Publisher: Disney-Hyperion | Pages: 320 | Genre: Scary Mystery | Recommended Ages: 10 and Up

Book Description:

"Never go into the forest, for there are many dangers there, and they will ensnare your soul."

Serafina has never had a reason to disobey her pa and venture beyond the grounds of Biltmore Estate. There's plenty to explore in Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbilt's vast and opulent home, but she must take care to never be seen. None of the rich folk upstairs know that Serafina exists; she and her pa, the estate's maintenance man, have lived in the basement for as long as Serafina can remember. She has learned to prowl through the darkened corridors at night, to sneak and hide, using the mansion's hidden doors and secret passageways.

But when children at the estate start disappearing, only Serafina knows the clues to follow. A terrifying man in a black cloak stalks Biltmore's corridors at night. Following her own harrowing escape, Serafina risks everything by joining forces with Braeden Vanderbilt, the young nephew of Biltmore's owners. Braeden and Serafina must uncover the Man in the Black Cloak's true identity before all of the children vanish one by one.

Serafina's hunt leads her into the very forest that she has been taught to fear, where she discovers a forgotten legacy of magic. In order to save the children of Biltmore, Serafina must not only face her darkest enemy, but delve into the strange mystery of her own identity.

Amanda's Review (Age 11):

There’s a girl hiding in the basement of the Biltmore Estate with her father. She has good hunting skills and pretty eyes. Others may not find her because she could get harmed.

There’s a mysterious guy who is always seen wearing a black cloak. Every day a child goes missing even if their rooms are locked. One day, Serafina sees a man in a black cloak dragging a child away.

Only one other person knows about Serafina. His name is Braeden and he tries to help her find out who the man in the black cloak is.

This is an extremely scary mystery. It’s also fun and interesting. It has a proper ending and does not leave you hanging. This book is best suited for ages 12 and up.

Guest Farm in the Klein Karoo and a Linky

The Hex River Valley
On Saturday we drove out to a guest farm past the Hex River Valley between De Doorns and Montagu. We were far enough off the beaten track that we had no mobile/internet reception. We were helping to host an Alpha course Holy Spirit weekend for the guys from the Christian drug and alcohol rehab where we minister. We all had a great time and it was nice to see the guys looking so happy and relaxed!

The Alpha course is also a lot of fun and is designed to fit everyone, even those who have never been to church. The guys have been going through the video series once a week with us at the rehab. They have been connecting well with the content and the true stories have been having a big impact. Many people don't know much about the Holy Spirit, if anything, so the sessions on this weekend camp were well received. We also had time to pray for each guy individually and give them words from the Lord.

Mamá Graciela’s Secret

Mamá Graciela’s Secret
Publication date: October 10, 2017
Written by Mayra Calvani
Illustrated by Sheila Fein
MacLaren-Cochrane Publishing
www.maclaren-cochranepublishing.com
36 pages, 3-7 year olds
Reading guide at: www.MayrasSecretBookcase.com

Description:
Mamá Graciela’s TENDER, CRUNCHY, SPICY bacalaítos fritos are the best in town...
Local customers (including stray cats!) come from all over the island to enjoy her secret recipe. But when the Inspector discovers that Mamá secretly caters to so many cats and he threatens to close her tiny restaurant, Mamá must come up with a plan to save it—and all of the animals she loves.

Peek Inside:

My Review:

Mamá Graciela’s Secret is a cute picture book about a grandmotherly woman who makes the best bacalaítos fritos (cod fritters) in town. She loves cooking, but she loves her cats even more. She takes in stray cats and doesn't have the heart to turn any away. The health inspector tells her that she has to get rid of the cats or close her little restaurant.

The story's main theme is an entrepreneurial one, which is unusual for a children's picture book, but it's done well and is easy to understand. Amanda and I both enjoyed the story. It has the right amount of humor and tension for young listeners. The solution that Mamá Graciela comes up with is out of the box and gives the story a happy ending.

About the author:
Mayra Calvani writes fiction and nonfiction for children and adults and has authored over a dozen books, some of which have won awards. Her children's picture book, Frederico the Mouse Violinist was a finalist in the 2011 International Book Awards; her anthology Latina Authors and Their Muses was a First Place winner at the 2016 International Latino Book Awards; her nonfiction book, The Slippery Art of Book Reviewing, was a Foreword Best Book of the Year winner. Her stories, reviews, interviews and articles have appeared on numerous publications like The Writer, Writer's Journal, Multicultural Review, Bloomsbury Review, and others.

She lives in Belgium with her husband of 30+ years, two wonderful kids, and her three beloved pets. When she's not writing, editing, reading or reviewing, she enjoys walking with her dog, traveling, and spending time with her family. www.MayrasSecretBookcase.com

Earning her BA in Design from Buffalo State College of New York, her concentration was on drawing, painting, printmaking, and photography. Sheila's education as an artist has taken her everywhere from Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia to Bath University in England. Today, Sheila Fein runs two figurative workshops, Imaginings Sketch in LA and People Sketchers in Thousand Oaks.
